On January 6, 2026, Reuters reported that trader and analyst estimates put China’s purchases from the latest U.S. soybean crop at 8.5 million to nearly 10 million metric tons. That was an estimate, not the USDA-confirmed total: USDA figures cited in the same report showed nearly 6.9 million metric tons in confirmed China purchases since October.
What the January 6 report said
Reuters reported that state stockpiler Sinograin had bought 10 U.S. soybean cargoes totaling about 600,000 metric tons, scheduled for shipment from March through May. Traders and analysts estimated that China’s purchases from the latest U.S. crop had reached 8.5 million to nearly 10 million metric tons. One unnamed trader with direct knowledge of the deals told Reuters that total purchases were “very close to 10 million tons.” Reuters, January 6, 2026.
The key distinction is between reported market estimates and sales recorded with China as the confirmed destination. Reuters cited USDA data showing nearly 6.9 million metric tons of confirmed China purchases since October. It also reported roughly 3 million metric tons of USDA-confirmed sales to unknown buyers; market participants thought a sizeable share might be headed to China, but that destination was not verified.
How the later figures compare
Subsequent USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) updates describe different observation dates and marketing years. They should not be added to the January estimate or treated as a single running total.
#1 Best Overall
- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.

| Reuters, January 6, 2026 | 8.5 million to nearly 10 million metric tons | Trader and analyst estimate of Chinese purchases from the latest U.S. crop; not the USDA-confirmed count. Reuters separately cited nearly 6.9 million metric tons in confirmed purchases since October. Source. |
| FAS China report, as of February 26, 2026 | 10.8 million metric tons | China had purchased or shipped this amount toward a stated 12 million metric ton commitment. The measure combines purchases or shipments as reported by FAS; it is not the January estimate. Source. |
| FAS China report, as of February 26, 2026 | 2.19 million metric tons | Sales recorded to “Unknown”; FAS said it was unconfirmed whether they were bound for China. Source. |
| FAS China update, as of August 13, 2026 | 5.7 million metric tons | New-crop U.S. soybeans purchased for delivery in marketing year 2026/27. This is a later crop-year snapshot, not a closeout of the earlier total. Source. |
| FAS China update, as of August 13, 2026 | 3.8 million metric tons | Sales to unknown destinations; FAS noted these can include purchases by Chinese state-owned enterprises, but did not confirm the destination. Source. |
Why “unknown” sales are not confirmed China purchases
Export-sales records can identify a destination as “Unknown” rather than naming a country. Traders may infer that some such sales are intended for China, and FAS says unknown-destination sales can include purchases by Chinese state-owned enterprises. Neither point establishes that any specific sale is China-bound. The February FAS report explicitly left the destination of its 2.19 million metric tons unconfirmed.
What shaped the trade
The Reuters report placed the March-to-May shipment window during Brazil’s peak shipping season. At the time, U.S. soybeans remained more expensive than newly harvested Brazilian soybeans, although the price premium had narrowed. FAS’s September update later said a 10 percent retaliatory tariff encouraged commercial buyers to rely on South American origins; Brazil shipped record volumes from June to August 2026. Those conditions help explain why sales, origin choices and shipment timing can shift, but they do not change what a particular USDA sales record confirms.

What the figures do—and do not—establish
- The January “nearly 10 million” figure was a trader and analyst estimate, while the contemporaneous confirmed-purchase figure cited by Reuters was nearly 6.9 million metric tons.
- By February 26, FAS reported 10.8 million metric tons purchased or shipped toward a 12 million metric ton commitment; it separately kept unknown-destination sales unconfirmed as China-bound.
- The August 2026 figures concern new-crop purchases for marketing year 2026/27 and a separate unknown-destination category.
- The reviewed reporting does not establish a final closeout total for China’s MY 2025/26 U.S. soybean purchases. The later MY 2026/27 snapshot does not settle that earlier crop-year total.
For a continuing data series, USDA ERS says its Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS) data page is updated monthly; it listed September 8, 2026 as its latest update and October 9, 2026 as the next scheduled update. Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
