Hamm and Ego Nwodim play business-news anchors who translate financial headlines into the everyday costs familiar to viewers living paycheck to paycheck. The jokes landed amid intense tariff-related economic news, but the sketch is comedy—not evidence of current tariff rules or what caused any particular price to change.
What is “Check to Check Business News”?
NBC lists “Check to Check Business News” as a clip from the April 12, 2025 SNL episode hosted by Jon Hamm. In the sketch, Hamm and Ego Nwodim present business news for “regular folk living paycheck to paycheck,” as The Guardian describes the premise.
Instead of leaving financial headlines at the level of markets and abstract indicators, the anchors make them relatable through familiar household expenses. The Los Angeles Times and The Guardian both describe the sketch’s focus on rising everyday costs.
How does the sketch turn business news into household jokes?
The comedy’s central contrast is between the language of business coverage and the small purchases that matter in a tight household budget. A market headline may sound remote; the price of a candy bar or a box of groceries is immediate.

The Guardian also describes a correspondent offering mock alternatives to imported products, using the news cycle as material for jokes about everyday shopping.
Why were tariffs part of the episode’s context?
The episode aired during intense tariff-related economic news in April 2025. The Atlantic and The Guardian place the sketch within that moment, when tariffs and the economy were prominent topics in public discussion. That context helps explain the subject matter, but it does not establish the legal status or rates of any tariff today, or prove that a tariff caused a specific consumer price to rise.
