Chime is a mobile-first financial technology company, not a bank. Its checking and savings services are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC. The account may suit people who want app-based money management, early-pay availability, and cash access through a broad ATM network; its value depends on direct-deposit eligibility, savings tier, local cash-deposit options, and comfort with a partner-bank setup.
Is Chime a real bank?
No. Chime says, “Chime is not a bank.” The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A. provides the banking services, and both are Members FDIC. Which partner handles a particular account is identified in the applicable account materials. Chime’s FAQ explains the arrangement.

Chime itself is not FDIC-insured. Eligible deposits may receive pass-through FDIC insurance through the partner bank, subject to the applicable requirements for coverage. The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category; that limit is not a separate $250,000 allowance for every Chime account. For details and conditions, see Chime’s disclosures.

What does a Chime account include?
Checking and debit card
Chime Checking is managed through the app and comes with a Visa debit card. The FAQ says members can manage card controls, including blocking a card, and request a replacement in the app. Chime’s mobile-first model can be convenient if you are comfortable handling routine account tasks digitally; the cited materials do not establish how well support resolves problems.

Savings
Chime Savings requires eligibility for Chime Checking. The rates below are variable APYs listed in Chime’s disclosure as effective July 13, 2026; the Prime rate also requires eligible Prime status and a balance of at least $0.01.
| Chime Savings tier | APY | Qualification note |
|---|---|---|
| Prime | 3.75% | Requires eligible Prime status and at least $0.01 in the account. |
| Plus | 2.75% | Tier-dependent; terms may apply. |
| Standard | 0.75% | Standard tier. |
These are Chime-published rates, not fixed returns. Check the current disclosure and your eligibility before opening or relying on an account; a higher advertised tier does not necessarily apply to every member.

How do you add or withdraw cash?
Deposits
Chime describes linked-bank transfers, mobile check deposits, and cash deposits as ways to add money. Its FAQ says cash deposits at Walgreens are free at more than 7,900 locations, while other participating retailers—including Walmart, CVS, and 7-Eleven—may charge. Location availability and retailer fees can change, so check the current options in the app or Chime FAQ before making a trip. If you regularly handle cash, the locations and fees near you are a material part of the account’s value.

Chime’s FAQ reports more than 47,000 fee-free in-network ATMs. That is a company-reported network count, not a guarantee that an ATM will be nearby or available. Out-of-network ATM fees may apply, so check the locator and applicable terms for your area.

What is SpotMe?
SpotMe is an optional feature for eligible members that can cover certain debit-card transactions beyond the available balance without an overdraft fee. Chime’s disclosure, accessed September 27, 2026, says a member needs at least $200 in qualifying monthly direct deposits and an activated eligible physical card. Eligible members start with a combined limit of up to $20; later limits vary based on factors including deposit history, frequency and amount, spending, and other risk criteria. Approval and a larger limit are not guaranteed.
SpotMe is not a general-purpose overdraft line. ACH transfers, Pay Anyone transfers, and Chime Checkbook transactions are excluded, and ATM or retailer charges can still apply. Review the current SpotMe terms to understand which transactions qualify.

Does Chime really pay you two days early?
Chime says direct deposits may arrive up to two days before the scheduled payday. “May” matters: timing depends on when the employer or other payer sends the payment file. It is not a guaranteed two-day advance or a substitute for funds that have not yet been transmitted. Chime explains the condition in its disclosures.

What should you weigh before choosing Chime?
- Cash habits: Free Walgreens deposits and a large reported ATM network may help, but retailer charges and out-of-network fees matter if nearby options are limited.
- Direct deposit: Early-pay timing is contingent on the payer’s file, while SpotMe eligibility requires qualifying deposits. Consider whether your income setup meets the current terms.
- Savings yield: The stated APY varies by tier and is not a universal rate. Compare the rate you can actually qualify for, not only the highest tier.
- Account structure: Chime is not the bank, and pass-through insurance has conditions. Read the partner-bank and FDIC disclosures if the structure is important to you.
- Service needs: Chime lists 24/7 support through its stated channels, but that availability claim does not establish resolution quality or satisfaction. The cited materials do not provide independent service-outcome comparisons.
Chime’s disclosures also report an Experian representative study from September 2025: among people who made a first purchase with Credit Builder (an earlier version of Chime Card) between April and August 2024, the top 10% of a defined member sample saw a 71-point increase after approximately eight months, while the average across all study participants was 28 points. Chime says improvement is not guaranteed. These study figures describe that sample and should not be treated as an expected result for a new member.
