ClearBank raised £175 million in an equity investment led by funds advised by Apax Digital in March 2022. TechCrunch described the sum as about $230 million using exchange rates at the time; the deal was announced in pounds, not as a separate dollar-denominated round. Apax said the funding would support international growth, with Europe first and North America later.
How much did ClearBank raise from Apax?
Apax announced a £175 million equity investment led by funds advised by Apax Digital. TechCrunch’s $230 million figure was a contemporaneous conversion of that sterling amount, not a second figure for a separately denominated investment. Apax’s March 2022 announcement and TechCrunch’s report give the two presentations of the amount.
Why did Apax invest in ClearBank?
ClearBank provides regulated banking infrastructure, including clearing and embedded-banking services for business clients. The stated plan was to use the investment to accelerate international growth, beginning in Europe and then pursuing North America and Asia Pacific. Apax’s announcement framed the funding as support for expanding ClearBank’s offer across markets, rather than as a consumer banking product launch. Charles McManus, ClearBank’s CEO at the time, said, “The next challenge is delivering this innovation globally.” Apax’s announcement also identifies the investor and the expansion rationale.
What expansion has ClearBank documented since 2022?
ClearBank’s 2025 Annual Report describes a substantial European build-out during the year ended 31 December 2025. The company reported that it had passported to 15 countries, opened a French branch and served 28 European clients by year-end. It also said it was processing well over one million transactions a month. These are company-reported operating figures, not independent estimates. In its 2025 results announcement, ClearBank said it added 21 European clients during the year. It also reported £17.8 billion in deposits at the end of 2025 and a 51% increase in group fee-based revenue. Those figures describe the company’s later scale and performance; they are not part of the 2022 Apax investment amount. ClearBank’s 2025 results announcement reports these figures.
Has ClearBank launched in the United States?
The 2022 announcement named North America as a future expansion region, but the company’s 2025 materials cited here document European operations and do not confirm a US launch. The original ambition should not be treated as proof that US operations began. ClearBank describes itself as a regulated banking-infrastructure provider authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by the PRA and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). A company’s regulatory status in the UK does not by itself establish authorisation or an operational launch in another country. ClearBank’s company materials describe its UK regulatory status.

What does the 2026 Scale-up Unit announcement mean?
In February 2026, the Bank of England said ClearBank was among six firms accepted into the first cohort of the PRA and FCA Scale-up Unit. The initiative provides regulatory support to fast-growing firms; cohort membership is not a new banking licence and does not guarantee approval for a particular expansion.
