That is an estimate—not a verified total of money paid out—and it is not a projection for the 2026 season. The largest component is a new category in the comparison: payments made through college athletic departments.
What makes up the $1.9 billion projection?
Opendorse’s August 2025 report divides projected 2025 college football earnings among commercial deals, collectives, and collegiate payments. The figures are estimates, not a count of confirmed payments to every player.
| Payment category | 2025 projection | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial | $290 million | Payments tied to commercial name, image, and likeness (NIL) activity. |
| Collective | $213.4 million | Payments associated with collectives. |
| Collegiate | $1.4 billion | Payments in the report’s collegiate category. |
The collegiate category is the largest projected share. The report’s totals and categories describe estimated earnings; they do not show how much a particular athlete received or how evenly money was distributed.
Why is the projection nearly double the 2024 estimate?
Opendorse estimated total college football earnings of $1.0 billion for 2024 and projected $1.9 billion for 2025. The comparison is not simply evidence that commercial NIL deals nearly doubled: the 2025 breakdown includes a $1.4 billion collegiate-payment category, while the 2024 table lists no collegiate-payment figure.

| Season | Commercial | Collective | Collegiate | Total and status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | $150.5 million | $853.1 million | Not listed in Opendorse’s table | $1.0 billion estimated |
| 2025 | $290 million | $213.4 million | $1.4 billion | $1.9 billion projected |
Because the category mix changes, comparing only the two headline totals obscures what the estimate says: much of the projected increase comes from the collegiate-payment line, not a like-for-like rise in commercial NIL.
How did Opendorse arrive at the estimate?
Opendorse says it extrapolated primary data from anonymized transactions facilitated or disclosed through its platform between July 1, 2021, and August 10, 2025. Front Office Sports reported that Opendorse had direct insight into half of Power 4 and Group of 6 schools. These details provide context for the estimate, but do not make it an audited census of all college football compensation.

Accordingly, $1.9 billion should be described as Opendorse’s projection—not as a verified cash-disbursement total, a final audited tally, or the amount players collectively received. It also cannot be used to infer an individual player’s likely compensation.

No. The $1.9 billion figure is a projection for the 2025 season. Opendorse’s 2025 report also projected $2.4 billion for 2026 and $2.6 billion for 2027. Those are forecasts published in 2025, not confirmed outcomes; the available figures do not establish a final 2025 total or a current final projection for 2026.
