The US Coleman Pro 45-Quart Hard Cooler (model 5408) offers a stated 45-quart capacity, a 74-can capacity without ice and a manufacturer claim of up to four days of cooling. Its practical appeal is strongest for car camping and group outings: it has an attached drain, tie-down straps and a seat-capable lid. The main portability drawback is straightforward—at 19.8 lb empty, it has no wheels. Coleman’s four-day figure is a product claim, not a result from a published test protocol.

What the Coleman Pro 45 is—and which version this review covers

This review focuses on Coleman’s US-listed Pro 45-Quart Hard Cooler, model 5408. The manufacturer lists SKU 2193939 for its Neptune color page. Coleman lists a plastic body, 45-quart volume and capacity for up to 74 cans without ice. The empty cooler weighs 19.8 lb, and its exterior dimensions are 24.53 × 16.38 × 17.17 inches (length × width × height). Coleman’s US product listing is the source for these figures.

Specifications differ on Coleman’s European product page, which gives capacity as 42.5 liters in its feature text and 43 liters in its specifications. It also lists four days of ice retention in the specifications but promotes up to 4.5 days in the feature text. That page describes the European Pro 45 QT Cooler Box, not a basis for changing the US model’s listed figures. Coleman Europe’s listing gives the regional details.

Does the Coleman Pro 45 keep ice for four days?

Coleman says the cooler stays cold for up to four days, attributing that claim to its insulated lid and body, with walls up to two inches thick. The US listing does not state an ambient temperature, ice-to-food ratio, opening frequency or other test conditions. Treat four days as Coleman’s maximum stated claim—not a guaranteed duration or an independently verified result.

  • 74-CAN CAPACITY: 45 quarts holds up to 74 cans without ice.
  • 4 DAYS COLD: Stays cold for up to 4 days thanks to fully insulated lid and body.
  • EXTRA-THICK WALLS: Walls are up to two inches thick to maximize durability and ice retention.
  • 30% LIGHTER THAN ROTOMOLDED COOLERS: The Coleman Pro 45QT is designed to be 30% lighter than rotomolded coolers of the same capacity so you can get outside easier.
  • RUGGED HANDLES: Comfortably carry your fully loaded cooler from backyard to tailgate to sidelines.

One commenter in a Reddit discussion about the Coleman Pro 45 reported keeping food at or below 40°F for four days, sometimes around four and a half, at about 70°F with a 2:1 ice-to-food ratio. They said they used frozen water bottles and ice packs. This is one person’s account, not a controlled test or evidence of typical performance. For a multi-day trip, plan for changing weather and cooler access, keep food chilled before packing, and monitor food temperature rather than relying on a claimed duration.

Capacity: enough for a weekend camping trip?

A stated 45-quart volume and 74-can capacity without ice make this a plausible size for car camping, beach gatherings and other group outings where a vehicle can carry the cooler. The 74-can figure is not the same as usable food capacity on an iced trip: ice takes up room, and the listing does not specify how much food or ice the cooler holds together. A three-day camping plan should account for the actual menu, the number of people and how much ice or other cooling material you intend to pack.

There is no included basket listed in the product information. One Reddit participant expressed a wish for baskets, but that individual comment does not establish whether compatible baskets are available. If separate organization is important, check current accessory fit and dimensions before buying one.

How portable is it when full?

The cooler weighs 19.8 lb before adding ice, drinks or food, and Coleman Europe’s listing identifies its regional Pro 45 as having no wheels. The US product listing does not advertise wheels either. That combination makes it a more natural fit for short carries between a vehicle and a campsite than for a long walk across sand. The portability assessment follows from the listed weight and wheel status; it is not a measured carrying test.

Its exterior footprint—24.53 × 16.38 inches, at 17.17 inches high—also merits checking against your vehicle’s cargo space and storage spot at home. Coleman says the cooler is designed to be 30% lighter than rotomolded coolers of the same capacity. That is the manufacturer’s comparison; no independent weight comparison is established here.

Features that matter in everyday use

  • One-hand latch: Coleman lists a stainless-steel latch designed to open with one hand.
  • Attached drain: An oversized drain plug stays attached, reducing the chance of losing it while emptying the cooler.
  • Vehicle tie-downs: Tie-down straps are listed for securing the cooler during transport.
  • Seat-capable lid: Coleman says the lid is designed to serve as a seat; the listing does not state a weight rating.
  • Other details: The product page also lists rugged handles, non-slip feet and a padlock opening.
  • Antimicrobial liner: Coleman describes the treatment as helping prevent product odor, mildew and mold. The company expressly says it does not protect people from food-borne disease organisms.

Coleman lists a 10-year limited warranty. The duration alone does not explain what is covered or excluded, so consult the current warranty document for the buyer’s region before relying on it.

Who should consider the Coleman Pro 45?

The Pro 45 is worth considering if you want a hard cooler with a relatively high stated capacity for vehicle-based camping or group outings, and value an attached drain, tie-down capability and a lid intended to double as a seat. Its nearly 20 lb empty weight and lack of wheels are meaningful drawbacks if your plans involve carrying it far, especially over sand. The four-day cooling claim may help frame expectations, but the product page’s missing test conditions make it a poor basis for promising a specific food-safe duration.

When comparing it with another 45-quart hard cooler, compare the evidence and practical fit, not just the headline retention number. Look at whether cooling figures are manufacturer claims or controlled tests and what conditions were used; empty weight and wheels; usable room after ice; exterior dimensions; latch, drain and tie-down design; warranty terms; and current price. Comparable test results and prices for competing models are not established here, so this information does not identify a performance winner.
