If you’re looking for a fast car on a budget, the right choice depends on what “fast” means to you. The 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata and Toyota GR86 delivered the quickest 0–60 times among the model-year cars with comparable Edmunds test figures here; the Ford Mustang EcoBoost posted quicker results in separate tests, but those varied by test car and setup. A 2024 model-year starting MSRP is not today’s used-car price, so use these figures to compare the original lineup—not to predict what a particular car costs in 2026.
What counts as a cheap, fast car?
“Cheap” needs a budget, and “fast” can mean either quick acceleration or an engaging drive. A low, light roadster may be enjoyable on a winding road without matching a more powerful coupe in a straight-line launch. A practical sedan or hatchback may make more sense if you need passenger and cargo space.
The prices below are published starting prices for 2024 models where the source identifies the model year. Edmunds says its 2024 sports-car guide prices include destination charges. These are not current used asking prices, and a starting price does not describe every trim or option. The sources use different page methods, so compare a specific year, trim, and fee treatment before using a number in your budget.
2024 cars to compare
| Car | Published starting price | Power and tested 0–60 mph | Layout and transmission | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata | $30,170; Edmunds, destination included | 181 hp; 6.4 seconds in Edmunds testing | Two-seat, rear-wheel-drive convertible; transmission details not stated here | For nimble handling and open-top driving. Its two-seat cabin and small trunk limit utility. |
| 2024 Toyota GR86 | $30,435; Edmunds, destination included | 228 hp; 6.0 seconds in Edmunds testing | Rear-wheel-drive coupe; transmission details not stated here | For drivers who want a coupe, more trunk space, and occasional rear seats. The back seats are cramped. |
| 2024 Honda Civic Si | $31,045; Edmunds, destination included | 200 hp; 7.2 seconds in Edmunds testing | Front-wheel drive; six-speed manual | For a four-door, engaging sport sedan with passenger and trunk utility, rather than the quickest launch in this comparison. |
| 2024 Subaru WRX | $28,200; Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 list | 271 hp is listed in Edmunds’ current roundup, which covers multiple model years; a comparable 2024 0–60 test is not stated here | Standard all-wheel drive; manual availability highlighted by Edmunds | A versatile compact sedan. KBB lists 22 mpg combined for the 2024 model. |
| 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost | $32,515 in Edmunds’ current roundup; the roundup figure is not established here as a 2024-only price | 315 hp; Car and Driver measured 4.5 seconds to 60 mph in its test car; Edmunds recorded 5.6 seconds with an EcoBoost Performance Package | Rear-wheel-drive coupe; Car and Driver describes the 2024 EcoBoost with a 10-speed automatic | For stronger straight-line acceleration. Test results differ, so treat them as results for those specific test cars, not a guaranteed time for every car. |
| Volkswagen Golf GTI | $33,190 in Edmunds’ current roundup; not established here as a 2024-only price | 241 hp in the roundup; a comparable 2024 0–60 test is not stated here | Practical hatchback; transmission details not stated here | For hatchback utility alongside a sporty powertrain. |
| Hyundai Elantra N | $34,850 in Edmunds’ current roundup; not established here as a 2024-only price | 276 hp in the roundup; a comparable 2024 0–60 test is not stated here | Compact sedan; transmission details not stated here | For a more raucous compact-sedan character. |

Which one fits your budget and driving?
Choose the Miata for a light, open-air sports car
The Miata’s appeal is its two-seat convertible format and nimble handling, not a claim to lead every acceleration contest. Edmunds’ 6.4-second test result makes it slower to 60 than the GR86 in that guide, while its compact cabin and trunk are meaningful compromises if you regularly carry passengers or luggage.
Choose the GR86 for a coupe with occasional rear seats
The GR86 combines a 228-hp flat-four and rear-wheel drive with a 6.0-second Edmunds 0–60 result. It has more trunk room and two rear seats compared with the Miata, but the rear seats are cramped. Edmunds describes the mechanically related Subaru BRZ as having a slightly softer suspension tune and a more comfortable long-drive character; no BRZ price or test time is established in the figures above.
Choose the Civic Si if daily practicality matters more than launch speed
The Si’s four doors, passenger space, and trunk make it a practical sport-sedan option. Its 200-hp engine, front-wheel drive, and six-speed manual suit drivers who want an engaging manual-transmission car, but Edmunds’ 7.2-second result trails the Miata and GR86 tests cited here.

Consider the WRX when all-wheel drive is a priority
The WRX is the all-wheel-drive choice in this group, and Edmunds highlights manual availability. Be especially careful with price comparisons: Kelley Blue Book lists a $28,200 2024 starting price and 22 mpg combined, while Edmunds’ current roundup lists $33,855 and 271 hp in a page context spanning multiple model years. Those numbers should not be combined into a single 2024 trim-and-price claim without confirming the exact model year, trim, and fees.

Choose the Mustang EcoBoost for straight-line acceleration
The Mustang’s 315-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter engine gives it the highest stated horsepower among the specific cars above. Its published 0–60 figures show why a test time needs its configuration attached: Car and Driver recorded 4.5 seconds with its test car, while Edmunds recorded 5.6 seconds with an EcoBoost equipped with the Performance Package. Neither result is a universal guarantee for every EcoBoost.
Compare the GTI and Elantra N by body style and character
The Golf GTI’s hatchback body is the more utility-oriented choice described in Edmunds’ roundup; the Elantra N is characterized there as the more raucous compact sedan. The roundup’s $33,190 GTI and $34,850 Elantra N figures are not confirmed here as 2024-only prices, so don’t treat them as 2024 MSRP without checking a model-year-specific listing.

How to apply 2024 prices to a used-car search in 2026
Use the original starting MSRP as context, not a valuation. A used example’s asking price depends on the specific car and listing; the evidence here does not establish current transaction prices, local inventory, or what any particular example should cost. Before deciding whether a listing is affordable, compare its model year, trim, options, mileage, and condition, then account for the costs of owning and registering it.
The Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to research models, options, repair records, safety tests, and mileage, and to budget for registration, insurance, gas, and maintenance. Its guidance also says: “A vehicle history report is not a substitute for an independent vehicle inspection.” Read the FTC’s used-car buying guide for its recommendations.
Used-car checks before you commit
- For a dealer sale, read the Buyer’s Guide to see whether the car is sold “as is” or with a warranty.
- Request a vehicle-history report and arrange an independent inspection by a mechanic.
- Check the car’s options, repair records, safety information, mileage, and condition against the listing.
- Budget for registration, insurance, fuel, and maintenance rather than comparing the asking price with MSRP alone.
An OBD-II scanner can be an optional screening aid, but it cannot certify a car’s condition. Coverage varies by vehicle, market, module, protocol, and software version; a scan does not replace a professional inspection, vehicle-history research, a lift inspection, or a road test. The scanner guide from iCarsoft explains these limits in its OBD-II scanner guide. No particular scanner’s compatibility with the cars in this article is established here.
