Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →City Index is the stronger choice for most experienced UK traders because it offers spread betting, TradingView, MT4 and a wider selection of trading tools. Plus500 is easier to use if you want a single proprietary platform with spread-based CFD pricing and a relatively simple interface.
That conclusion applies only when the two brokers are being compared within the same jurisdiction. In the US, this is not a normal City Index-versus-Plus500 CFD comparison: Plus500’s US operation offers futures and prediction-market products, while its international CFD service is not available to US residents.

Both brokers offer leveraged products. Leverage can magnify losses as well as gains, and a position may be closed automatically if your available margin falls too far. Neither a low headline spread nor a free demo removes that risk.

Which broker has the better platforms?
City Index
City Index gives traders a choice of:
- Web Trader, with access to City Index markets, performance analytics and risk-management tools.
- TradingView, for chart-based trading, screeners and technical indicators.
- MetaTrader 4, including Expert Advisors and the MetaTrader marketplace.
- City Index mobile apps for iOS and Android.
There is an important account detail here: an ordinary City Index CFD account cannot simply be used as an MT4 login. You need a separate City Index MT4 account. City Index says its standard CFD account can connect to TradingView.
Plus500
Plus500’s core CFD service is built around its own proprietary platform, available through web, Windows and mobile versions. It includes charts, indicators, alerts, stop-loss and take-profit tools, so a new trader can generally manage the whole workflow in one interface.
That simplicity is also the limitation. The core Plus500 CFD platform does not offer the same third-party-platform choice as City Index. Plus500’s US futures operation is different: it advertises the Plus500 Futures Platform and supports additional futures platforms, including T4, CQG, TT, QST, Sierra Chart and Rithmic, subject to the relevant account and clearing arrangement. Those US futures platforms should not be confused with the international Plus500 CFD service.
Platform verdict: City Index wins for flexibility, charting choice and automation. Plus500 wins if you prefer one straightforward proprietary app and do not need TradingView or MT4.
Markets and products
City Index’s UK materials advertise more than 13,500 global markets overall, including more than 4,700 global shares, over 84 forex pairs, more than 40 major indices and over 20 commodities. It also lists bonds, options and other markets. Those figures vary between City Index pages and account types, so they should not be treated as a guaranteed number available to every retail customer.
Plus500’s CFD range is jurisdiction-specific. Depending on the local entity, it includes shares, forex, indices, commodities, ETFs and options. The precise instruments, trading hours and leverage depend on where your account is registered.
The product difference matters more than the raw market count for many UK customers. City Index offers spread betting, which can be useful to UK residents because qualifying spread-betting profits are generally treated differently for tax purposes than CFD profits. Tax treatment depends on personal circumstances and can change; spread betting is not automatically tax-free in every situation.
Plus500’s main UK comparison is CFD-based. It does not offer an equivalent UK spread-betting product in the current official materials checked for this review.

Trading costs: which is cheaper?
There is no reliable universal answer. The cost of a trade depends on the instrument, position size, account currency, market conditions and how long you hold the position.
City Index costs
City Index uses fixed or variable spreads depending on the market. It generally charges no commission on most CFD and FX trades, but equity CFDs can carry a commission. Other possible costs include:
- Overnight financing on eligible leveraged positions held beyond the relevant financing time.
- Wider spreads or different execution costs for larger orders.
- Currency-conversion charges where the account and instrument currencies differ.
City Index says the spread shown in the order ticket is the current spread. Published variable-spread figures may instead show a minimum and an average over a defined historical period. Do not assume the minimum is the spread you will receive at all times.
For example, City Index’s UK advertising has shown fixed index-CFD spreads from 0.4 points, including 1 point on the UK 100 and 2 points on Wall Street. These are market-specific advertised minimums, not a universal cost for every index, trade size or market condition. Futures CFDs may have the cost of carry incorporated into their price rather than an additional overnight financing charge.
Plus500 costs
Plus500 mainly earns money through the buy/sell spread incorporated into its quoted prices rather than through a separate CFD dealing commission. That does not make the account free. Possible charges include:
- Overnight funding.
- Currency conversion, which the cited general fee information says can be up to 0.7% of realised net profit or loss when the instrument currency differs from the account currency, depending on the applicable entity.
- A wider spread when using a Guaranteed Stop Order.
- An inactivity fee of up to US$10 per month after at least three months without logging in, subject to the relevant jurisdiction and account agreement.
Before opening a Plus500 trade, you can inspect the instrument’s current trading information:
- Search for the instrument.
- Select the “i” Details icon.
- Scroll to Trading Info to view the spread and other information.
For overnight funding, select the Details link beside the instrument name. The platform shows the funding time and daily percentage.

- EASY SETUP AND CONTROL: Setting up the lamp is simple and needs just 3 steps: connect the screws, clamp it to your desk, and plug it in. A clear instruction manual is included and our helpful customer service is always here to help.
- 3 LIGHT COLORS & DIMMABLE: The LED reading lamp offers three light colors: 3000K warm white, 4500K natural white, and 6000K cool white. Made with high-quality silicone and metal materials, this gooseneck desk lamp can bend up to 100,000 times without breaking. The clamp lamp has a silicone pad to prevent scratching the table.
- The spread when opening.
- The spread when closing.
- Overnight financing for the expected holding period.
- Currency conversion.
- Any equity-CFD commission.
- The cost of a Guaranteed Stop, if used.
- Potential inactivity charges.
For US futures, compare the applicable futures commission and exchange, clearing or regulatory fees as well as any relevant account charges; do not compare those costs as if they were CFD spreads.
Pricing verdict: Plus500 is easier to understand at headline level because it emphasizes quoted spreads and no separate CFD dealing commission. City Index may be more attractive to active forex and index traders who want to compare fixed and variable spreads or use specialist platforms. Neither broker is automatically cheaper without a like-for-like calculation.
Account management and withdrawals
Plus500 funding path

- Choose a payment method and complete the requested fields.
- Select Submit.
On mobile, open Funds Management from the Menu button.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
To withdraw, select Funds Management → Withdrawal, choose a method, complete the fields and select Open a Withdrawal. Plus500 says withdrawals are normally processed within one to three business days, although it generally returns funds to the payment method used for the deposit first.
City Index funding path
City Index directs UK customers to MyAccount for funding, withdrawals and profile management. The exact button layout can vary by platform and region. Its documented funding workflow includes opening Account Funding from the top-right menu and selecting Add Funds. That particular support page is for City Index Singapore, so do not copy its minimum deposit, payment methods or fees into a UK account comparison.
For withdrawals, use the Withdraw option in the funding area. City Index may request a bank statement dated within the previous three months for a bank withdrawal; the cited support page says screenshots are not accepted.
Demo accounts
Both brokers offer demo accounts, but a demo is primarily a way to test the interface and order workflow. It does not prove live execution speed, slippage, order rejection rates, financing debits or margin-closeout behaviour.

City Index offers demos for Web Trader and MT4. Its UK educational material refers to £10,000 in virtual funds, while another regional page refers to $20,000. The amount is therefore account- or jurisdiction-specific rather than one universal City Index balance.
Plus500 advertises a free, unlimited demo account. Quotes and functionality may depend on the relevant service and jurisdiction, and demo conditions may differ from live trading.
Risk controls and operational traps
City Index
- MT4 access: You need a separate City Index MT4 account; a standard CFD login will not work.
- Margin changes: City Index can change margin requirements, including through step-margin levels for larger positions.
- Automatic close-out: City Index says positions are at risk when margin falls below 100% of the total requirement and that it will usually begin automatic closure at 50%. There may be no warning before closure.
- Gapping: During volatile markets, a position can be closed at a worse price than expected because the market moves between available quotes.
- Large orders: Orders larger than the displayed standard size may receive a wider spread.
Plus500
- Guaranteed Stops cost more: The charge is reflected in a wider spread. Availability is limited to selected instruments, the order must be added when opening a new position, and it cannot be removed after placement, although its level can be changed.
- Inactivity: Under the cited agreement, logging in is enough to avoid the inactivity charge. It applies to real-money accounts, not simply to an unused demo.
- Withdrawal routing: Funds are generally returned to the original deposit method before a backup method is used.
- US futures settlement: Deposits can take up to three business days to settle. Funds may be tradable during that period but unavailable for withdrawal.
- US futures auto-liquidation: Plus500 Futures lists a $10-per-contract fee when auto-liquidation occurs.
US residents: a different comparison
US residents should not use the UK City Index and Plus500 CFD comparison as though both brokers offer the same service.
Plus500US Financial Services LLC is a futures commission merchant registered with the CFTC and NFA ID 0001398. Its US service offers futures and prediction-market products, not the standard international Plus500 CFD account. The current Plus500 Futures fee schedule lists $0.49 per micro contract and $0.89 per standard contract per side, before applicable exchange and NFA charges.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
City Index’s UK service is FCA-regulated and its terms state that it is not intended for residents of places where local law prohibits distribution. It is not a US brokerage offering. Therefore:
- If you are a US futures trader, Plus500 may be relevant.
- If you are looking for CFDs in the US, neither broker is the straightforward choice described by this comparison.
Common claims that need correcting
| Claim | What the current information shows |
|---|---|
| “Plus500 has no fees.” | It can apply spreads, overnight funding, currency conversion, Guaranteed Stop premiums, inactivity charges and, in the US futures service, commissions and other fees. |
| “City Index is commission-free.” | There is generally no commission on most CFD and FX markets, but equity CFDs can carry commission. |
| “Plus500 supports MT4.” | The core Plus500 CFD service uses its proprietary platform; MT4 is not a standard platform listed for it. |

| “A demo proves live execution quality.” | A demo cannot establish live slippage, execution during volatility, financing or margin behaviour. |
Even the percentage of retail CFD accounts that lose money is not a permanent broker-wide number. Current City Index pages show different figures, including 68%, 70% and 71%, while Plus500 pages show figures such as 76%. These percentages can vary by entity, product and reporting period. Check the risk warning attached to the exact account application and note its date.

Does Plus500 offer MT4?
Not for its core Plus500 CFD platform. Plus500 uses its own proprietary web, Windows and mobile platforms. City Index offers MT4, but you need a separate City Index MT4 account.
Can I spread bet with Plus500?
The current official UK materials reviewed do not identify an equivalent Plus500 UK spread-betting product. City Index does offer UK spread betting.
Can US residents trade CFDs with Plus500?
No. Plus500’s US operation is focused on futures and related products through Plus500US Financial Services LLC. Its international CFD service is not available to US residents.
Are City Index and Plus500 safe?
Both have FCA-regulated UK entities, but regulation does not eliminate the risk of losing money on leveraged products. The legal entity, client-money rules, protections and available products depend on your country and account.
Recommended Free Tools
Which broker is best for beginners?
Plus500 may be easier for beginners because its proprietary platform keeps charts, orders and risk controls in one interface. However, ease of use does not make CFDs low-risk. A demo account can help you learn the workflow, but live execution and financing can differ.
The Bottom Line
Choose City Index if you are a UK trader who wants spread betting, TradingView, MT4 or broader platform functionality. Choose Plus500 if you value a simple proprietary interface and want to manage CFD trades without choosing between third-party platforms.
For long-term leveraged positions, compare financing rather than just the advertised spread. For US residents, treat Plus500 as a possible futures provider—not as a CFD equivalent to City Index. CFDs and spread bets are high-risk leveraged products: you can lose money rapidly, and they are not suitable for everyone.
