No—not by itself. Centrus Energy (LEU) closed at $142.44 on October 9, 2026, about 69% below the $464.25 52-week high reported in a secondary market-data summary. Its $4.5 billion backlog is substantial, but it stretches to 2040 and includes conditional commitments, government work with funding and option risks, and deliveries that require more capacity. The backlog can inform a valuation; it does not establish that the stock is worth $143 or make it a buy.
What the $4.5 billion backlog represents
Centrus reported $4.5 billion of backlog as of June 30, 2026, up from $3.8 billion at December 31, 2025. The company defines backlog as estimated future revenue from work to be performed or from LEU and uranium deliveries. It is a long-term measure of contracted and expected business—not cash already collected, profit, or revenue due in the near term.

| Segment | Backlog at June 30, 2026 | Stated horizon | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| LEU | $3.7 billion | Through 2040 | About $3.0 billion consists of contingent LEU and HALEU sales commitments. |
| Technical Solutions | $0.8 billion | Through 2034 | Includes backlog tied to a legacy HALEU operating contract with a disclosed funding and option risk. |
| Total | $4.5 billion | Through 2040 | Combines different segments, timelines, and degrees of certainty. |
These figures are from Centrus Energy Corp.’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The filing also reports roughly $0.1 billion of customer advances and deferred revenue in the LEU segment. That is a useful contrast with backlog: advances are cash received for future deliveries, while most backlog represents work or deliveries still to be completed.

How much of the LEU backlog is firm?
Of the $3.7 billion LEU backlog, about $3.0 billion was described as contingent LEU and HALEU sales commitments. Centrus said $2.4 billion of that contingent amount was under definitive agreements. “Definitive” should not be read as “unconditional”: the filing says these commitments tend to depend on operational milestones and support for potential capacity construction at Piketon. Delivery, production capacity, and other stated conditions still matter.

The relevant investment question is therefore not simply how much backlog has been announced. It is how much can convert into deliveries, when those deliveries occur, what investment is needed to fulfill them, and how much cash and profit remain after costs.
What the signed $900 million DOE award does—and does not—secure
On July 1, 2026, Centrus subsidiary American Centrifuge Operating (ACO) signed a $900 million U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) HALEU production task order. It is a firm-fixed-price award, but payment is incremental and tied to performance-based milestones. The project requires expansion of the Piketon facility, with an initial delivery of one metric ton of HALEU UF6 due by July 2032. This is a meaningful government-backed opportunity, not $900 million of immediate cash or revenue.

| Contract element | What Centrus disclosed | Investment implication |
|---|---|---|
| Base task order | $900 million, paid as performance milestones are met | Revenue and cash depend on progress and milestone achievement. |
| Initial delivery | One metric ton of HALEU UF6 by July 2032 | Production depends on facility expansion and execution over several years. |
| DOE options | Two discretionary options, each for five additional metric tons at $17 million per metric ton; up to $170 million combined | Options are not guaranteed awards or backlog that should be treated as certain. |
Centrus’s filing says larger portions of the $900 million are tied to 2028 and completion of the initial phase in 2031. The timeline underscores why the award should be evaluated against construction progress and milestone performance, rather than treated as near-term earnings.

The separate risk in the legacy HALEU operating contract
The $0.8 billion of Technical Solutions backlog includes about $0.8 billion tied to the legacy HALEU Operation Contract. Centrus’s June 30, 2026 filing said the proposed FY2027 DOE budget did not include further funding to operate the cascade, and that DOE had communicated it did not currently intend to exercise further options.
Centrus said it was working with DOE on agreements that might allow private commercial operation, but the filing cautioned that there was no assurance an agreement would be reached. The brief three-month Option 1b covers maintenance and storage, not production. This exposure is distinct from the newly signed $900 million production task order; the two should not be treated as one assured stream of government-backed work.

What the share price and 52-week high tell you
Centrus’s investor-relations historical-price page lists a $142.44 closing price on October 9, 2026. The $464.25 52-week high comes from a secondary market-data summary. Comparing those figures, the close was about 69% below the high. That describes the size of the price decline; it does not show whether the shares are cheap, whether the high was justified, or whether the stock will recover. The comparison is to a 52-week high, not an established all-time high.

Price alone also does not turn the backlog into a per-share value. Centrus’s filing reported 19,233,658 Class A shares and 719,200 Class B shares outstanding as of August 1, 2026. Those dated figures are not a complete forecast of future share count: a valuation should consider subsequent share-count changes and potential financing or dilution. Dividing backlog by shares would produce no meaningful estimate of shareholder value because backlog is not earnings, cash flow, or equity.

A practical framework for deciding whether $143 is attractive
The backlog is most useful as an input to a valuation, not as a valuation shortcut. Build the case around expected cash flows per share and test the assumptions that determine whether long-dated commitments become profitable deliveries.
- Estimate conversion, not just headline size. Separate contingent sales commitments from other backlog, then assess the operational milestones, capacity, and customer commitments needed for each to turn into deliveries.
- Model timing and funding. For government work, distinguish signed awards from discretionary options and potential future task orders. Reflect milestone payment schedules and the time required to perform.
- Account for capacity investment and execution. Estimate the capital and operating resources needed for Piketon expansion, and consider what happens to projected returns if construction, qualification, or delivery timing slips.
- Estimate margins and cash conversion. Backlog reports estimated future revenue, not the profit or free cash flow Centrus will earn. Use explicit assumptions for pricing, costs, margins, working capital, and capital spending; do not infer them from the backlog total.
- Test government funding and contract options. Model the legacy operating-contract risk separately from the signed production task order, and do not count discretionary options or unfunded opportunities as certain.
- Translate the result into value per share. Use an appropriate discount rate for long-dated and execution-dependent cash flows, and account for share-count changes and possible financing needs. Compare a range of outcomes with the market price rather than relying on one optimistic scenario.
Centrus reported $448.7 million in 2025 revenue and $77.8 million in 2025 net income in its 2025 results release. Those are historical company results, not forecasts of the margins or cash flows on future backlog. A credible valuation still needs assumptions about future LEU pricing and margins, contract conversion, capital needs, and execution—inputs not established by the backlog figure itself.
What would strengthen or weaken the case
- Would strengthen it: evidence that contingent commitments are converting into deliverable orders; visible progress expanding Piketon; achievement of DOE milestones; and a credible path to cash generation without excessive financing or dilution.
- Would weaken it: delays or cost overruns in capacity expansion; failure to convert conditional sales commitments; missed or delayed milestone payments; loss of expected government funding or options; or financing that materially dilutes existing shareholders.
The central question is whether the expected, risk-adjusted cash flows from Centrus’s future work support the current equity value per share. A large backlog and a sharp fall from a 52-week high answer neither that question nor whether $143 is an attractive entry price.
