The reported £25m price for Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg is not a confirmed current asking price, and the available reporting does not verify new Newcastle United interest as of 8 October 2026. Historical coverage gives conflicting figures and describes clubs monitoring or considering him—not confirmed bids.
What the reported £25m figure means
The figure comes from CaughtOffside, which reported on 8 February 2025 that Rigg could be available for around £25m, attributing the estimate to sources close to his situation. That is a historical media report, not a confirmed Sunderland asking price, a bid or a completed transfer fee. CaughtOffside’s February 2025 report also named Newcastle among possible suitors; it does not establish a new approach in 2026.
The same outlet had reported a £25m–£30m range on 25 October 2024, again citing sources. In June 2025, TEAMtalk reported that Sunderland valued Rigg at £35m and would not entertain lower offers during that transfer window. These were separate, source-attributed reports at different times—not competing bids or verified club statements. CaughtOffside’s October 2024 report and TEAMtalk’s June 2025 report therefore do not establish Sunderland’s valuation or position today.
What the reports say about Palace and Newcastle
Crystal Palace
TEAMtalk’s June 2025 story included Palace among clubs monitoring Rigg. Monitoring is not the same as a formal bid, and the report does not verify current pursuit. A separate Guardian story dated 1 September 2026 says Palace competed with Sunderland for Malick Fofana, a different player; it provides no evidence of Palace interest in Rigg. The Guardian’s Fofana report should not be read as an update on Rigg.

Newcastle United
CaughtOffside named Newcastle among possible suitors in February 2025. TransferFeed also lists a Rigg-to-Newcastle rumour, but its £25m item is displayed as 577 days old, with still older Newcastle links on the page. The aggregator is useful for seeing the age of that item, not as confirmation of fresh interest. TransferFeed’s rumour page does not substantiate a new October 2026 approach.
How the reported figures compare
| Report date and publisher | Reported figure | What it described |
|---|---|---|
| 25 October 2024, CaughtOffside | £25m–£30m | Price range attributed to sources; not a confirmed bid or current Sunderland price. Source |
| 8 February 2025, CaughtOffside | Around £25m | Potential availability estimate attributed to sources close to Rigg’s situation; not a confirmed fee. Source |
| 11 June 2025, TEAMtalk | £35m | Reported Sunderland valuation for that transfer window, with the club said not to intend to sell then; not evidence of its current stance. Source |
What is—and is not—confirmed
The reports reviewed are secondary coverage and an aggregation page. They do not provide a current Sunderland announcement, a named direct confirmation of Rigg’s price, or a verified current bid from Palace or Newcastle. As of 8 October 2026, the defensible reading is that £25m is a historical reported estimate and that claims of fresh Newcastle interest remain unconfirmed in the available coverage.
