China’s Dadonggou deposit in Liaoning Province contains an estimated 1,444.49 metric tonnes of gold metal within 2.586 billion tonnes of ore, according to the China Geological Survey. The often-repeated $192 billion figure is a media estimate of the gold’s gross value at then-current prices—not a mine valuation, expected revenue, or profit. The Geological Survey describes Dadonggou as the largest single gold deposit discovered in China since 1949, a narrower claim than a verified global record.
Where is the Dadonggou deposit?
Dadonggou is in Liaoning Province in northeastern China. China’s Ministry of Natural Resources announced the discovery on November 14, 2025. The exploration report was reviewed and filed by Liaoning’s natural resources department in September 2025, according to the China Geological Survey.
How much gold was reported?
The China Geological Survey gives three figures for the deposit above the -720-meter elevation:
- 2.586 billion metric tonnes of ore—the rock containing the gold.
- 1,444.49 metric tonnes of contained gold metal—the estimated gold in that ore.
- 0.56 grams of gold per tonne of ore—the average grade.
Ore tonnage and gold tonnage are not interchangeable: the ore is the material that would need to be mined and processed to recover the contained metal. The figures come from the exploration report, not a statement that this quantity of gold has already been extracted.

- COMPLETE GOLD PANNING KIT FOR ADULTS & BEGINNERS: Scoop paydirt with the 12" scoop, screen it through the 6" mini gold classifier, run it through the pocket sluice box, then finish in two patented spiral riffle gold pans. Everything for a first day on the creek, packed in one drawstring backpack.
- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- 35 LB RARE EARTH MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The HUNTLEY sweeper wand's 35 lb rare earth magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
Is Dadonggou one of the largest gold deposits ever recorded?
The supported comparison is that the China Geological Survey calls Dadonggou the largest single gold deposit discovered in China since 1949. That establishes a reported domestic historical distinction; it does not independently establish that Dadonggou is among the largest deposits in the world. The broader “ever recorded” wording should therefore be treated cautiously.
Is the $192 billion figure real?
It is a reported estimate of gross in-ground metal value based on the stated gold quantity and gold prices at the time of publication. It is not an official project valuation issued by the geological survey, and the reviewed reporting does not specify the exact price input or valuation method. Because gold prices change, the estimate is price-dependent.

Gross metal value is not the amount a company could necessarily sell or keep. The figure does not account for how much gold could be recovered, the cost of exploration and mine construction, operating expenses, financing, taxes, or the time needed to develop and extract the deposit. The available reporting does not establish those economics, so $192 billion should not be read as expected revenue or profit.
Has the deposit become an operating mine?
No. The discovery and reported gold quantity come from exploration work; they do not mean commercial production has begun. The Geological Survey said nearly 1,000 employees carried out 15 months of exploration. China Daily reported that 219 planned drill holes had been completed and that work was moving to data analysis and report compilation. Those are exploration and reporting milestones, not evidence of an operating mine.

What development plans have been reported?
China National Gold Group, Liaoning Mineral Geology Group, and the Yingkou Municipal Government planned to invest more than 20 billion yuan from 2024 through 2027 in an integrated industrial chain spanning exploration through jewelry, according to China Daily. The report described a plan, not completed spending, a confirmed production schedule, or proof that a mine is operating.
China Daily also quoted Wang Yan, a professor at the CPC Shenyang municipal Party school, on the deposit’s strategic and industrial significance. That is an expert’s assessment, not a measured forecast of the deposit’s eventual output or economic return.

Why do some reports give different gold figures?
Some coverage has reported about 2.9 billion tons of ore and more than 498 tons of gold. Those figures differ from the detailed account of the reviewed and filed exploration report published by the China Geological Survey and the figures reported by China Daily. For the deposit’s reported resource figures, the Geological Survey’s 2.586 billion tonnes of ore and 1,444.49 tonnes of contained gold are the better-supported numbers.
