Three separate developments reported between September 8 and October 7, 2026, show organizations changing how they structure work, ownership or financing: Citi is shortening its investment-banking analyst program, Fairfax has agreed to acquire Boots, and LIV Golf is pursuing new financing while in Chapter 11. They are not connected transactions. Their shared significance is how each may affect the people and institutions tied to it—and how much remains unresolved.
Why is Citi shortening its analyst program?
Citi is moving its investment-banking analyst program from three years to two, according to a company-confirmed internal memo reported by Fortune. The change also applies to analysts currently in their third year: they are due to be promoted on January 1 if they meet performance standards.
One reported pressure is private-equity recruiting. David Friedland, Citi’s co-head of North America investment banking, told Bloomberg, as quoted by Fortune: “The reality that private equity is interviewing so early in a banker’s career is very unfortunate and to some extent disappointing,” and, “It’s very hard to make a choice to go into another field in the first month you land on Wall Street.”
Fortune attributes a striking change in recruiting timing to executive search firm Odyssey Search Partners: private-equity recruiting typically began after about 11 months of junior bankers’ training in 2010, compared with less than a month by 2024. That context helps explain why banks may want to shorten the period before advancement, but it does not establish that PE recruiting alone caused Citi’s decision. The same report cites hiring experts who suggest that AI-related changes in investment banking could also be relevant; that remains an interpretation, not a confirmed reason from Citi.

What is the Boots deal?
On October 7, Fairfax Financial Holdings announced that it had entered into agreements with Wittington Investments, the Weston family’s private holding company, to acquire Boots. This is an announced agreement, not a completed acquisition.
| Deal term | What Fairfax announced |
|---|---|
| Purchase price | Approximately US$8.9 billion, inclusive of assumed debt, according to Fairfax Financial Holdings. |
| Equity commitment | Fairfax committed to provide, or cause an affiliate to provide, up to approximately US$2.3 billion toward the purchase price, according to Fairfax. |
The figures describe the announced transaction, not the final funding mix or a completed transfer of ownership. Fairfax’s announcement identifies risks that include the possibility the transaction will not close on anticipated terms or timing; the available announcement does not establish a closing date or further regulatory timeline.

What is LIV Golf’s proposed lifeline?
LIV Golf entered a restructuring support agreement with BC Partners Credit and voluntarily commenced a Chapter 11 proceeding in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey on September 8, 2026, according to LIV Golf’s announcement. The league said the contemplated recapitalization would leave the reorganized company majority-owned by players. That ownership structure is proposed and depends on court and relevant stakeholder approval.
Financing is proposed, not all secured or funded
LIV said the Public Investment Fund agreed to provide US$49.6 million in debtor-in-possession financing, subject to court approval. On October 5, BC Partners Credit announced an initial committed investment as the first part of targeted US$300 million cumulative financing. Its release says the financing is subject to bankruptcy court approval and customary conditions. The US$300 million is a cumulative target, not a statement that the full amount has already been funded.

The Associated Press reported on October 6 that the financing would allow LIV to begin planning for a 2027 season with ten tournaments, half at international sites. That is AP’s account of a plan, not a finalized official schedule. LIV’s FAQ says the league intends to return to team competition in 2027 under new ownership, but it has not announced a definitive schedule or individual event decisions. The league has said it intends to emerge from Chapter 11 in early 2027; that outcome remains subject to approvals.
What ticket holders should know
LIV’s FAQ says pre-purchased 2027 event tickets remain valid and are not eligible for refunds at this time. Because the future season and event plans remain unsettled, ticket holders should follow direct communication from the league for any changes.

How the three developments compare
| Development | Status | Structure at issue | Who may be affected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citi analyst program | Two-year program announced; third-year analysts’ promotion is conditional on performance. | Career and promotion timeline. | Junior analysts weighing advancement and outside recruiting opportunities. |
| Boots | Acquisition agreement announced; completion is not established. | Proposed ownership transfer, with an announced price and limited financing commitment details. | Fairfax, Wittington and Boots stakeholders, subject to the transaction’s outcome. |
| LIV Golf | In Chapter 11; recapitalization, financing and 2027 plans remain subject to conditions or approvals. | Proposed player-majority ownership and staged financing. | Players, creditors, employees, fans and ticket holders. |
The common thread is structural change, not a direct connection: Citi is adjusting a talent pathway, Fairfax and Wittington have agreed to a proposed ownership change, and LIV is seeking a reorganization and financing. Each announcement has a different status, so an announced plan should not be mistaken for a completed outcome.
