Stop before you buy. If Chrome, Safari or Edge displays a full-page fraud, dangerous-site or certificate warning, close the tab and verify the seller independently. Do not enter card details, passwords or one-time codes, and do not disable browser protection just to claim a bargain.
Do not buy from a site that triggers a full-page browser security warning. Close the tab, verify the seller through a trusted channel, and shop elsewhere unless you can independently establish that the warning is a technical false positive. Chrome, Safari and Edge do not publish one permanent list of “bad shopping websites”; their warnings are dynamic and may flag phishing, malware, deceptive pages, unsafe downloads, invalid certificates or compromised legitimate sites.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters. A warning is a reason to stop and investigate—not proof that every website without a warning is safe. Even https:// only encrypts the connection; it does not prove that the seller is genuine. The FTC specifically warns that scammers can encrypt fraudulent websites too. FTC online-shopping guidance
What each browser warning means
| Browser | Warning you may see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | “Dangerous site,” “Fake site ahead,” “Did you mean?” or a full-page red warning | Do not continue, enter information or download anything. Chrome may be detecting phishing, malware, unwanted software, malicious advertising or social engineering. |
| Safari | “Fraudulent Website Warning,” a deceptive-site warning, or a certificate/connection warning | Leave the site. Do not enter payment or login information, especially if the domain is not exactly the business you intended to visit. |
| Edge | A Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warning that the site is suspicious, dangerous or blocked | Close the page. SmartScreen may be warning about phishing, malware or attempts to steal passwords or card details. |
Chrome: “Dangerous site” is the clearest stop signal
Chrome’s Safe Browsing protection is enabled by default. Its red warning can appear when Google identifies a website as associated with phishing, malware, unwanted software or social-engineering attacks. Google recommends not visiting such a page. Google’s Chrome warning guide

Do not click “Visit this unsafe site” merely because a bargain is attractive. Do not disable Safe Browsing to complete checkout. To check the setting on a computer, open Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Security, then choose Enhanced protection or leave Standard protection enabled. Google describes “No protection” as not recommended. Chrome Safe Browsing protection levels
Chrome’s less dramatic labels need context:
- “Not secure” means the connection is not private. Do not submit card, password or identity information.
- “Your connection is not private” can be caused by a certificate, network or device problem. It is not automatically proof that the merchant is a scam, but it is a good reason to stop rather than bypass the warning.
- “Fake site ahead” or “Did you mean?” can indicate a look-alike domain or typo-squatting attempt.
Chrome explains the difference between connection status and dangerous-site detection in its site-security guide.
Safari: Fraudulent Website Warning and certificate alerts
Safari can warn when a site is suspected of phishing or has been reported as deceptive, malicious or potentially harmful. Apple recommends not visiting a site after that warning appears. Fraudulent pages may imitate banks, retailers, government agencies or other familiar businesses to steal passwords and personal information. Apple’s Safari fraud-warning guidance

A certificate warning is not something to ignore because the page “looks professional.” It can mean the certificate is untrusted, expired, mismatched or otherwise unsuitable for the domain. Apple says to cancel when the certificate does not match the website owner or comes from an untrusted issuer.

Edge: SmartScreen is a shopping-relevant warning
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen checks websites against changing lists of reported phishing and malicious-software sites and analyzes pages for suspicious behavior. When it detects a threat, Edge can show a warning or block the page. Microsoft says the warning may indicate an attempt to trick you into installing dangerous software or revealing passwords or credit-card information. Microsoft’s SmartScreen explanation
To check it, open Edge > Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security, then turn on Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. On a work or school device, an administrator may control the setting. Edge security settings

Scam stores increasingly copy brand logos, product photographs, customer-service language and checkout designs. They may arrive through a social-media ad, search result, text message or email. A familiar logo is not evidence that the seller is affiliated with the brand.
Common warning signs include:
- A domain that differs from the real company by one or two characters, uses an unusual ending, or adds words such as “outlet,” “clearance” or “official.”
- Prices dramatically below the normal price for a branded product, with pressure to “buy now” before the offer expires.
- Only a web form or free email address for contact, with no verifiable business address or working telephone number.
- Copied policies containing another company’s name, vague delivery promises, or a return address that does not make commercial sense.
- Checkout that insists on gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or a payment app instead of a normal card transaction.
- Reviews that exist only on the seller’s own site, repeat the same language, or appear in large numbers immediately after the store launched.
- Requests for unnecessary information such as an account password, government ID, bank login or one-time verification code.
- Pop-ups claiming your device is infected, demanding a phone call, or asking you to install a browser extension or remote-access tool.
Use the seller’s name and exact website address in a separate search, adding complaint, review or scam. The FTC cautions that star ratings can be fake or misleading, so do not treat a five-star score as independent verification. FTC shopping advice
HTTPS, a padlock and “secure checkout” are not enough
HTTPS protects data while it travels between your browser and the website. It does not answer the more important question: who operates the website and will they deliver what you paid for? A fraudulent seller can obtain a valid certificate and display the same padlock as a legitimate retailer.

Before paying, inspect the complete domain in the address bar. Do not rely on a shortened link, a sponsored ad or the first result in search. For a bank, card issuer or major retailer, type the known address yourself or use the official app. If the warning appeared after clicking a message, go back and find the company through a trusted source.
The safest way to evaluate an unfamiliar online store
- Stop at the warning. Close the tab. Do not enter card details, passwords, one-time codes or personal information.
- Write down the exact domain. Compare every character with the company’s verified domain. Watch for substituted letters, extra hyphens and misleading subdomains.
- Check the business independently. Search for complaints and reviews outside the seller’s website. Look for a consistent history rather than a handful of perfect ratings.
- Read delivery, refund and return terms. Confirm who pays return shipping, where returns go, the deadline, exclusions for sale items and the promised shipping date.
- Compare the price. A large unexplained discount is a risk signal, especially for scarce or high-demand products.
- Inspect the payment screen. Prefer a credit card where available. Never proceed if the seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or another difficult-to-reverse method.
- Use the minimum information. A retailer generally does not need your banking password, email password or a code sent by your bank.
- Save evidence. Keep the product page, price, order confirmation, promised delivery date, policies and all messages with the seller.
Credit cards usually offer stronger dispute protections than other payment methods. The FTC says to contact the card company promptly if you were charged for merchandise that never arrived, arrived damaged or was materially different. In the United States, a billing-error dispute generally requires written notice reaching the card issuer within 60 days of the statement showing the error; follow the instructions and deadlines from your issuer. FTC online-shopping guidance
If you already bought from a warned or suspicious site
If you paid but the order has not arrived
Contact the seller once using independently verified contact details, but do not send more money or identity documents to “release” a refund. Then contact your card issuer or payment provider, explain that the transaction is fraudulent or that the merchandise was not delivered, and ask about a dispute or reversal. Keep the order number, screenshots and correspondence.
If you entered a password
Change it immediately anywhere you reused it, beginning with email and financial accounts. Use a unique password and turn on multifactor authentication. Do not use a reset link sent by the suspicious site; open the official service directly.
If you entered card or bank details
Call the number on the back of the card or your bank’s official website—not a number supplied by the suspicious page. Ask whether the card should be blocked or replaced, monitor transactions and report anything unauthorized. If you paid through a money-transfer app, contact the app and the linked bank or card provider immediately and request a reversal.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When can you safely return to a site?
Do not return merely because the warning disappeared. A legitimate site can be temporarily compromised, and a scam site can remain unflagged. Return only after you have independently confirmed the correct domain, verified the business through a trusted channel, found coherent policies and reviews, and confirmed that the payment method gives you meaningful recourse.
If a legitimate business you trust is blocked, use a different channel—such as its official customer-support number or verified social account—to alert it. Do not ask the seller to persuade you to disable browser protection. A legitimate merchant should want the problem fixed for every customer.
The practical rule is simple: a browser warning ends the purchase until proven otherwise. A padlock, low price, polished design or positive on-site reviews cannot substitute for verifying the seller and preserving your ability to recover the money.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does HTTPS mean an online store is safe?
No. HTTPS encrypts the connection, but it does not prove that the seller is legitimate. Scammers can use HTTPS too. Verify the domain, business identity, policies and payment protections before buying.
Should I continue if my browser shows a dangerous-site warning?
Close the page and do not enter payment, login or personal information. Verify the website through a trusted source and shop elsewhere unless the business can independently confirm a technical error.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I do if I already paid a suspicious website?
Contact the card issuer, bank or payment provider immediately and ask about blocking the card, reversing the transaction or disputing the charge. Save screenshots, receipts and messages. Also change any reused password.
Do Chrome, Safari and Edge publish a list of all unsafe shopping websites?
No. Browser warnings are dynamic and may identify phishing, malware, deceptive pages, invalid certificates or compromised sites. No warning is not a guarantee that a seller is honest.
The Bottom Line
Never bypass a Chrome, Safari or Edge fraud warning to complete a purchase. Verify the exact domain independently, research the seller, pay by credit card when possible, and contact your card issuer or payment provider immediately if you already paid.
