China Construction Bank vs. Bank of China: Key Differences for Investors

CCB reported larger assets and higher 2025 net profit; BOC reported a lower NPL ratio and a 27.99% overseas profit share. Neither result alone determines which stock offers better value.

On their own reported 2025 figures, China Construction Bank (CCB) was larger and earned more than Bank of China (BOC), while BOC reported a lower non-performing loan ratio and a larger disclosed share of profit from overseas operations. Both reported a 30% full-year payout ratio. Those results explain how the banks differ; they do not show which stock is cheaper or the better investment.

How do CCB and BOC compare on scale and earnings?

CCB reported group assets of RMB45.63 trillion at the end of 2025 and net profit of RMB339.79 billion for the year. BOC reported group assets above RMB38 trillion and net profit of RMB257.9 billion. These are figures reported by each bank, not independently harmonized statistics, so accounting and group-structure differences may affect direct comparisons.

On those reported totals, CCB had the larger balance sheet and higher net profit. Scale and profit are useful starting points, but neither establishes how much an investor pays for the earnings or what future performance will be.

What do the reported credit-quality figures show?

At year-end 2025, BOC reported a non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of 1.23%, compared with CCB’s reported 1.31%. The lower headline ratio at BOC is one data point, not proof that its overall credit risk was lower. Loan mix, collateral, how problem loans are recognized, and the reserves held against them all matter.

CCB also reported a 233.15% provision coverage ratio. That figure provides additional context about its reported loan-loss provisions relative to NPLs, but it does not by itself settle which bank has the stronger loan book. A fuller comparison would examine asset-quality definitions and trends, loan exposures, and provisioning at both banks.

What do profitability and capital figures add?

CCB reported average return on equity of 10.04% for 2025, a capital adequacy ratio of 19.69%, and a core Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio of 14.63%. These are useful indicators of profitability and capital under the bank’s reporting framework. They do not, on their own, establish relative attractiveness: an investor would also need comparable figures for BOC, their definitions and trends, and the prices of the relevant shares.

How do their dividends compare?

Both banks reported a 30% full-year payout ratio for 2025. CCB reported a cash dividend of RMB3.887 per 10 shares, while BOC reported RMB2.263 per 10 shares. The per-10-share amounts are not a direct measure of which investment pays more: share class, market price, tax treatment, and currency conventions must be considered.

A payout ratio is also not a dividend yield. To estimate yield, an investor needs the relevant share’s dividend amount and current market price, using consistent share-class and currency conventions. The 2025 payout ratios describe that year; they are not promises of future dividends.

How do their domestic and international businesses differ?

CCB: a large domestic lending base with cross-border activity

CCB reported net loans of RMB26.93 trillion and highlighted lending related to domestic housing, companies, manufacturing, and strategic industries. It also reported RMB6.50 trillion in cross-border settlements. Its overseas commercial banking institutions and comprehensive operating subsidiaries together recorded net profit of RMB21.488 billion, up 19.65% in 2025.

BOC: a prominent international and foreign-exchange profile

BOC described its global banking footprint and foreign-exchange and cross-border services. It reported that overseas commercial and comprehensive operating companies contributed 27.99% of group profit in 2025, and highlighted cross-border settlement and the international use of the renminbi.

The overseas figures use different measures: BOC reported a share of group profit, while CCB reported a combined overseas-operations profit amount and growth rate. They cannot support a direct ranking of international exposure or performance. The banks’ descriptions indicate strategic differences, not proof of future growth or superior returns.

What else should investors check before choosing between the stocks?

These 2025 disclosures do not provide a current relative-value conclusion. A stock comparison needs the specific share class and listing being considered, current market prices, and valuation measures calculated on a consistent basis. Dividend yield also depends on the share price, not only on payout ratios or cash dividends per 10 shares.

Both banks had published 2026 interim reports by October 7, 2026, but the contents of those reports are not summarized in the investor-relations listings cited here. The latest available figures in this comparison therefore remain their reported 2025 results; investors should review the interim financial statements for updated earnings, asset quality, capital, and business trends.

Relevant report listings: CCB investor relations, listing its 2026 half-year report on August 28, 2026; BOC investor relations, listing its 2026 interim reports.

Both banks are exposed to the Chinese credit cycle, interest-rate and margin pressure, regulatory and policy priorities, and state-directed capital allocation. The figures cited here do not establish the current direction or relative magnitude of those risks. Accounting, segment definitions, and group structure can also complicate comparisons.
