Channel 5’s operating profit for the year ended 31 December 2024 was £21 million, down from £112.4 million in 2023. That is a fall of about 81%, not two-thirds as the headline suggests. Much of the gap is a comparison effect: the 2023 figure included an £80.9 million payment from Sky Media after an advertising-sales underpayment.
Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited, the company behind the broadcaster branded as 5, is owned by Paramount, which merged with Skydance in 2025. The “Skydance” label in the headline refers to that wider group rather than to a separate UK company.
The headline figures and what each one measures
The reported numbers come from two different accounting measures, and they should not be swapped. The 81% fall is an operating-profit comparison. The £30.6 million pre-tax profit is a separate line, reported by City A.M. for 2024, and sits after finance items and before tax.

Why the year-on-year fall overstates the decline
Deadline reported that the 2023 comparison included an £80.9 million payment from Sky Media, made after an underpayment on advertising sales. A one-off receipt of that size inflates the base year, so the headline percentage describes the gap between an unusually strong year and an ordinary one rather than a steady slide.
Removing the payment from the 2023 figure leaves roughly £31.5 million. On that basis, 2024’s £21 million would be about a third lower, not 81% lower. This is our simple subtraction from the reported figures, not a restated number from the accounts, and it assumes the payment sat entirely within operating profit as reported. The sources do not say whether the 2024 figure contains any comparable one-off items, so the underlying trend cannot be stated with more precision than that.

Content spending rose to a three-year high
Deadline reported that Channel 5 spent £216.6 million on content in 2024, a three-year high. The company therefore kept investing in programming while its reported operating profit fell. The sources reviewed do not restate the earlier annual content figures, so the three-year claim is Deadline’s description rather than a series this article can reproduce.
Where streaming fits
Paramount says that 5’s streaming service was the fastest-growing public service broadcaster streaming service in the UK for the second consecutive year, based on 2025 growth. That is the company’s own description, published in its UK media hub. It is not an independently verified ranking, and it measures audience growth, not profit.

- They show lower reported operating profit in 2024, higher content spending, and a company that describes streaming growth as part of its audience strategy.
- They do not show that streaming investment caused the profit decline. No streaming-specific spending or profit contribution appears in the reviewed material.
- They do not establish the advertising revenue trend. City A.M.’s coverage describes the year as one affected by an advertising hit, but a verified breakdown of advertising income is not in the sources reviewed.
- They do not allow a ranking against other UK broadcasters. Comparisons should match measures and periods, such as operating profit against operating profit, and separate the Sky Media payment from ordinary trading.
