ChatGPT now includes a built-in shopping assistant called Shopping Research. It can ask what you need, compare products and create a buyer’s guide; it is not a separate shopping app, and most purchases still go through a retailer’s website or app. The feature is currently live in the United States, though what appears can vary by interface and merchant.
What ChatGPT’s shopping assistant does
Shopping Research is designed for decisions with several requirements or meaningful trade-offs. Instead of returning only a quick list, it can ask follow-up questions, show products as it finds them, let you refine the shortlist and produce recommendations with reasons, trade-offs and merchant links. OpenAI describes the workflow in its Shopping Research help guide.
There is also a lighter form of shopping help: a regular shopping-oriented prompt may produce product cards with images, details, prices, review information and retailer links. OpenAI’s guide to shopping results in ChatGPT Search describes those cards.

OpenAI announced Shopping Research on November 24, 2025. On March 24, 2026, it announced richer visual discovery and product comparisons. The later update matters: the feature has developed beyond its launch description. See OpenAI’s launch announcement and its March 2026 product-discovery update.

How to start a Shopping Research session
- Ask a shopping question. Describe what you are considering and the decision you need help with. ChatGPT may suggest Shopping Research when it recognizes a suitable request.
- Choose Research if it appears. You can also select products already shown in the conversation and choose Research to explore or compare them.
- Answer the follow-up questions. Add any constraints or priorities that the initial prompt missed.
- Refine the results. Ask it to remove products, change the budget, compare a smaller set or look for alternatives.
- Review the guide, then open the merchant page. Use the guide to narrow your options; confirm purchase details with the retailer before paying.
The interface can vary by platform and rollout, so a particular button may not appear for every user. OpenAI’s original November 2025 announcement also described starting from the (+) menu, but its current help page emphasizes shopping prompts and the Research option on products rather than promising one universal path.
How to get more useful comparisons
A vague request such as “What’s the best vacuum?” leaves the assistant to guess what matters. Give it the constraints you would use to make the decision yourself:
- Product and use: What are you buying, and how will you use it?
- Budget: State a ceiling and clarify whether it includes accessories, delivery or other costs.
- Must-haves: Include dimensions, capacity, compatibility or required features.
- Preferences and exclusions: Name brands, materials, styles or product types you prefer or want to rule out.
- Timing and condition: Say when you need delivery and whether used or refurbished items are acceptable.
- Ownership costs: Ask about warranties, repairs, subscriptions, replacement parts and return policies when they matter.
For example: “Find a quiet cordless stick vacuum for a 600-square-foot apartment. Keep the total price under $300, prioritize low noise and easy storage, and exclude models that require a subscription. Compare battery life, filtration, warranty and current retailer prices.”

Once you have results, make the next request specific: “Remove anything over $250 before tax,” “Show only models with replaceable batteries,” or “Prioritize the best warranty, not the lowest price.” For a shorter shortlist, ask for a side-by-side comparison of the products you are actually considering.

What the buyer’s guide can tell you
OpenAI says a guide may explain which product attributes matter, identify a small set of picks, say why each fits your needs, and lay out strengths, trade-offs and merchant links. It may include comparisons of price, size and features as well as additional products that match your criteria. The useful part is not simply a “best” label: it is the explanation of how each option fits—or misses—the requirements you gave.
Ask it to distinguish manufacturer specifications from review-based observations, and to verify exact model numbers before comparing similar-looking listings. That is particularly useful for products sold in several generations, sizes, storage capacities, bundles or regional variants.

Where the information comes from—and what can be missing
OpenAI says Shopping Research can draw on merchant product data supplied through the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), public product information and other retail sources. Product results may also use structured metadata from first- and third-party providers, product descriptions and other third-party content. Merchant feeds can help keep catalog details, prices, availability and images current; OpenAI’s merchant information says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are integrated.
That does not mean ChatGPT checks every retailer or lists every available product. Some retailers block automated access, so the feature may skip a source or rely on alternatives. A missing listing is not proof that a retailer does not sell the product.

OpenAI says ordinary product results are not ads and are not influenced by its partnerships. That is a company statement about how results are selected, not a guarantee that results are comprehensive or objectively best. Rankings can reflect availability, price, quality, whether a merchant is the maker or primary seller, product and merchant metadata, and the context of your prompt. Memory, personalization and privacy
Shopping Research may use ChatGPT memory to tailor suggestions—for example, drawing on a known interest when recommending a laptop. Memory can make results more relevant, but it can also carry assumptions from an earlier conversation into a new purchase. State your important requirements in the current prompt, especially if you are shopping for someone else.
- Memory on: Recommendations may reflect preferences ChatGPT has retained.
- Memory off: A one-off request may be less personalized.
- Control: OpenAI says memory can be turned off or cleared in ChatGPT’s personalization settings.

Sometimes, but not universally. OpenAI’s shopping-results help page says some eligible products and merchants may offer an Instant Checkout option. Its merchant page describes a broader shift away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience toward product discovery in ChatGPT and checkout on merchant-owned websites or apps. Expect to follow a retailer link for many purchases; an in-chat option depends on the specific product and merchant.

In practice, the usual path is to find products, compare them, open a retailer’s page and complete the purchase there. That makes the retailer’s listing—not the ChatGPT card—the place to confirm the offer and the terms that apply.
What to verify before spending money
Product cards and recommendations are useful for building a shortlist, but the details can be wrong, stale or simplified. OpenAI cautions that product titles and descriptions may be simplified or generated from third-party information; labels such as “Budget-friendly” or “Most popular” are generated by ChatGPT, not guarantees. Review summaries are model-generated from public reviews, and OpenAI does not verify the reviews or ratings.
- Exact product: Match the model number, generation, size, capacity, color and bundle on the manufacturer’s or retailer’s page.
- Total cost: Confirm the price at checkout, including required memberships, coupons, shipping, taxes, fees and accessories. A displayed price may not be the lowest and can lag a retailer’s changes.
- Availability and delivery: Check that the item is in stock and that the delivery estimate works for you.
- Seller and condition: On marketplaces, confirm who is selling the item and whether it is new, open-box, used or refurbished.
- Returns and ownership terms: Read the return window, restocking fees, warranty coverage, subscription requirements and availability of replacement parts.
- Evidence behind claims: For compatibility, safety, medical or regulatory claims, verify with the manufacturer or an appropriate specialist source. For expensive products, check independent testing and whether review complaints refer to the exact model.
If the wrong variant appears, ask: “Verify the exact model numbers and separate every generation, size, storage capacity, color, bundle and refurbished listing before comparing.” If a retailer is missing, name it explicitly and still check its site; limited automated access can explain an omission. If a review summary seems too reassuring, ask for recurring negative themes separately and for the evidence behind them.
When Shopping Research is—and is not—a good fit
It is most useful when you are unsure which specifications matter, several options could work, or your priorities are unusual enough that a simple “best product” list is not helpful. It can translate specifications into practical differences, find alternatives and organize a complicated decision in plain language.

Availability and plan access
As of August 16, 2026, OpenAI’s merchant page says shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the United States and that broader regional expansion is planned. OpenAI’s November 2025 and March 2026 announcements described rollout to logged-in users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans. Those announcements do not establish that every capability or usage level is unlimited, or that the same interface is available everywhere. Check ChatGPT for the feature available to your account and region rather than assuming a separate shopping app or a paid plan is required.
