Cisco Tests Local Metals Recovery to Address AI Supply Strain

Cisco and DEScycle are testing a modular recovery process for Cisco e-scrap boards. The demonstration-scale trial aims to measure performance and economics, but no recovery rates or supply-chain benefits have been reported.

Cisco is testing whether metals can be recovered from its electronic scrap boards through a distributed, modular process—but the trial has not yet shown how much material it can recover or whether the approach will lower costs or environmental impacts. The demonstration-scale work with UK-based DEScycle is intended to generate recovery, process, and economic data and assess whether the system can fit into existing reverse supply chains.

What Cisco and DEScycle are testing

DEScycle announced the trial on 13 April 2026. Cisco hardware will be disassembled, and boards from that equipment will be processed in controlled batches at DEScycle’s demonstration plant in Wilton, UK. DEScycle says the work will evaluate its demonstration unit at large-batch scale, measure recovery performance, develop techno-economic analysis, and make process and traceability data available to Cisco. The companies also intend to assess how the approach could integrate with existing reverse supply chains. DEScycle’s announcement describes the project’s goals; it does not publish completed trial results.

The announcement frames demand for critical and precious metals as being driven in part by AI infrastructure, electrification, and advanced manufacturing. But it provides neither a quantified forecast of AI-related demand for specific metals nor an estimate of how much this trial could contribute to supply. The link to AI is therefore the strategic problem the companies are exploring, not a demonstrated supply-chain impact. DEScycle’s announcement identifies Cisco as an early participant in the effort; DEScycle also says Cisco took part in its 2024 Series A funding round.

How the proposed route differs from Cisco’s existing process

Cisco says its current recycling route for printed circuit boards involves removing the boards, shredding and sorting them, then sending them to specialized smelters. Cisco names copper, palladium, silver, and gold among the metals recovered through that route. Its reporting says contracted recyclers are preapproved and certified to one or more e-scrap standards, including R2, R2 RIOS, e-Stewards, and WEEELABEX. Cisco’s circular-economy page describes that existing pathway.

DEScycle characterizes its approach as distributed and modular metals processing. The potential strategic difference is whether recovery can be carried out closer to where electronics are collected or dismantled, while connecting with established reverse logistics. The trial is meant to test that fit; the announcement does not establish that it will replace smelting or that recovered metals will return to Cisco manufacturing.

What the trial has not established

There are no published trial-specific recovery rates, cost comparisons, energy-use figures, emissions results, or commercial-scale operating results in the cited announcement. Data Center Knowledge likewise describes the effort as a demonstration-scale project validating performance and cost, not as a proven alternative. Data Center Knowledge’s report covers the project’s current stage.

Those missing measurements matter because a recovery method can look promising in principle but still face trade-offs in yield, throughput, consistency, operating expense, energy use, and transport. A useful comparison with conventional smelting would require evidence on:

  • Recovery rates for each metal and how consistently they hold across batches.
  • Throughput, operating costs, and the capital required to deploy the process.
  • Energy use and emissions, including the effects of transporting scrap and recovered material.
  • Traceability and chain of custody, plus practical fit with existing collection and reverse-logistics systems.
  • Whether performance at demonstration scale can be maintained at commercial scale.

Until those results are reported, it would be premature to call the DEScycle route cheaper, cleaner, higher-yielding, or a meaningful new source of metals for AI infrastructure.

How this fits Cisco’s wider circularity and sourcing efforts

The trial sits alongside Cisco’s product-design, recycling, and mineral due-diligence work; it is not evidence that those efforts have already created a closed-loop supply of recovered metals. Cisco reported that in FY25, 100% of new product and packaging designs incorporated its Circular Design Principles, 89% of products could be disassembled into individual components, and 97% could be disassembled using common tools. Cisco also reported 45% recycled plastic content by the end of FY25, below its stated 50% goal. These are company-reported design and materials figures, not measurements of the DEScycle trial. Cisco’s circular-economy reporting provides the figures.

Cisco says its responsible-mineral due diligence covers copper, gold, tin, tantalum, tungsten, cobalt, lithium, nickel, aluminum, and graphite. The company says it does not buy raw minerals directly from smelters or refiners and works with suppliers on due diligence. Recovering material from retired equipment could complement that work, but the available description does not show that the trial changes Cisco’s sourcing practices or removes the need for responsible primary sourcing. Cisco’s responsible-minerals page explains its stated approach.

What Cisco customers can do with retired equipment

Organizations retiring Cisco hardware can check Cisco’s customer takeback and reuse program for an applicable return route. Cisco says more than 99% of returned products go to reuse or recycling, but availability and handling depend on the return pathway and geography. That existing program is separate from the DEScycle trial; the pilot announcement does not promise that customer returns will be processed at Wilton. Check Cisco’s takeback and reuse page for current eligibility and location details.
