For active order-book trading, compare Coinbase Advanced with Kraken Pro; for a quick or recurring purchase, compare the final app previews instead. The total cost can include a spread, trading fee, payment charge, and withdrawal cost, while product availability and account protections vary by location and account.

How to compare Coinbase and Kraken fees
Start with the action you plan to take. A simple app purchase is not priced the same way as an order-book trade, so comparing headline rates across those different actions can be misleading.
Simple buys, sells, and conversions
Coinbase says simple buy and sell orders include a spread in the quoted price. The spread varies, and the preview displays the applicable charges. Fees can also depend on payment method, order size, market conditions, location, asset, and other factors. Check the confirmation preview for the transaction in question rather than assuming a universal simple-buy rate. Coinbase’s pricing and fees disclosure explains the variables.

Kraken’s fee schedule, accessed October 7, 2026, lists a 1% trading fee for instant and recurring trades and 1.5% for custom orders; payment-method charges may apply as well. Instant-buy and sell quotes include a variable spread. These figures describe the listed Kraken app/Buy Crypto actions, not Kraken Pro order-book trades. See Kraken’s fee schedule and its explanation of how trading fees work.
Coinbase Advanced and Kraken Pro
For active trading, compare Coinbase Advanced with Kraken Pro: both use order books and maker/taker fees. Coinbase says Advanced orders do not include the spread charged on simple buys because customers interact with the order book. Kraken Pro fees follow a volume-based schedule; trades through the Kraken app or Buy Crypto widget do not count toward those order-book volume tiers. The rate any individual pays depends on the applicable schedule, tier, and whether an order is maker or taker. Check the live platform schedule and order preview rather than treating one rate as universal. Kraken’s fee explanation describes the distinction between order-book trades and app purchases, while Coinbase’s disclosure covers Advanced and simple-purchase pricing.

Subscriptions and waived fees
Coinbase says Coinbase One may provide zero trading fees for eligible activity, but limitations and other charges remain. Its disclosure identifies a 1% limit-order execution fee and notes that separate decentralized-exchange charges may apply. Read the current plan terms and transaction preview before treating a trade as fee-free.
Kraken+ waives trading fees on up to $10,000 monthly volume for listed major currencies on eligible app or web Buy, Sell, or Convert actions. Spreads and card-processing fees still apply, and the benefit excludes Kraken Pro spot, futures, API, and OTC trades. The waiver is therefore limited to specified activity, not a general exemption from trading costs. Kraken’s fee schedule sets out its terms.

A fair transaction-by-transaction check
- Select the same asset, amount, payment method, and order type on both services.
- Review each full confirmation preview, including the quoted price, spread, trading fee, and any deposit or card charge.
- Include withdrawal and network costs if you plan to move the asset off the exchange.
- For order-book trading, compare maker or taker behavior and your actual 30-day volume tier on each platform.
The preview reflects the particular transaction; it does not make costs identical across payment rails, order types, or account tiers.
Features and availability
Both services offer a simple app experience and more advanced trading tools, but the most useful comparison is whether the specific assets, funding methods, and products you want are available to your account where you live. Global asset counts do not establish local eligibility.

In a comparison article published around September 2026, Kraken reported 600+ listed cryptocurrencies and staking rewards on 26 assets, compared with around 300 cryptocurrencies and staking on roughly 8–12 assets for Coinbase. Those are Kraken’s own comparative figures, not independently audited counts. Kraken also reported U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs for eligible U.S. clients on both platforms, with different product counts, and tokenized-equity availability in some non-U.S. jurisdictions. These offerings and counts can change; check each service’s current local listings and product terms. Kraken’s comparison page is the source of those claims.

Security and custody: what the companies disclose
Security disclosures describe controls and processes; they are not a guarantee that an account cannot be compromised or that one platform is categorically safer for every user.
Coinbase’s stated controls
Coinbase describes encryption, holding customer assets 1:1, and two-factor authentication with security-key support. It also says Coinbase is a public company that publishes quarterly financial statements with annual independent audits, and offers multi-approval withdrawals through Coinbase Vault. These are Coinbase’s descriptions of its practices and features. Coinbase’s security page provides the overview, and its security guidance describes account protections.
Kraken’s stated controls and Proof of Reserves
Kraken describes cold- and hot-wallet custody solutions, physical security measures, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification, and completion of a SOC 2 Type 1 examination. It also says it periodically works with an external auditor on Proof of Reserves, allowing users to verify covered tokens held in their account at the time of an audit. That verification is limited to the assets and snapshot date covered; it should not be read as a guarantee of solvency under all conditions or as a complete audit of liabilities unless the relevant report establishes that. Kraken’s security page describes these controls and the stated scope of its Proof of Reserves process.
Protect the account you control
- Use a unique password and strong two-factor authentication; consider a security key where the platform and your recovery setup support it.
- Secure the email account and phone number used for recovery, and watch for phishing attempts before approving a sign-in or withdrawal.
- Use available withdrawal controls, and avoid keeping more on a custodial exchange than you need for trading.
If you suspect unauthorized access to Coinbase, its help instructions allow you to lock the account. While locked, trading, transfers, and account-setting changes pause. Follow Coinbase’s account-lock instructions promptly.
Which platform fits your use?
- Choose based on simple purchases: compare the actual preview for your asset, amount, and payment method; neither platform’s headline fee alone captures the spread and possible payment charges.
- Choose based on active trading: compare Coinbase Advanced and Kraken Pro using your likely maker/taker behavior and volume tier, not the fee for an app purchase.
- Choose based on features: confirm local access to the assets, staking, stock or tokenized-equity products, funding rails, and trading tools you need.
- Choose based on security: review each company’s stated controls, understand the limits of the evidence, and weigh how well its account protections fit your own security practices.
No independent apples-to-apples fee test or user survey establishes a universal winner. The better option depends on your transaction type, total quoted cost, local eligibility, and the controls and products you value.
