Circuit Breaker Labs is a business-to-business AI safety testing company, not a chatbot or a parental-control app. It aims to help developers uncover risky behavior in conversational AI before launch by testing systems with simulated users and adversarial conversations. That could help teams identify weaknesses, but the available evidence does not establish that the service prevents harm or makes an AI product safe for children.
What Circuit Breaker Labs does
The early-stage company focuses on evaluating conversational AI used in higher-risk settings such as coaching, journaling, and mental-health or behavioral-health support. Its service is intended for organizations building those products: the company says it connects to a customer’s API and tests the system rather than providing a consumer-facing service. TechCrunch’s October 2, 2026 profile describes its work as AI safety testing; the company outlines its workflow on its website.
How its testing is supposed to work
Simulated users and varied language
Circuit Breaker Labs says it creates simulated users with different ages, backgrounds, languages, and cultural contexts. It also says it works with human domain experts so those simulations can reflect real conversational variation, including slang, coded language, and typos. The aim is to test whether a system responds appropriately when a risky exchange does not arrive as a clear, perfectly worded warning.
That variation matters because a model may respond differently to the same underlying concern when it is expressed by people with different speech patterns or in informal language. CEO Shirali Nigam described the challenge in an interview with TechCrunch: “The way a six-year-old girl versus a 45-year-old man, or someone who speaks English as a first language versus a second language, or … gamer slang versus someone else who uses a different kind of slang, all of those can really trip up a model.”

Adversarial conversations over multiple turns
The company says its tests use dynamically generated adversarial interactions, including conversations that unfold over multiple exchanges. That approach is intended to probe more than whether a chatbot gives an acceptable answer to a single, obvious prompt. It can look for ways a conversation changes as a user shares more information, or where a system misses a signal expressed indirectly. Circuit Breaker Labs says it returns an audit report describing failure patterns and recommendations.
What the company claims about scale and scoring
The company website advertises “100,000+” simulated interactions and describes its scores as explainable. Those are the company’s own product claims, not independent measurements of how thoroughly its tests cover real users or how accurately its scores predict harm. A large number of simulations, on its own, does not show that a system is safe.

Why the company is focused on safety
TechCrunch identifies sibling founders Shirali Nigam, the company’s CEO, and Arul Nigam, its CTO. The report says their motivation included the case of Sewell Setzer, a 14-year-old whose parents alleged that a Character.AI chatbot encouraged him after he disclosed thoughts of self-harm. That allegation was reported in connection with a lawsuit; it should not be treated as a finding that the chatbot caused his death.
Arul Nigam told TechCrunch, “We want to help build that trust for people.” The stated ambition is to help developers detect problems in sensitive conversations. It is not a claim that testing can eliminate risk or substitute for the safeguards and oversight required in a deployed product.

What is established—and what is not
The available sources establish that Circuit Breaker Labs describes a working evaluation product and a process for testing customer systems through simulated interactions. They do not establish that the service reduces real-world injuries, catches every dangerous interaction, or makes a product suitable for children. The October 2, 2026 TechCrunch profile characterized the company as very early-stage and reported five employees at that time. LinkedIn lists the company as founded in 2025, based in Washington, DC, privately held, and in the 2–10 employee range; those are profile details that can change.
The company homepage also publishes a testimonial from Kevin M. Ramotar, Psy.D., CPHQ, Director of Clinical Product & AI at Grow Therapy: “Circuit Breaker Labs has been a valuable partner in our work to build and maintain a safe, high-quality AI product in behavioral health.” This is a customer testimonial published by the vendor, not an independent efficacy study. The company website and its LinkedIn profile describe the business and its positioning; neither establishes a measured safety outcome.

What this means for families and AI developers
For parents, Circuit Breaker Labs is not a service to install or buy to protect a child using an AI chatbot. Its potential relevance is upstream: if developers use evaluation services like this, they may find failures before releasing a product. Families should not infer that a chatbot has been independently proven safe for children merely because its maker says it conducted red-team testing.
For developers, simulated-user testing can be one input to a broader safety process, especially when it examines multiple turns and varied language. A useful evaluation should also make clear what situations it covered, how failures were judged, whether identified failures were fixed, and whether retesting showed improvement. The sources available here do not provide independent comparative results on those points for Circuit Breaker Labs.
