Contract workers serving American Airlines at Charlotte Douglas International Airport began a planned 24-hour strike on Monday, November 25, 2024, during Thanksgiving travel week. The walkout was called over pay and respect on the job, according to the union; American said it did not expect significant flight disruption.
Who went on strike at Charlotte airport?
Employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services walked off the job. The companies provide services for American Airlines at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). Their reported duties included cleaning aircraft cabins, removing trash and escorting passengers who use wheelchairs. The employees were contractors, not employees of the city’s aviation department, Charlotte airport officials said.
The distinction identifies the workers’ employers: the city’s airport department was not their employer. The union said employees had voted to authorize the work stoppage the previous Friday. The action was expected to last 24 hours. The Associated Press reported on the strike and union’s announcement; WCNC also reported on the planned walkout.
Why were workers demanding better pay?
SEIU framed the campaign as a demand for “an end to poverty wages and respect on the job during the holiday travel season.” That is the union’s characterization of the workers’ conditions and goals.

AP reported that union officials said most workers earned between $12.50 and $19 per hour in 2024. That range was attributed to the union, not presented as an independently audited wage schedule. At a rally, the Rev. Glencie Rhedrick of the Charlotte Clergy Coalition for Justice said workers should earn $22 to $25 per hour; that was an advocacy demand, not a reported pay scale. Cabin cleaner Priscilla Hoyle, an ABM employee, told AP at the rally: “We cannot live on the wages that we are being paid.” AP’s account includes the attributed wage figures and rally remarks.
Did the strike disrupt American Airlines flights?
American said it did not expect “any significant disruption” to its flights that week. AP, citing FlightAware data, reported that by midafternoon on November 25 more than 30 American flights at CLT—about 4%—were delayed. AP described that number as not out of the ordinary. The reporting does not establish that the strike caused those delays, so the delay count should not be treated as evidence of strike-related disruption. AP reported the airline’s forecast and the delay data.

Charlotte airport officials said they were monitoring the situation and working with airport partners to ensure terminal operations were not affected. They also clarified that the striking workers were not city aviation department employees. The airport’s newsroom provides the city aviation department’s public updates.
How busy was Charlotte airport expected to be?
Airport officials estimated that 1.02 million passengers would depart CLT from the Thursday before Thanksgiving through the Monday after the holiday in 2024. That was a forecast for the period, not a final passenger count. The large expected travel volume explains why a one-day labor action drew attention, but it does not show that the strike changed flight operations or passenger totals. AP reported the airport’s passenger estimate.

What is known about the outcome?
The available reporting describes the planned 24-hour action and the parties’ statements at the time. It does not establish a final settlement of the wage demands, a realized Thanksgiving passenger total, or the status of any later labor action. The 2024 walkout should therefore be understood as a specific past event, not evidence that a strike is currently underway.
