Re:

China’s Jingchuan Uranium Discovery Is Real—but the 30-Million-Ton Claim Is Unverified

China’s Jingchuan uranium discovery was announced in 2025. The much-repeated 30-million-ton figure remains unverified in the cited official sources.

China announced a major uranium discovery in the Jingchuan area of the Ordos Basin in January 2025, but its official announcement did not give a 30-million-ton estimate. That figure appears in later secondary coverage without a cited official resource statement in the material available. The discovery is real; its alleged size, and any resulting boost to global power supplies, are not established.

What China announced about the Jingchuan discovery

On January 10, 2025, the China Geological Survey announced a super-large uranium deposit discovery in the Jingchuan area of the Ordos Basin, according to a January 15 report by Xinhua reposted by China’s government nuclear-safety agency. The report described it as the first such discovery in an aeolian-sandstone distribution area. It said drilling began in 2017 and that four target areas encountered industrial-grade mineralization. Read the announcement report.

That “first” designation refers to the geological setting described in the announcement. It does not establish that Jingchuan is the world’s largest uranium deposit. The report also does not state a resource tonnage, grade, reserve, or project-level production forecast.

Did China discover 30 million tonnes of uranium?

The 30-million-tonne figure is not confirmed by the official discovery announcement. A March 6, 2026 Futura-Sciences article asserted that the Ordos discovery contains more than 30 million tonnes, but the material available does not establish that number through a cited official resource statement. That means the number should be treated as an unverified secondary claim—not as a confirmed reserve or resource estimate. The sources reviewed do not prove that no such estimate exists elsewhere; they do not provide one. A formal estimate would need to identify what is being counted, its classification and reference date, and whether the tonnage is uranium or uranium-bearing ore.

Why China’s other uranium totals are not the Jingchuan estimate

Two national figures offer context, but neither measures the Jingchuan discovery. They use different resource concepts and should not be compared as if they were a single tally.

Figure What it measures Source and date
More than 2.8 million tonnes China’s predicted uranium resource potential nationwide—not a measured Jingchuan deposit estimate. China Atomic Energy Authority, 2023 summary. Source.
405,700 tonnes of uranium Identified in-situ resources in China as of January 1, 2023: 190,270 tonnes reasonably assured and 215,430 tonnes inferred. OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, Uranium 2024: Resources, Production and Demand, published in 2025. Report.
More than 30 million tonnes A secondary article’s claim about the Ordos discovery; not substantiated as an official resource estimate in the cited material. Futura-Sciences, March 6, 2026. Article.

“Predicted potential” is a broader national assessment, while “identified resources” refers to deposits classified under the OECD report’s resource framework. Within the identified-resource total, reasonably assured and inferred are separate categories. None of these figures is interchangeable with a reserve estimate, and the two national totals do not establish how much uranium Jingchuan contains.

Does the discovery mean more uranium is already reaching the market?

No such link is established by the cited announcements. A separate project in Ordos, the Guo Uranium No. 1 demonstration project, reported first uranium product on July 12, 2025. The China Atomic Energy Authority said construction had begun on July 12, 2024, and described the project as using in-situ production. Its announcement does not say that the project is extracting uranium from Jingchuan. Read the project report.

A discovery, a classified resource, a reserve, and production are different stages. The January 2025 Jingchuan announcement confirms exploration success and mineralization in four target areas; it does not by itself establish an economically recoverable quantity, a mine schedule, or an increase in near-term supply.

What the headline can—and cannot—tell you about global power

Even if a deposit is large, its discovery alone does not demonstrate a near-term change in electricity generation or global energy balances. The official announcement supplies no verified Jingchuan tonnage or production timetable, and the separate Ordos project announcement does not connect its output to this discovery. The available facts therefore do not support a quantified forecast of added uranium supply or a change in China’s position in the nuclear sector.
