Chinese feed makers’ 2025 Argentine soymeal purchase became a working import route, but not evidence that China is replacing its usual soybean suppliers. Reuters reported a 30,000-metric-ton trial booking in June 2025 and later reported that the cargo reached Guangdong and cleared customs in late October. The deal tested whether Argentine meal could compete on price and pass China’s import checks while offering another option amid U.S.–China trade tensions.
What China bought—and what the deal was meant to test
In June 2025, several Chinese feed makers jointly booked 30,000 metric tons of Argentine soybean meal for July shipment, Reuters reported, citing four trade sources. The reported price was $360 per metric ton on a cost-and-freight (CNF) basis, and the cargo was expected to arrive in Guangdong in September. A Singapore-based trader described it as “just a test case,” with additional business dependent on Chinese inspection and quarantine. Reuters said it was the first bulk Argentine soymeal cargo booked since China approved imports in 2019; customs data had not shown earlier bulk purchases. Reuters, June 26, 2025
The stated logic had two parts: diversify supply options in case U.S.–China trade tensions disrupted sourcing, and take advantage of Argentine meal that traders said was cheaper than locally produced meal. Gustavo Idigoras, then head of Argentina’s oilseed crushing and export chamber CIARA-CEC, told Reuters that the parties had discussed feasibility and that the Chinese side seemed open to exports if commercial conditions allowed. That was an indication of openness, not a formal guarantee of ongoing purchases.
Why importing meal is different from importing soybeans
China’s established model is to import whole soybeans—particularly from Brazil and the United States—and crush them domestically into meal and oil. Buying finished meal from Argentina therefore adds a route, but competes with China’s own crushers and the local processing industry. Import approval in 2019 did not by itself create regular trade: price, logistics, inspection results, and the economics of domestic crushing still matter.
#1 Best Overall
- High Protein Animal Feed: Packed with essential amino acids; ideal for chickens, goats, pigs, and other livestock requiring a plant-based protein source
- Non-GMO Plant-Based Power: Derived from high-quality soybeans; great for custom feed blends or trial use in backyard flocks and small farms
- Supports Growth and Production: Helps promote muscle development, feather quality, and consistent egg-laying cycles in poultry
- Supports Growth and Production: Helps promote muscle development, feather quality, and consistent egg-laying cycles in poultry
- Pure Soybean Meal Only: Finely ground and free from salt, preservatives, or additives; safe for storage and easy to mix with other feed components
Argentina has substantial export capacity. USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service estimated Argentine soymeal exports at 31.1 million metric tons for marketing year 2024/25 and forecast 29.5 million metric tons for MY2025/26 in its 2025 update. These are national export estimates and a forecast, not volumes sold to China. USDA FAS, Argentina Oilseeds and Products Update
The first cargo cleared customs—but scale remains unproven
In November 2025, Reuters reported that a 30,000-metric-ton cargo aboard the vessel Sumatra had departed Argentina in September, reached Nansha in Guangdong in late October, and cleared Chinese customs. Mysteel described the meal as good quality and highly competitive. AgRadar Consulting founder Johnny Xiang said the clearance confirmed that a new route had opened, while adding that the cargo had little effect on domestic supply and that future buying would depend on quality and favorable prices. Reuters also reported a separate 30,000-metric-ton deal at $345 per metric ton including freight, scheduled for September–October 2025 shipment. That report said Argentine meal was priced below domestic meal and that Argentina’s soymeal export tax had been reduced to 24.5% from 31% at the time. USDA FAS also described China as buying Argentine soymeal, including at least one cargo originally intended for Vietnam that was rerouted to China, and relayed market reports of five additional cargoes booked. The agency characterized the activity as a test of logistics and profitability. Those market reports should not be treated as official customs totals or independently verified cargo counts.

What determines whether the route grows
A cargo can prove that a shipment is possible without proving that repeated imports make sense. For Argentine meal to become a durable part of China’s feed supply, buyers must weigh several factors together:
- Delivered cost: Compare the price including freight with locally produced meal and meal made from imported soybeans. The reported 2025 prices are individual deal snapshots, not a continuing price series.
- Policy costs: Export taxes and trade rules affect Argentine competitiveness, while tariffs and trade tensions can change the relative appeal of other sources.
- Inspection and quality: Import checks and the quality of the meal influence whether buyers can repeat orders.
- Shipping and availability: Shipment timing, logistics, and the ability to secure cargoes at the required scale all matter.
- China’s crushing economics: Domestic processing capacity, meal demand, inventories, and crushing margins determine whether importing finished meal is preferable to crushing beans at home.
Why the 2026 backdrop is not proof of continued Argentine meal imports
Reuters’ September 30, 2026 market report said Chinese private processors had covered much of their needs through the Lunar New Year with supplies from Brazil and Argentina and state reserves. It also described weak feed demand, negative crushing margins, high stocks, and a continuing additional 10% tariff on U.S. soybeans. Reuters reported that soybeans were omitted from proposed U.S. tariff relief after a Washington summit. These developments concern soybean imports and market conditions; they do not establish how much Argentine soymeal China imported in 2026. Reuters, September 30, 2026, via MarketScreener

- HIGH PROTEIN CONTENT: Provides 47% protein to support healthy growth and development in livestock and wildlife.
- VERSATILE FEED: Suitable for a wide range of animals, including deer, turkey, cattle, hogs, and other wildlife.
- CONVENIENT SIZE: Comes in a 10 lb. bag, making it easy to store, handle, and distribute as needed.
- ATTRACTS WILDLIFE: An excellent feed and attractant for hunting, helping to draw deer and other game to your desired location.
- NUTRIENT-RICH SUPPLEMENT: Can be used as a standalone feed or mixed with other feeds to boost overall protein intake for animals.
The distinction matters: trade tension may encourage buyers to consider alternatives, but weak feed demand and unprofitable crushing can constrain buying overall. The 2025 test showed that a cargo could arrive and clear customs; whether the route grows depends on changing commercial conditions, not on the test alone.
