Neither a centralized exchange (CEX) nor a decentralized exchange (DEX) is automatically cheaper, more liquid, or safer for every ETH trade. The better fit depends on the exact trading pair and order size, the live price and depth, all trading and network costs, and whether you want an exchange to hold your assets or prefer to authorize swaps from your own wallet.
How ETH trading works on a CEX versus a DEX
A CEX such as Coinbase Advanced typically matches orders through a central limit order book. Buyers and sellers place bids and asks; a market order can fill against available orders, while a limit order specifies a price. Coinbase Advanced displays order-book data and applies maker or taker fees.
A DEX such as Uniswap executes a wallet-authorized swap through smart contracts against liquidity pools. The amount received depends on the pool’s current state, the trade size, and the route. Uniswap describes its swaps as executing against passive pool liquidity, rather than matching an order against discrete bids and asks. Uniswap’s swap documentation also explains that transaction ordering is affected by the gas offered.
These mechanisms matter: a quoted pool swap and a limit order on an order book are not equivalent offers. Compare the amount you can actually receive for your intended trade, not just a displayed price or headline fee.

What costs belong in an ETH trade comparison?
Compare the final amount received after visible fees and execution effects. The cost categories differ by venue, so a low fee in one category does not prove that the trade is cheaper overall.
| Cost or factor | CEX | DEX |
|---|---|---|
| Trading or pool fee | Maker/taker rate varies by product, fee tier, and order behavior. Check the current account fee schedule and order preview. | Pool swap fee varies by pool; check it alongside the quoted output. |
| Spread or price impact | Compare the bid-ask spread and available order-book depth for the exact pair and size. Aggressive orders can consume available depth. | Check quoted output and price impact. Larger swaps can move the pool price; route selection can also affect the result. |
| Network transaction cost | Not a cost of placing an order on the exchange order book, though a later withdrawal may have a network cost. | On Ethereum mainnet, a swap requires a network transaction and enough ETH to pay its fee. The cost varies with network conditions. |
| Other quote effects | Some simpler buy or sell products may include a spread; review the quote for the product you are using. | Routing and transaction ordering can affect execution. A displayed quote is sensitive to pool state. |
CEX fees depend on product and order behavior
Coinbase says Advanced trading fees vary by product, fee tier, and whether an order provides or takes liquidity. An order filled immediately, such as a market order, is taker; an order resting on the book before it is matched is maker when filled. Rates depend on the account’s current criteria and may change, so check Coinbase Advanced fees and the order preview before trading.
Coinbase distinguishes Advanced order-book trading from simpler trade quotes: it says Advanced does not include a spread because users interact directly with the order book, while simple trade quotes can include a spread and fees. Its broader disclosure says costs may vary with order size, market conditions, payment method, asset, and jurisdiction. See Coinbase’s trading fee disclosure and confirm the quote for your product.

DEX fees are only part of the swap cost
For a DEX swap, evaluate the pool fee, quoted output, price impact, and network cost separately. On Ethereum, Uniswap says a user needs a wallet, assets to swap, and enough ETH to cover transaction fees. The fee is time-sensitive; do not rely on a fixed gas-cost figure without a current estimate. Uniswap’s swap instructions describe the practical requirements.

- Choose the exact ETH pair and the amount you intend to trade. Verify that the pair and product are available to your account and in your jurisdiction.
- On the CEX, inspect the current order book, spread, fee tier, and order preview for that size. If using a simple buy or sell quote rather than an order book, include any displayed spread and fees.
- On the DEX, inspect the quoted output, route, pool fee, price impact, and estimated network fee. Make sure the wallet has enough native network currency to submit the transaction.
- Compare the final amount received after the visible costs. Include any withdrawal or transfer cost if your goal requires moving ETH off the CEX or between networks.
This comparison is a decision method, not a standing ranking: quotes and available depth change, and neither venue type is guaranteed to deliver the better result.
Which venue has better liquidity for ETH?
There is no universal answer without specifying the pair, trade size, venue, and time. For an order book, examine executable depth and spread at the price levels your trade would reach. For a pool swap, examine reserves, quoted output, and price impact. Large orders may encounter worse execution in either structure if available liquidity is insufficient near the quoted price.

A historical Uniswap Labs analysis by Gordon Liao and Dan Robinson, published May 5, 2022, reported that Uniswap v3 had about twice the liquidity of Binance and Coinbase for ETH/USD; about three times Binance’s and 4.5 times Coinbase’s for ETH/BTC; and about three times major centralized exchanges on average for ETH/mid-cap pairs. The authors’ comparison was a historical sample, not a current ranking. It excluded transaction costs such as Ethereum gas, venue fees, and unexpected pre-trade slippage. See the authors’ analysis and methodology.
Those figures cannot establish which venue currently offers the best execution for your trade. Check live depth or a current swap quote for the exact pair and size instead.
How custody changes the risks and responsibilities
On a CEX, assets in your account are hosted
CEX trading takes place through an account managed by the provider. Assets left there are held as hosted balances under that provider’s service and custody arrangements. This can make account-based trading simpler, but you rely on the platform’s operational and custody practices. A hosted balance is not the same as personally controlling the wallet keys.

On a DEX, your wallet authorizes the transaction
With a DEX, you connect a wallet and approve transactions that smart contracts execute. Uniswap describes its protocol as designed for self-custody. That shifts control and responsibility: you need to protect wallet access, verify the transaction and token, and understand what an approval authorizes. Losing access or approving a harmful transaction can put assets at risk.
Self-custody does not remove protocol, token, phishing, or smart-contract risk, and it does not make every DEX trade safe. A hardware wallet may help protect access to signing keys, but it cannot prevent a user from approving a harmful transaction or eliminate contract and token risks.

| If your priority is… | Consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Order-book tools and account-based trading | A CEX | Pair availability, jurisdiction, current fee tier, order-book depth, and whether the product is Advanced or a simpler quoted trade. |
| Swapping from a wallet without depositing assets into a hosted exchange account | A DEX | Wallet compatibility, token and contract risks, quoted output, route, price impact, pool fee, and network fee. |
| Minimizing execution cost on a particular ETH trade | Compare both for that trade | Use the same pair and approximate size at roughly the same time, then compare final amounts after visible fees and execution effects. |
| Reducing responsibility for wallet-key management | A hosted CEX account may be operationally simpler | Understand that assets left on-platform are subject to the provider’s custody and operational arrangements. |
| Keeping control of wallet signing | A DEX may fit better | Be prepared to secure the wallet, review transactions and approvals, and pay network fees. |
Availability is not uniform: CEX account access and supported pairs depend on the provider and jurisdiction. DEX access requires a compatible wallet, suitable assets, and funds for network fees; permissionless token availability also means the user must assess token and contract risks.

What a DEX does—and does not—remove
Uniswap Labs’ February 21, 2025 explainer defines a DEX as “a peer-to-peer marketplace that allows users to swap crypto assets without an intermediary.” Its article also reported more than $4 trillion in all-time swap volume at publication, a protocol-reported cumulative figure rather than an independent market-wide statistic. See Uniswap Labs’ DEX explainer.
Trading without a centralized intermediary does not mean trading without costs or risk. A DEX swap still relies on smart contracts, pool liquidity, wallet security, and network execution. A CEX order book and a DEX pool simply allocate control, execution, and responsibility differently.
