In April 2025, some Chinese sellers on Amazon said they were preparing to raise prices for U.S. customers or leave the U.S. market as tariffs surged. The 145% figure was a temporary high point in a fast-changing trade confrontation—not a permanent rate, a charge Amazon added to listings, or evidence that every seller raised prices or quit.
What Chinese Amazon sellers said in April 2025
Reuters reported on April 9, 2025, that Chinese Amazon sellers were preparing for two possible responses to rising U.S. tariffs: pass higher costs on to U.S. buyers through higher prices, or stop selling into the U.S. market. The report described sellers’ expectations, not a count of completed price increases or exits. The available reporting does not establish how many sellers ultimately took either step.

The pressure was not identical for every seller. A seller with goods already stored in U.S. fulfillment centers might not face the higher cost of importing replacement stock until those goods sold. Ars Technica quoted Shenzhen-based seller Brian Miller predicting that he and other sellers would need steep price increases once current inventory ran out, which he expected in one or two months. That was his forecast, not a verified industry-wide timeline.
Whether a seller could absorb added costs or felt compelled to raise prices also mattered. The reports do not provide seller-level cost data that would support ranking who was most affected or calculating a typical price increase.

What the 145% tariff figure meant
On April 10, 2025, the White House clarified that the 125% tariff announced for Chinese goods did not include a previously imposed 20% fentanyl-related duty. The administration described the resulting combined rate as 145%. The White House order records the policy action; the 145% figure was the administration’s description of the total at that moment.
That headline rate should not be read as a universal, lasting charge on every product sold by a Chinese business. Tariff treatment can depend on product coverage, exemptions, how duties apply together, and later policy or legal changes. The 145% figure describes an April 2025 policy moment, not a product-specific rate a shopper or seller can assume applies today.

Why stock location and shipment type mattered
Inventory already in the United States
Goods already imported and held in U.S. fulfillment centers were distinct from inventory a seller still needed to ship from China. The former could delay when a seller faced the cost of importing replacement products; it did not establish how long any particular seller’s stock would last. Miller’s one-to-two-month estimate was his expectation about inventory, not an average for Amazon sellers.

A separate rule took effect on May 2, 2025: the White House ended de minimis treatment for covered low-value imports from China and Hong Kong. That change concerned qualifying low-value shipments and was distinct from the 145% headline tariff. Its scope and effective date are set out in the White House order on de minimis treatment. It should not be conflated with the tariff rate on other imports.

- Digital shipping postal scale for weighing items; heavy duty yet lightweight, portable design
- Includes a postal scale and an AC adapter; black ABS with an aluminum anti-skid platform
- 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)
- Measuring units in kg, ounces, and pounds
- Additional separated large back-lit LCD display allows for reading the weighing data from a distance of up to 2m
The change affected a significant flow of goods beyond Amazon. The Associated Press reported that Chinese exports to the United States under de minimis were valued at $5.3 billion in 2018 and $66 billion in 2023, citing Congressional Research Service figures. Those amounts refer to Chinese exports shipped under de minimis, not Amazon sales.
Did Amazon add tariff charges to product listings?
No. On April 29, 2025, Amazon addressed a report about a possible display of import charges. Spokesperson Tim Doyle said, “The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products.” Amazon also said it was not planning to display tariff costs across its store. The statement concerned a consideration within the Haul team, not a rollout of tariff charges across Amazon listings.

What happened to the 145% rate afterward?
The rate did not remain at its April 2025 high. By September 28, 2026, the Associated Press reported that U.S.-China tariffs had been reduced after reaching as high as 145% the previous year. The Congressional Research Service’s February 2026 overview describes subsequent policy changes, including a legal ruling affecting tariffs imposed under IEEPA. Neither the April 2025 figure nor a general headline rate is enough to determine the current duty on a specific product.
