Aviation Week later reported that Avolon completed the acquisition for a reported $532 million. China Southern’s July 2026 operating data then recorded two B787-8 dispositions that month, but does not establish when each of the ten aircraft was physically transferred.
What China Southern announced in 2024
On November 19, 2024, China Southern Airlines Company Limited issued a request for proposal saying it was considering selling ten self-owned Boeing 787-8 aircraft and two spare GEnx-1B70/P2 engines to a qualified purchaser. The notice described a proposed transaction, not a completed sale. Read China Southern’s notice.
The proposal concerned the airline’s 787-8 aircraft, not every Boeing 787 in its fleet. Boeing said in 2018 that China Southern operated ten 787-8s and eight 787-9s. The 787-9 is a separate variant and was not included in the sale scope described in the 2024 notice. Boeing’s 2018 account provides historical fleet context; it is not a current route or fleet inventory.
Who bought the aircraft, and what was the reported value?
Aviation Week reported on March 5, 2026, that Bohai Leasing said its subsidiary Avolon had completed the acquisition of the ten aircraft and two spare engines for $532 million. That is the reported transaction value, attributed by Aviation Week to Bohai Leasing; it should not be read as an independently verified valuation of the aircraft alone, since the reported package also included the engines. What the July 2026 fleet data does—and does not—show
China Southern’s July 2026 operating announcement recorded two B787-8 aircraft disposed of during that month. It also listed 38 Boeing 787-series aircraft in the group’s fleet at July month-end. The 38 figure covers the 787 series, not just the 787-8 variant. The monthly data does not provide an aircraft-by-aircraft transfer schedule, so it cannot establish that all ten had been physically delivered or removed from operations by the end of July. The figures appear in China Southern’s announcement as reproduced by FinancialFilings.
Two broader fleet totals use different dates and definitions. China Southern’s July operating data counted 974 commercial aircraft at month-end. Separately, the parent company’s profile gave a group-wide total of 1,007 aircraft as of June 2026, including passenger aircraft, cargo aircraft and helicopters. Those figures describe different scopes and dates and should not be treated as directly comparable. China Southern Air Holding’s company profile.

Why is China Southern selling its 787-8s?
The 2024 notice does not state why China Southern was considering the sale. The available announcement establishes the proposed sale scope, but not the airline’s motive. It would be speculation to attribute the decision to aircraft age, operating economics, post-pandemic recovery or fleet simplification without a sourced statement.

Historical context for the 787-8 fleet
Boeing’s December 2018 release described China Southern as a 787 launch customer and the first Chinese airline to operate the aircraft. It said China Southern first ordered ten 787-8s in 2005 and ordered 787-9s in 2016. The release also named London and Rome, Vancouver, and Perth, Auckland and Christchurch among destinations historically served nonstop from Guangzhou on the 787 family.
