Who replaced David Cordani as Cigna CEO?
Brian Evanko succeeded Cordani as CEO of The Cigna Group effective July 1, 2026. The company announced the transition on March 3, 2026, and its SEC filing says the board had appointed Evanko to the role on February 25, effective July 1. The company’s current board profile lists Evanko as CEO and Cordani as Executive Chair.
Evanko was an internal successor, not an outside hire: he was president and COO when the company announced the change and had nearly 30 years with Cigna, according to the announcement. The company’s 2026 proxy says the board retained a third-party search firm and considered potential candidates; the available disclosures do not establish that external candidates were excluded.

What experience did Brian Evanko bring to the CEO role?
Evanko had been president and COO since March 2025. The SEC filing lists his earlier senior roles in this order:
- Executive vice president and CFO of The Cigna Group, and president and CEO of Cigna Healthcare, from January 2024 to March 2025.
- Group CFO from January 2021 to January 2024.
- President of Government Business from November 2017 to January 2021.
- President of U.S. Individual Business from August 2013 to November 2017.
The SEC filing identified Evanko as 49 at the time of the appointment disclosure. The company announcement described him as having nearly 30 years with Cigna as of March 2026.

How did the board describe the succession process?
The 2026 proxy says the board considers CEO succession annually and when needed, and characterizes this appointment as the outcome of a deliberate, multi-year process. Its account says the board retained a third-party search firm, considered potential candidates, and reviewed executive-development actions. These are the company’s descriptions of its board process.
The March announcement presented the transition as a way to maintain momentum. Cordani said, “Now is the right time to transition leadership to build on our progress and carry our momentum forward.” Eric Wiseman, then identified as lead independent director, called Evanko “an exceptional leader and the right person to guide The Cigna Group into its next chapter.” Those statements express the company’s view, rather than an independent assessment of either executive.

What changed in Cigna’s scale during Cordani’s tenure?
In its March 2026 shareholder letter, The Cigna Group compared 46 million customers and $18 billion in annual revenue at the start of Cordani’s tenure with more than 180 million customer relationships and more than $275 billion in annual revenue at the time of the letter. These are company-reported figures using different customer categories and dates; customer relationships should not be read as a directly equivalent count of customers, and the comparison alone does not establish what drove the change.
The company’s current board profile separately reports more than 185 million customer relationships and approximately 67,700 colleagues. Those are profile figures, not the March shareholder-letter figures.
