Civil War opened at No. 1 in North America on April 12, 2024, with an estimated $25.7 million in ticket sales. That was A24’s biggest opening weekend at the time, surpassing Hereditary—but it is no longer the studio record: Backrooms later took that title. The distinction matters because an opening-weekend record, a film’s lifetime gross and its profitability are three different measures.
What made Civil War’s opening history-making?
In April 2024, Civil War became A24’s first film to open at No. 1 and its biggest opening to that date. The Associated Press (AP) reported a $25.7 million North American weekend estimate, enough to take first place and move Godzilla x Kong from the top position. The result beat A24’s previous opening benchmark, Hereditary, which opened to $13.6 million in 2018. These are rounded, nominal opening figures, not inflation-adjusted comparisons. AP’s opening-weekend report and PBS’s April 16, 2024 coverage describe the film’s No. 1 debut and the then-record for A24.
The database figure is slightly more precise: Box Office Mojo lists the opening at $25,537,368 across 3,838 theaters. Its listing gives April 12, 2024 as the release date and 3,929 theaters as the widest release. AP’s $25.7 million is the contemporary Sunday estimate; the two figures differ in precision, not in the basic account of the opening. Box Office Mojo’s Civil War listing provides the theater and gross figures.
Is Civil War still A24’s biggest opener?
No. Civil War held the opening-weekend record after its 2024 debut, but AP reported in 2026 that Backrooms set a new A24 record, describing Civil War as the prior high-water mark at $25.5 million. So it is accurate to call Civil War A24’s record opener at the time; it is not accurate to call it the studio’s current biggest opening. AP’s 2026 report on the new record updates the film’s status.

How much did Civil War make overall?
Box Office Mojo currently lists Civil War’s worldwide theatrical gross at $127,268,065. Its reported split is:
| Market | Reported gross |
|---|---|
| Domestic | $68,756,072 |
| International | $58,511,993 |
| Worldwide | $127,268,065 |
These are gross ticket sales, not the amount A24 received after theaters and other parties’ shares, and not the film’s profit. Box Office Mojo’s figures are listed on its Civil War title page.

What do the budget and IMAX figures tell us?
Production budget is not break-even cost
AP reported a $50 million production budget and noted that it excludes millions spent on marketing and promotion. Comparing that production figure directly with worldwide ticket sales cannot establish whether the film made a profit: it leaves out marketing and the distribution of box-office revenue. The available figures do not provide the film’s full marketing spend or a net-profit calculation.
IMAX’s share of opening weekend
AP reported that the 400 IMAX screens generated $4.2 million, or 16.5% of the domestic opening gross. That is a measure of opening-weekend sales only, not an accounting of IMAX revenue over the film’s full theatrical run.

Why did the opening attract attention?
The release was wide for A24: it opened in 3,838 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo. AP noted that the studio had not always launched films nationwide from the start, making the release scale relevant context—but the reported figures do not prove that scale alone caused the record.
The film’s premise also arrived during the 2024 U.S. election year, when political discourse was prominent. AP quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian: “The title alone is enough to spark a conversation in a year where the political discourse is top of mind.” PBS reported that the film stirred debate and interviewed director Alex Garland. Those are interpretations of the film’s topicality, not measurements showing how much political interest drove ticket sales.

AP reported that the opening beat pre-release projections of $15 million to $24 million. It also cited EntTelligence’s estimate that more than 1.7 million patrons attended over the weekend, with Los Angeles, New York and Dallas the top three markets. Those are reported weekend estimates, rather than a complete attendance count or proof of why people chose the film.

- Opening weekend: a film’s ticket sales in its debut weekend; this is the measure behind Civil War’s former A24 record.
- Lifetime gross: reported ticket sales over the theatrical run, such as the $127.3 million worldwide total listed by Box Office Mojo.
- Profit: a financial result that cannot be calculated from gross sales and production budget alone. Marketing, distribution and revenue sharing also matter.
- Comparisons: compare domestic with domestic or worldwide with worldwide, opening with opening, and nominal figures with nominal figures unless a comparison is explicitly adjusted for inflation.
The available figures establish the former opening record and the listed lifetime gross, but they do not provide a complete inflation-adjusted ranking of A24 films or enough cost and revenue detail to determine Civil War’s profit.
