Cohesity’s post-Veritas pitch is to make backup serve two jobs: help organizations recover after a cyberattack and make protected business data searchable with AI. That could reduce duplication and simplify operations, but “real-time” recovery is not the same as a verified, fully working business service, and AI search over backups raises substantial access and privacy questions. The claims deserve evaluation against an organization’s own recovery tests, governance requirements and total costs.
What changed after Cohesity combined with Veritas?
At a Seoul press conference on April 15, 2025, Cohesity presented its combined portfolio as a way to bring recovery, security and AI together. CSO Online reported the event on April 24, 2025, including Cohesity Korea CEO Lee Sang-hoon’s claims about the company’s scale and recovery performance. Those figures are company claims, not independent market or performance verification. CSO Online’s account
The strategic logic is more significant than a rebrand: Cohesity contributes its data-protection platform, while Veritas contributes NetBackup, an established enterprise backup portfolio and installed base. Cohesity says NetBackup customers can keep, extend or transform their environments, rather than implying that every customer has already moved onto a single unified product. Cohesity’s NetBackup page
For buyers, that distinction matters. DataProtect, NetBackup, cyber-vaulting and Gaia/Data Insights are related offerings, not interchangeable names for one feature set. Confirm which product, edition, workload support and migration path a proposal actually includes.

Why cyberattack recovery is different from restoring a backup
In an ordinary outage, the latest usable copy may be sufficient. After ransomware or another intrusion, the latest copy might contain encrypted, altered or infected data. A recovery team must choose a clean recovery point and avoid bringing attacker access or persistence back into the restored environment.
Cohesity’s product materials describe controls such as immutable snapshots, MFA, threat scanning, anomaly detection, malware and indicator-of-compromise searches, identification of last-known-good backups, and recovery workflows. The precise capabilities depend on product and configuration; these descriptions do not establish that any particular deployment will recover cleanly or meet a target recovery time. NetBackup capabilities DataProtect capabilities
Immutability helps prevent protected copies from being altered or deleted, but it is not a complete recovery strategy. A clean backup can still be unusable if retention is inadequate, the backup control plane or credentials were compromised, identity systems are unavailable, application dependencies are missing, or malware predates the retained copies. Cohesity also markets cyber vaulting, threat monitoring, sensitive-data classification and recovery orchestration; these controls still need to be designed, configured and tested for the organization’s environment. What “real-time” or “up to 10 times faster” recovery does—and does not—tell you
Cohesity Korea’s reported claim of recovery up to 10 times faster refers to a company assertion whose workload, comparison baseline and test conditions were not provided in the coverage. Cohesity’s explanation is that its approach can avoid a traditional process of merging full and incremental backups. That may shorten parts of a restore workflow, but it is not a universal benchmark or a guarantee for every workload.
Keep four measures separate when assessing the claim:
- Recovery-point objective (RPO): the amount of recent data the business can tolerate losing.
- Recovery-time objective (RTO): the time allowed before a workload or service must be available.
- Rapid access: a VM, file or database may be mounted, cloned or made accessible before a full restore finishes.
- Clean operational recovery: systems, identity, networks, applications and dependencies have been restored, checked and made safe for users.
Cohesity describes DataProtect as offering fully hydrated snapshots, rapid recovery points and instant mass restore, and advertises recovery of up to 1,000 VMs. These are vendor product claims, not evidence that a particular customer will recover that number of systems within a particular time. Before treating “instant” as a business outcome, ask whether the demonstration includes data transfer, deduplication, malware scanning, application validation and recovery of identity and network services. Ask what exactly is available at the advertised point: a mountable copy, a functioning application, or a validated production service. The reported coverage does not supply those test details.
How Gaia searches backup data without a separate data lake
Cohesity describes Gaia as an AI-powered conversational search assistant for enterprise data in backups. The reported examples include asking natural-language questions to find employee email mentioning confidential merger-and-acquisition material or contracts containing early-termination penalties. The stated approach uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): the system retrieves relevant content and uses it as context for a language model’s answer. The “without the data lake” argument is that a company may avoid copying historical content into a separate analytics repository before searching it. Cohesity’s platform materials present Gaia and identify Data Insights as an add-on for AI-powered answers from backup data. Packaging and add-ons

This can be useful when the relevant information already exists in protected backups and the goal is discovery across unstructured files such as email, PDFs and documents. It does not mean that every AI project can dispense with a lake or warehouse, or that backup automatically provides a well-curated analytical corpus. Backups can include duplicates, obsolete versions, deleted-but-retained material, incomplete exports and data captured while a system was compromised. Searching in place may reduce data duplication, but it does not remove the need for indexing, retention decisions, governance or cost controls.
RAG can ground an answer in retrieved material, but it does not guarantee accuracy. The available product descriptions do not establish independent answer-accuracy testing, error rates, supported content coverage, or whether every answer displays verifiable evidence. Require a demonstration using representative data and test how the system handles conflicting versions, missing context and unsupported questions.
Security and privacy questions to resolve before enabling AI search
Making old backups easy to query can expose information that was difficult to find before: employee correspondence, customer records, financial or health data, contracts and sensitive transactions. Search capability should therefore be treated as a new access surface, not just a convenience feature.

- Permissions: Do AI results inherit the source system’s permissions, and can a user search material from another department?
- Audit: Are prompts, retrieved documents and answers logged in a way security and legal teams can review?
- Data handling: Where are indexes and models hosted? What are the residency, encryption and key-ownership arrangements, and is customer data used to train shared models?
- Lifecycle: How are retention, deletion, legal holds and historical versions handled in search results?
- Content safeguards: Can sensitive data be classified, redacted or masked before it is returned? How are stale, duplicate or compromised files identified?
Cohesity lists platform controls including granular role-based access, MFA, encryption, immutable snapshots, sensitive-data classification and monitoring. A useful evaluation should test recovery and AI discovery separately, then assess how they fit together operationally. Cohesity’s DataProtect is offered as software, cloud services or managed/service-provider delivery, while NetBackup has product-specific licensing terms and meters. Published marketing descriptions do not substitute for a workload support matrix, contract review or recovery exercise. DataProtect delivery options NetBackup licensing terms
- Map workloads: List the actual virtual machines, databases, NAS, SaaS, physical servers, cloud-native services and identity systems that must be protected. Confirm support for each workload and version rather than relying on broad platform language. Cohesity publishes a DataProtect technical datasheet for workload details. DataProtect datasheet
- Run a clean-recovery exercise: In an isolated environment, establish how operators identify a likely clean point, scan it, restore it, and validate the application and dependencies. Include identity, DNS, secrets and network controls where relevant.
- Measure comparable recovery: Use your own representative workloads and record the baseline, configuration, data volume, scan settings and what counts as “recovered.” Separate time to access data from time to return a service to validated operation.
- Test Gaia with governed content: Use realistic permissions and sensitive data. Check result-level access, citations or evidence, audit logs, latency, model and prompt handling, and answers to ambiguous or contradictory queries.
- Calculate total cost: Ask for the licensing meter and included capabilities, then account for retention, replication, vault storage, indexing, cloud storage and egress, implementation, support, add-ons and migration. Cohesity’s packaging page lists Core and Enterprise editions and add-ons including Replication, Cyber Vaulting, Data Insights and Platinum Service; it describes one-, three- or five-year subscriptions but publishes no numerical list prices. Who should consider Cohesity—and what else to evaluate
The combined pitch is most relevant to large or complex organizations with an existing NetBackup estate, heterogeneous or hybrid-cloud workloads, formal cyber-recovery objectives, and a desire to consolidate protection and data discovery. It is less compelling for a small organization seeking inexpensive, simple backup; a buyer needing transparent self-service pricing; or a team looking only for a narrow SaaS backup product. It is not a substitute for EDR, SIEM, SOAR, identity security or incident-response services.
Compare operating models, not just feature lists. Rubrik is an evaluation candidate for buyers prioritizing a security-focused backup and cyber-recovery approach. Commvault merits consideration where broad workload coverage and recovery orchestration are central. Veeam is relevant for organizations focused on virtualized, cloud and Microsoft environments and a broad partner ecosystem. Microsoft Azure’s native services may fit Microsoft-centric estates, though buyers should check whether they cover heterogeneous enterprise protection needs. Where internal teams cannot perform clean-room recovery or forensic validation, evaluate managed recovery and incident-response providers as a service alongside the software.
Across vendors, compare capacity measurement, retention, storage and egress charges, recovery orchestration, implementation, support and the cost of testing. No comparable public list prices are established here, so headline subscription figures alone would not support a sound cost comparison.
