The report followed an Adelaide customer’s claim that she found what looked like animal remains in a can. It described a shelf withdrawal, not a formal food recall.
What was reported
PerthNow said Adelaide resident Lauren Whitburn bought Coles home-brand red kidney beans at the Mt Barker Coles store on Saturday, 2 March 2024. After pouring the beans into a strainer, she said she noticed what appeared to be animal remains, including hair and bone. The report relayed her account; it did not independently identify the material as a rat or establish that the can contained one. PerthNow’s 9 March 2024 report quoted Whitburn saying, “The closer I looked, the more apparent a claw became.”
The report said Whitburn contacted Coles the following day. A Coles spokesperson said the company was investigating with its supplier, described supplier inspections and quality checks, and said: “We have apologised to the customer for their experience and have commenced an immediate investigation with our supplier.” The report did not publish the investigation’s outcome.
Which beans were withdrawn, and where?
According to the PerthNow report, the affected product was Coles home-brand red kidney beans with a best-before date of 02/10/2026. In Australian date format, that is 2 October 2026. The reported withdrawal covered these areas:

The article did not state a can size, batch or lot code, or supplier name. It reported a date and broad product description, so do not assume a can is affected based on the date alone. Check the exact product identifiers against any authoritative notice. FSANZ explains that recall notices can identify products by details such as product name, brand, packaging, dates and batch or lot codes: FSANZ food recalls.
Was this a formal recall?
The 2024 report described Coles as withdrawing the beans from shelves; it did not identify a formal FSANZ-coordinated recall notice. Those terms are not interchangeable: a reported retail withdrawal does not by itself establish that a formal consumer recall was issued. FSANZ says recalls for food that has reached consumers are published on its current recall page. The material available here does not establish whether a later official notice or investigation result was issued.

What to do if you have a can
If you are concerned about a can, do not eat its contents. Check the brand, product name, packaging, best-before date and any batch or lot code against an authoritative recall notice; FSANZ advises consumers to compare the identifying details on a product with the notice. The 2024 report supplied no batch or lot code, so the date alone cannot confirm a match.
- Keep the can and original packaging.
- If you found a foreign object, keep it as well, and refrigerate any uneaten portion.
- Report a food-safety concern to the relevant local food regulatory contact. FSANZ provides guidance on complaints and recalls at its food recall FAQ.
What is not established
The account of animal remains is attributed to the customer, not independently verified in the report. The report also does not establish the supplier investigation’s outcome, a regulator’s findings, the can’s exact size or batch, or a formal recall notice. A separate social-media claim about Coles chickpeas in December 2023 was also mentioned in the report, but it is a distinct allegation and does not corroborate this red kidney bean account.
