Cisco completed its acquisition of Armorblox on July 14, 2023, after announcing its intent to buy the company on May 31. Cisco said it wanted Armorblox’s AI and machine-learning security capabilities and team to help advance Cisco Security Cloud, including work on attack prediction, threat detection and security policy enforcement. Those were strategic aims, not published performance results or proof that particular features are available today.

When did Cisco acquire Armorblox?

Cisco announced its intent to acquire Armorblox on May 31, 2023, and said the transaction was completed on July 14, 2023. Armorblox was a privately held AI/ML security software company headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, according to Cisco’s completion announcement. Cisco’s July 14, 2023 announcement

Why did Cisco acquire Armorblox?

Cisco presented the acquisition as part of its AI-first Security Cloud strategy. It said Armorblox’s capabilities and team would expand Cisco’s AI/ML capabilities and accelerate Security Cloud. Cisco identified several intended areas of improvement:

  • Predicting attacks more effectively.
  • Detecting threats more rapidly.
  • Applying security policies adaptively.
  • Improving the experience for both users and IT teams.

These points describe Cisco’s rationale for the deal; the cited announcements do not report measured results showing that the acquisition achieved them. In its May announcement, Cisco security chief product officer Raj Chopra said, “Leveraging Armorblox’s use of Predictive and Generative AI across our portfolio, we will change the way our customers understand and interact with their security control points.” Cisco’s May 31, 2023 announcement

What did Armorblox’s AI do, and what did Cisco describe afterward?

Cisco characterized Armorblox as an AI/ML-based security software company and highlighted its use of large language models and natural language understanding in cybersecurity. The acquisition was intended to bring those capabilities into Cisco’s broader security strategy; it was not the purchase of a physical product line.

In June 2023, Cisco described previews of generative AI intended to simplify security policy management and improve threat response. The announcement included a Security Operations Center Assistant and an initial policy-management use case focused on firewall rules. Cisco’s June 7, 2023 announcement

In a December 2023 account, Cisco AI/ML product manager Ravi Bhandia, a former Armorblox team member, described development of a generative AI assistant for Cisco Firewall administrators. The described tasks included troubleshooting in natural language, locating policies, summarizing configurations and surfacing documentation. Cisco’s December 12, 2023 blog

Do those announcements mean the features are available now?

No conclusion about current availability, product packaging or support lifecycle follows from these dated announcements alone. Cisco’s 2023 previews and development account establish what the company described at that time; they do not confirm present-day availability. Nor do they establish that any single later feature came solely from Armorblox. Buyers evaluating Cisco security products should verify current capabilities and terms directly with Cisco.

What is the significance for Cisco’s security strategy?

The deal added an AI/ML security software team and capabilities to Cisco’s stated effort to make Security Cloud more predictive and responsive. The announcements connect that strategy to policy management and security operations, but they do not provide acquisition-specific performance metrics or independent evidence of business outcomes.
