Update your mobile number in each bank’s records, then open every UPI app you use and follow its instructions to verify the new number and re-register if required. The number verified in a UPI app must match the number linked to your bank account for the account to be fetched, according to NPCI’s UPI FAQ.
What needs updating when you change your number?
There are two separate places to check: the mobile number recorded by each bank and the number verified in each UPI app. Updating one does not automatically confirm that the other has been updated. NPCI says the number linked to the bank account must match the number verified in the UPI app; otherwise, the account will not be fetched.

NPCI also says that a change in SIM, mobile number, or the PSP application can require UPI re-registration. The exact steps—and whether an existing UPI ID or PIN carries over—depend on the bank and app.
Update your bank records and verify the new number in each app
- Update the number with each bank. Use that bank’s current official process for every account you want to use with UPI. Banks may have different procedures; the official guidance reviewed does not establish one method, a universal processing time, or whether a branch visit is required.
- Keep the new number active. When an app performs mobile verification, use the SIM containing the number now linked to your bank account. NPCI’s BHIM information tells users to select the SIM with the mobile number registered with their bank.
- Check every UPI app you use. Open each app and follow its own instructions for a changed number or re-registration. Confirm that the intended bank account appears; do not assume the app will update automatically.
- Complete any setup the app requests. If asked, follow the app and bank’s process to link the account and set up a PIN. Do not assume you must create a new UPI ID or PIN—or that your old ones will always remain valid.
Will your UPI ID and PIN stay the same?
There is no universal carry-over rule in the official guidance. Bank instructions illustrate why you should follow the procedure for your own bank and app rather than assume a particular result.

These are bank-specific instructions, and the scenarios are not identical: changing the number recorded by the bank is different from changing only a SIM or handset. Other providers also distinguish between changes to a mobile number, device, and SIM serial number. For example, HSBC India’s SimplyPay guidance addresses those changes separately, while HDFC Bank’s UPI information describes mobile-number verification (SIM binding) as a security link between the registered number and device. Check your bank’s and app’s own current instructions.
What if the account does not appear or setup fails?
- Check that the bank has recorded the new number and that the SIM in the phone is the one carrying that number.
- Follow the app’s re-registration instructions, then check whether the intended bank account is available to link.
- If the number matches but the account still cannot be fetched, or the app keeps failing verification, contact the bank or app through an official support route rather than sharing credentials with anyone.
- For a UPI complaint, NPCI says users can raise or check it through the participating bank’s UPI app. If a transaction confirmation is missing, NPCI’s FAQ says to contact the bank if it has not arrived within an hour.
If your phone is lost
NPCI advises blocking the mobile number through your service provider if your phone is lost. Contact your bank through an official channel as well. Never share your UPI PIN: it authorizes transactions and should remain private. Do not disclose verification codes to anyone either.
