Start with the City of Chicago’s CAREERS Online Job Search, the official listing route for City job opportunities. Search by keyword or job number, narrow results with filters, then use the live posting to confirm that the job is still open and check its qualifications, salary, deadline, and any testing instructions.
Where to search for City of Chicago jobs
Open the City’s CAREERS page and use CAREERS Online Job Search. The portal provides fields for job number and keywords, along with filters for job field, location, and organization. You can also create or update a candidate profile, set preferred working criteria, and save searches for later.
The City’s transparency page also points to CAREERS Online Job Search as the source of City job opportunities. Vacancy counts and individual listings change, so treat a search result as a starting point—not confirmation that a position remains available. Open the requisition and verify its status and details before applying.
Choose the right hiring route
The Department of Human Resources (DHR) page links to general applicant information and testing resources, as well as specialized routes for some jobs and programs. Begin with the route that matches the role:
#1 Best Overall
- Most City positions: Search CAREERS Online Job Search and follow the instructions on the specific requisition.
- Specialized paths: DHR lists links for internships and volunteer programs, Fire jobs, Police jobs, Chicago Public Health jobs, Chicago Public Library jobs, and a Firefighter/EMT eligibility list.
- Bid jobs: These are described as opportunities for City employees represented by specified unions, rather than a general public hiring route.
Use the City’s Department of Human Resources page to find the relevant applicant information and route.
How to compare postings and apply
There is no single application checklist or hiring sequence established for every City position. Requirements, deadlines, salary details, and testing steps depend on the posting. Before you apply, review the requisition itself and compare the details that affect your eligibility and decision:

What the City says about Fair Chance Hiring
The City’s Fair Chance Hiring policy says a criminal history—including a prior arrest, incarceration, or conviction—does not automatically disqualify someone from City employment. According to the policy, a background check occurs after a conditional offer. The City then assesses whether a conviction conflicts with the duties and responsibilities of the selected job.

The policy also identifies categories of information the City says it will not consider, alongside legal exceptions for certain regulated roles. Read the current policy for the full list and exceptions; Fair Chance Hiring does not mean that background checks are never conducted.
Request an application accommodation
Applicants who need a reasonable accommodation because of a disability or pregnancy to participate in the application process can contact DHR at [email protected] or 312-744-4976. The CAREERS page asks applicants to be prepared to provide supporting information. Check the current CAREERS page to confirm contact details.

Separate workforce support from City applications
The Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership offers career coaching, skills training, job placement, and American Job Center services for job seekers in Chicago and suburban Cook County. These services may help with broader career preparation, but they are not the City’s job application portal. Apply for a City vacancy through the route named on its official posting.
