Traders told the news agency the purchases were meant to help meet a pledge made to President Donald Trump, even though U.S. Gulf Coast offers were higher than comparable Brazilian offers. The reported buys show activity toward the pledge; they do not establish the final price paid or guarantee future purchases.
What China bought—and what the report establishes
Reuters reported on November 17, 2025, that China purchased at least 14 cargoes of U.S. soybeans, its largest reported purchase since at least January. The report described the buying as the most significant since the October meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Two Asia-based traders told Reuters that China was buying to meet pledges made in Washington at the Busan, South Korea, trade summit.
The Reuters event page is not accessible here, so the reported cargo count and trader explanation should be understood as Reuters reporting available in its headline and lead excerpt, not as independently verified shipment records. The available account does not state exact deal prices or shipment terms. The Reddit reproduction that carried the excerpt links to Reuters and is not a separate confirmation. Reuters
Why buy U.S. soybeans if Brazilian offers were lower?
The traders’ explanation was that China was seeking to meet the pledge. That is a reported explanation, not proof of every buyer’s commercial calculation or political motive. China’s sourcing decisions also unfolded amid a shift toward Brazil and Argentina, which offered alternative supplies and helped diversify its sources.

- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
An earlier Reuters market report carried in LSEG’s Inside Commodities on November 5, 2025, gave a price comparison for December shipment: Brazilian beans were offered at a premium of $2.25–$2.30 per bushel over the January Chicago Board of Trade contract, while U.S. Gulf Coast beans were offered at a $2.40 premium. On that basis comparison, the U.S. offer was about 10–15 cents per bushel higher.
Those figures compare offers relative to a futures benchmark; they are not a complete delivered-cost comparison and do not establish the invoice price for the November 17 cargoes. Freight, tariffs, quality, shipment timing, and contract terms can affect the total cost, and the available comparison does not resolve which origin had the lowest landed cost. What the U.S. pledge called for
The White House said China would buy at least 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans in the final two months of 2025, followed by at least 25 million metric tons annually for the next three years. These are targets attributed to the White House, not a schedule jointly published by Washington and Beijing. Reuters/LSEG reported on November 5 that Beijing had not confirmed those specific figures at that time. The White House
The broader context is a volatile trade relationship. The Associated Press reported that Beijing had paused U.S. soybean purchases during the dispute and agreed to resume buying after the Trump-Xi meeting in South Korea. A later AP report noted uncertainty about whether changing U.S. tariff policy could weaken the longer-term commitment. A reported purchase is evidence of a transaction, not proof that the trade truce or later targets are secure. Associated Press

How the reported purchases compare with later milestones
Early and later accounts describe different points in time and should not be treated as conflicting totals:
| Reporting date | What was reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| November 14, 2025 | AP said available USDA data showed two post-summit Chinese purchases totaling 332,000 metric tons. | An early data snapshot, well below the 12-million-ton target; AP noted that official sales data lagged. |
| January 2026 | AP reported that China had fulfilled the initial 12-million-ton commitment, citing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s announcement and later USDA data. | A later milestone report, not evidence that the subsequent annual targets had been met. |
In AP’s account of the initial milestone, Bessent said, “They did everything they said they were going to do.” That is his assessment of the initial commitment, not independent confirmation of future annual purchases. Associated Press

Why Brazil matters to China’s sourcing
China had shifted much of its soybean sourcing to Brazil and Argentina, seeking lower prices and a broader supplier base. AP, citing World Bank data, reported that Brazil supplied more than 70% of Chinese soybean imports in the prior year it discussed, while the U.S. supplied 21%. Those figures provide context for the competition between origins; they do not show the share for every later period. Associated Press
Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
What this episode does—and does not—show
- It shows: Reuters reported a substantial U.S. soybean purchase on November 17, 2025, and traders attributed the buying to efforts to meet the pledge.
- It does not show: the final price China paid for those cargoes, that U.S. beans were cheaper overall after delivery costs, or that every purchase was made for political rather than commercial reasons.
- It does not settle: whether China will meet later annual targets or whether changing tariff policy will affect trade between the countries.
