The available reporting does not establish a current approval date or a start date for European service.
What EASA confirmed about the C-919
Reuters reported on January 15, 2026, that the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had carried out C-919 test flights as part of “validation activities” in the aircraft’s certification process. The South China Morning Post reported that the flights took place in Shanghai. The confirmation concerns the C-919 specifically; it does not document tests of multiple COMAC models. Reuters
What the flights mean—and what they do not
Test flights are part of evaluating whether an aircraft meets requirements. They are not a type certificate, a final approval, or permission to begin passenger service. EASA describes type certification as a four-step process:
- Technical familiarisation and definition of the certification basis.
- Establishment of the certification programme.
- Demonstration of compliance with the applicable requirements.
- Technical closure and issue of approval.
Flight tests can contribute to the compliance-demonstration stage, which EASA says is the longest part of the process. The agency issues a certificate only after it is technically satisfied with the applicant’s demonstration. EASA’s guidance says a newly developed aircraft type must receive a type certificate from the responsible aviation authority before entering operation, and that certification confirms compliance with EU safety and environmental-protection requirements. Has EASA certified the COMAC C-919?
The cited reports establish validation testing, not certification. They do not show that EASA has issued a type certificate for the C-919. As a result, they do not establish that the aircraft is authorized to enter European passenger service.
Is the C-919 headed for European service, and when?
A July 20, 2026, South China Morning Post report, citing two people familiar with the matter, said European pilots were beginning to wrap up a months-long C-919 flight-testing process. The report also cautioned that finishing flight tests did not mean certification was imminent. That is reported progress based on unnamed sources, not an official EASA schedule or finding. The sources cited here do not establish a confirmed date for EASA approval or European passenger operations. A 2025 U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission report said EASA had begun evaluating the C-919 in 2021 and cited a regulator outlook that it would not be certifiable before 2028 at the earliest. EASA’s involvement indicates that the C-919 is being assessed against European certification requirements; it does not by itself establish the aircraft’s eventual certification outcome or commercial prospects in Europe. COMAC describes the C-919 as its first trunk-line jet passenger aircraft developed under internationally used airworthiness standards. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent certification judgment. COMAC C919 product information
