Common Mistakes to Avoid When Selling on Amazon

The most costly Amazon seller mistakes often start before a product goes live: buying inventory before checking eligibility, creating a mismatched listing, overlooking compliance duties, or choosing a fulfillment method without calculating its costs. Amazon’s guidance points to a practical safeguard: check current product rules first, build an accurate offer, model the economics, and keep monitoring listing and account status. Amazon does not publish a statistical ranking of the most common seller mistakes, so this guide covers recurring risks identified in its seller guidance rather than ranking them by frequency.

1. Buying inventory before checking whether you can sell it

Do not assume that a product is available to every seller just because it appears in Amazon’s store. Some categories require approval, some may require a particular selling plan or additional approval, and some products cannot be sold by third-party sellers. Amazon’s listing workflow also notes that the ability to create an offer can depend on a seller’s relationship to the brand or product.

Before placing a purchase order, search Seller Central for the product and category’s current requirements. If you plan to use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), check FBA product restrictions as well. Requirements can vary by product and may change, so confirm the live rules for the specific offer rather than relying on an old checklist or another seller’s experience. See Amazon’s product listing guidance, FBA overview, and restricted products guidance.

2. Skipping product safety and regulatory checks

A product that can be listed is not automatically compliant with every safety, labeling, tax, or other legal requirement that applies to its sale. Amazon’s listing form may include safety and compliance fields, depending on the product. Its seller guidance also tells sellers to review product safety, applicable laws and regulations, restrictions, and tax and international requirements.

Identify the rules that apply to the product and the markets where you intend to sell before sourcing or shipping inventory. Amazon’s general guidance is not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice; when the applicable requirements are unclear, consult a qualified professional or the relevant authority. Amazon’s product research and selling guidance covers these checks at a high level.

3. Matching the offer to the wrong catalog product

Amazon catalog errors can arise from typos, missing or conflicting product information, permissions, and other issues. Product-matching, brand-name, and generic-product errors are among the problems Amazon describes. A wrong match can leave shoppers looking at a detail page that does not accurately represent what you sell.

Before creating an offer, search the catalog to see whether the exact product already has a detail page. Confirm the product’s GTIN and compare the catalog record with the item in hand, including brand spelling and identifying attributes. If you encounter an error, use Seller Central’s listing tools or contact Seller Support where appropriate. Do not change or copy another seller’s generic listing unless you have the authority to do so. Amazon explains common listing errors and possible fixes.

4. Publishing an incomplete or inaccurate detail page

A detail page and offer need to give customers a truthful, usable picture of what is being sold. Amazon’s listing workflow includes product identity, description, bullet points, images, product attributes, offer information, and safety or compliance details where applicable. Requirements vary by product; missing or conflicting information can also lead to listing errors.

Review the listing field by field before submitting. Check that:

  • The identifier, brand name, and product attributes match the actual item.
  • Any variation relationship accurately reflects the products being grouped.
  • Images show the product being offered and do not create a misleading impression.
  • Price, condition, inventory quantity, and fulfillment choice are correct.
  • Required safety and compliance fields are complete for that product.

Amazon’s listing guidance describes the information involved in creating a product page and offer.

5. Choosing a product without calculating its full costs

A product’s purchase price and expected selling price do not tell you whether it will be profitable. Amazon identifies referral fees, fulfillment expenses, and inventory costs among the expenses sellers should consider. Dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping assumptions can affect cost estimates, so an unrealistic input can make a weak opportunity look better than it is.

Use Amazon’s Revenue Calculator with realistic product and shipping details to estimate costs and compare Amazon fulfillment with seller fulfillment. Treat the result as an estimate based on your inputs, not a guarantee of realized profit. Check current fee information before committing: fees and policies can change, and this article does not state fixed fee amounts.

6. Treating FBA and seller fulfillment as interchangeable

Fulfillment changes both the costs in your estimate and the work your business must handle. Amazon says FBA handles packing, shipping, customer service, and returns. With seller fulfillment, those responsibilities remain with the seller. A lower estimated per-unit cost may not be the better fit if you cannot reliably meet delivery and service expectations yourself.

Customer service and returns Amazon handles customer service and returns. The seller handles customer service and returns.

Operational fit Consider whether the estimated costs suit the product and your business. Consider whether you can ship reliably and manage customer service and returns.

Amazon’s FBA overview describes its fulfillment service, while the Revenue Calculator supports a cost comparison. The calculator can help compare assumptions; the operational choice depends on your capacity and circumstances.

7. Setting risky prices or overlooking shipping charges

Amazon’s fair-pricing guidance identifies several practices that can create problems: misleading prices, a price significantly above recent prices for the same item, certain multipacks priced higher per unit than a single unit, and excessive shipping fees. Amazon says it may remove the Featured Offer or the offer, suspend shipping, or, in serious cases, terminate selling privileges.

Review the current Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy when setting or changing prices. Make sure the total cost to the customer, including shipping, is reasonable and that the price accurately represents the offer. Monitor Account Health for policy notices.

8. Leaving listings and account status unchecked

Publishing a listing is not the end of the work. Amazon directs sellers to review inventory listing status and provides filters to help identify listing issues. Its pricing guidance also connects account performance with policy compliance, customer experience, and shipping issues.

Build a recurring check into your operating routine: review listing status, investigate suppressed or inactive offers, respond to policy notices, and address shipping or customer-experience problems. Use Account Health to see issues Amazon has flagged and follow the specific instructions shown there. Monitoring helps you identify problems; it does not guarantee that Amazon will not take enforcement action.

A pre-launch check for each product

  1. Confirm eligibility: Check the live category, product, brand, and FBA requirements in Seller Central before buying inventory.
  2. Confirm compliance: Identify relevant safety, regulatory, tax, and destination-market obligations for the product.
  3. Confirm the catalog match: Verify the GTIN, existing detail page, brand, and product attributes.
  4. Complete the offer accurately: Review the description, images, variations, condition, price, quantity, fulfillment choice, and applicable compliance fields.
  5. Model the costs: Compare fulfillment options with realistic dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping inputs in Amazon’s Revenue Calculator.
  6. Plan ongoing checks: Review listing status and Account Health after launch and address notices or customer-facing issues.

For additional training on listing, pricing, fulfillment, and related seller topics, Amazon offers Seller University, a free learning resource. Policies, category rules, and fees can change, so use current Seller Central guidance for decisions that depend on them.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
