Cerebras Systems shares rose in premarket trading on October 5, 2026, after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Cerebras was a “close partner” amid speculation about which chips would run a new OpenAI model mode. The reports put the early move between 6.1% and 6.56%; those were snapshots from different outlets, not a confirmed closing return. Altman’s comment addressed the partnership broadly, but did not establish which hardware powers GPT-6.1 Sol’s “Ultrafast” mode or signal a change in the companies’ commercial outlook.

What happened to Cerebras stock?

Same-day coverage reported a premarket rise for Cerebras Systems on Monday, October 5, 2026, following a Friday post by Altman addressing speculation about OpenAI’s relationship with the chipmaker. Quartz reported a 6.3% gain to $177 per share; Investing.com reported a rise of as much as 6.1%; Benzinga reported 6.56%. These figures reflect different reported observation times, so they should not be treated as a single definitive price or as the stock’s full-day return.

Proactive later reported an 11% early-session rise on October 5, a later observation than the premarket figures. That is also a point-in-time report, not a closing return. Proactive’s report should be read separately from the earlier premarket snapshots.

What did Sam Altman say?

As reproduced by Quartz, Investing.com and Benzinga, Altman wrote: “There is some speculation about our partnership with Cerebras. Cerebras is a close partner, and we have a deep engagement pushing on the frontiers of speed.” The reports attribute the statement to his Friday post. Quartz, Investing.com and Benzinga reported the quote; the original X post was not available in those reports’ sourcing here.

His words reaffirmed a relationship and an emphasis on speed. They did not identify a specific Cerebras system in use, confirm a deployment for a named model mode, or announce new contract terms.

Why investors were watching the partnership

The immediate concern in the coverage was reporting that OpenAI had selected Nvidia GPUs rather than Cerebras hardware for GPT-6.1 Sol’s “Ultrafast” mode. That prompted questions about Cerebras’ role in OpenAI infrastructure. The exact hardware configuration for that mode remains unconfirmed by primary technical evidence in the cited reports. A report about one model mode should not be read as proof that one provider has replaced another across all OpenAI workloads.

Quartz reported that an agreement announced in January called for Cerebras to deliver 750 megawatts of computing capacity to OpenAI through 2028, and described the deal as worth $10 billion. Those terms are material context for investors, but Quartz’s account is not itself a contract or primary company announcement: Quartz’s October 5 report is the source for the figures.

What the price move does—and does not—show

A premarket bounce after a high-profile statement shows how investors reacted at that point in trading. It does not, on its own, demonstrate that revenue, margins, contract status or future deployments changed. Nor does the reported rise settle the technical question behind the speculation: which hardware is used for a particular workload.

Quartz reported that Cerebras had lost 20% during the prior week and touched its weakest level since its Nasdaq listing after reports about Nvidia and GPT-6.1 Sol. It also put the company’s market capitalization at just over $39 billion, compared with $95 billion at its May debut, and said the shares were nearly half below their post-IPO high. These are time-specific figures reported by Quartz, not current market values or independently verified calculations; see its October 5 coverage.

Analyst comments in the same coverage were interpretations, not confirmed operating results. Quartz said Citi analysts’ revenue projections through 2028 had not changed and quoted them saying it was too early to read much into the model deployment reports. The article also cited possible margin pressure and valuation as investor concerns. Investing.com reported Barclays analyst Tom O’Malley’s view that the OpenAI relationship remained strong and his characterization of the recent selloff as overdone. Those views are attributable to the analysts as reported by Quartz and Investing.com; they are not guarantees about Cerebras’ results or share price.
