Classic Hollywood Stars’ Net Worth in Today’s Dollars: What the Estimates Show

Celebrity Net Worth’s estimates put classic stars’ reported wealth into inflation-adjusted comparisons—but those figures are not audited values or verified 2026 dollars.

Published estimates put some classic Hollywood stars’ wealth at striking levels: Celebrity Net Worth reported that Randolph Scott had an estimated $100 million at death, while Greta Garbo’s estimate was $32 million. The same publisher gave inflation-adjusted figures of $220 million and $90 million, respectively. Those are the publisher’s comparisons—not audited valuations or verified amounts recalculated to 2026.

What “adjusted for today’s dollars” means

An inflation adjustment translates a historical dollar amount into a comparison based on consumer prices. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Inflation Calculator uses the CPI-U: the U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted. The CPI tracks average price changes over time for a representative basket of consumer goods and services; it does not measure celebrity wealth or investment performance.

For a consistent conversion, the calculation is: historical amount × (target-period CPI-U ÷ source-period CPI-U). The result depends on the selected source and target periods. Celebrity Net Worth’s figures below are reproduced as that publisher reported them; the available material does not establish a clear target period for its adjustments, so they should not be labeled “2026 dollars.” BLS Inflation Calculator · BLS: Consumer Price Index Questions and Answers.

Star Reported net worth at death Inflation-adjusted figure reported by Celebrity Net Worth
Greta Garbo $32 million $90 million
Cary Grant $60 million $130 million
Mae West $20 million $58 million
Charlie Chaplin $50 million $197 million
Mary Pickford $40 million $131.6 million
Randolph Scott $100 million $220 million

These are selected examples, not a definitive ranking of classic stars. The amounts are secondary-source estimates, not official estate records or audited statements. Celebrity Net Worth’s 2016 list of deceased celebrities is the source for the six pairs of figures.

Marilyn Monroe: net worth and estate proceeds are different figures

Celebrity Net Worth estimates Monroe’s net worth at death at $800,000. The same page says approximately $370,000 remained after settlement costs and fees, citing her will filed in Los Angeles County. These figures describe different things: an estimated net worth and an amount reportedly left after costs. They should not be combined or treated as two estimates of the same measure. The page has no publication date stated in the available record. Celebrity Net Worth’s Marilyn Monroe estimate.

What a CPI comparison cannot tell you

A consumer-price adjustment answers a narrow question: what historical dollar amount corresponds to a similar consumer-price level under the chosen CPI periods? It does not show what a star’s investments would have earned, what assets would be worth now, or how much later licensing and rights income generated. Nor does it resolve debts, taxes, ownership shares, or whether a source counted a probate estate or broader personal net worth.

That distinction matters especially when comparing estimates from different publishers or eras. Treat the reported adjusted amounts as illustrative purchasing-power comparisons, not as present-day appraisals of what these performers—or their estates—would own.
