What “best cookies in Australia” means here
CHOICE, an Australian consumer group, named the Coles Bakery Dreams Crumb True New York Choc Chip Cookies the top product in its comparison published on 30 September 2024. The result means first place among the 22 varieties included in that test; it is not a formal national award or a claim that every Australian shopper will prefer them.

CHOICE’s panel tasted the cookies blind, without knowing the brands, and assessed appearance, aroma, flavour and texture. The overall Expert Rating gave sensory performance a 90% weighting and nutrition a 10% weighting, with the nutrition component based on the Health Star Rating. Three experts tasted samples at room temperature and judged them independently. The test excluded bite-sized, triple-chocolate and gluten-free cookies. CHOICE’s guide explains the test and its results.
How the winning cookie scored
The Dreams Crumb True cookie received a 78% CHOICE Expert Rating and an 83% sensory score. Those are different measures: the overall score includes nutrition, while the sensory score reflects the panel’s assessment of the eating experience.

What the panel thought of the texture and chocolate
CHOICE’s expert notes praised the dark chocolate chunks and described a crunchy cookie with some chew in the centre. The notes also included criticism that the texture could be dry and that chocolate distribution was uneven. These are observations from the panel, not a guarantee of how a particular pack will taste.

Its comparison guide says unit-price comparisons used Sydney store prices from July 2024; the listed unit price for the winner was $1.83 per 100 g. How the winner compared with the runners-up
The top three show why the overall score and the sensory score should not be treated as interchangeable. The Coles Ultimate cookie had the strongest sensory score, while Dreams Crumb True placed first overall. CHOICE listed 30% chocolate chips for Dreams Crumb True and 40% for the Ultimate cookie.
| Product | CHOICE overall rating | Sensory score | Chocolate chips listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coles Bakery Dreams Crumb True New York Choc Chip Cookies | 78% | 83% | 30% |
| Coles Ultimate Cookies 40% Chocolate Chip | 77% | 84% | 40% |
| Woolworths Bakery Chocolate Chunk Cookie, baked in store | 75% | 82% | Not stated in CHOICE’s guide |
Scores and chip percentages are from CHOICE’s 2024 comparison. The figures do not establish current prices or availability for the alternatives. CHOICE’s release reports the ranking and scores.
Should you buy them?
If you are shopping for a supermarket chocolate-chip cookie, Dreams Crumb True is a strong option to consider based on its first-place result in CHOICE’s defined 2024 test. Whether it suits your taste depends on what you want: the panel noted dark chocolate chunks and a crunchy, slightly chewy centre, but also dryness and uneven chocolate distribution. For a value comparison, use the current shelf price and pack weight at your local store rather than relying on the historical $5.20 figure.
