Centralized Exchanges vs. On-Chain Perpetuals: Key Risks and Differences

Centralized and on-chain perpetual venues shift risks rather than remove them. Compare custody, execution, funding, liquidation and regulatory protections before trading.

Neither centralized exchanges nor on-chain perpetual venues are categorically safer. They place risk in different parts of the trading system: a centralized exchange (CEX) concentrates custody and operational dependence in an operator, while an on-chain venue may let users retain wallet control but adds responsibility for keys, smart contracts and blockchain infrastructure. Both leave traders exposed to leverage, funding, liquidity, execution and liquidation risk. The practical comparison is between the safeguards and failure modes of specific venues—not their labels.

What changes when you trade perpetuals on-chain?

A perpetual contract has no maturity date. Unlike a dated futures contract, it does not expire and therefore has no expiry date at which convergence with spot is assured. Instead, periodic funding transfers between long and short holders are intended to encourage the perpetual price to track the underlying spot price. The rate can change, and a trader may pay funding rather than receive it. He, Manela, Ross and von Wachter explain these mechanics in their 2022 paper.

Risk area Centralized exchange On-chain perpetual venue
Custody Customers generally depend on the operator’s custody, account records, solvency and withdrawal arrangements. A venue may allow trading from a self-custodial wallet, but users must protect keys and understand how collateral is held and accessed.
Execution and visibility Matching, margining and liquidation are generally operated by the exchange; what users can independently inspect depends on the venue. Some activity may be recorded on a public blockchain, but public transaction visibility does not establish that every component is on-chain or independently verifiable.
Technical and operational dependencies Users rely on the exchange’s systems and operations as well as its custody arrangements. Depending on the design, users may also depend on smart contracts, blockchain availability, oracles, wallets, bridges or validators.
Trading risks Leverage, funding, liquidity, execution and liquidation risks remain. Leverage, funding, liquidity, execution and liquidation risks remain.

This is a comparison of common structural tendencies, not a claim that every CEX or on-chain venue works the same way. A product may combine on-chain and off-chain components, and its actual risk depends on its implementation and rules.

Where custody and recovery risks differ

Centralized exchange: dependence on the operator

With account-based trading, the customer depends on the exchange’s asset controls, records, systems, solvency and withdrawal process. If the operator or a custodian fails, the ability to access assets can depend on the custody arrangement and the law that applies. FINMA’s 12 January 2026 custody guidance discusses the infrastructure challenges of crypto-asset custody and the legal complexity that can arise when assets are held abroad. FINMA says customer assets should not form part of a custodian’s bankruptcy estate, but that Swiss supervisory discussion is not a universal insolvency guarantee; the outcome depends on applicable rules and arrangements.

On-chain venue: control of keys becomes the user’s job

Some on-chain trading designs let a user connect a self-custodial wallet rather than place collateral in an exchange omnibus account. A comment submitted to a CFTC docket describes one implementation in which user actions, including orders and liquidations, are recorded on a publicly auditable blockchain and collateral is held through self-custody. That is a submitter’s description of a particular design, not a CFTC finding and not a description of every venue.

Self-custody shifts rather than removes operational risk. A lost or compromised private key can mean permanent loss of access to assets. A wallet or hardware wallet may help a user control keys, but it cannot prevent losses caused by leverage, liquidation, vulnerable protocol code, oracle problems, chain outages or market moves.

Why transparency does not settle the safety question

Publicly auditable transactions can give users a way to inspect some execution activity and fund flows. That visibility can aid verification, but it does not prove that the software is correct, that execution is fair, that markets are liquid, or that all parts of the product operate on-chain. Nor does it remove smart-contract, blockchain, oracle or key-management risk.

When evaluating a venue, establish where orders are matched and settled, what records are public, and which components remain off-chain or depend on a service provider. A public transaction record is evidence about the activity it records—not a guarantee about the entire trading system.

How funding and liquidation can affect a position

Funding is a variable payment, not a promised yield

Funding is designed to encourage the perpetual price to track spot, but a funding rate is not a guaranteed return for holding a position. Its direction and amount can change; a trader receiving funding at one point may later pay it. The venue’s methodology matters: check how the rate is calculated, when it is set and charged, and which prices or market inputs it uses.

Liquidation mechanics matter in a fast market

Leverage magnifies exposure relative to collateral. The exact path to liquidation depends on venue rules, including the trigger threshold, the price used to assess the position, how quickly orders can execute and what happens if losses exceed posted collateral. Read those rules before opening a position; a venue’s public or self-custodial design does not remove the possibility of forced closure or losses.

Why cross-venue funding arbitrage is not risk-free carry

A funding spread between a CEX and an on-chain venue can look like a low-risk way to collect payments, but the trade is a basis trade with execution and operational dependencies. Edson Pindza’s 2026 paper in Digital Finance identifies spread compression, imperfect cross-venue hedging, execution frictions, forced liquidation, and settlement or smart-contract disruption as ways the strategy can fail. A hedge can also be imperfect if the two positions do not move or settle in the same way.

The paper’s empirical design uses Binance Futures funding observations for BTC, ETH and SOL from January 2021 through December 2024. It also models synthetic DEX funding rates to isolate oracle lag, structural spread and higher DEX-rate noise, then runs a robustness exercise with observed dYdX v4 funding data over an overlapping available window. The synthetic DEX scenarios are not observations across all protocols, and the paper cautions that results are assumption-sensitive rather than frictionless arbitrage profits. Its analysis does not provide a current market-wide ranking of CEX and on-chain venue safety.

What to check before choosing a venue

Compare the rules and dependencies of the specific products you would use. These questions help expose where losses, access problems or forced exits could arise:

  • Custody and recovery: Who controls the keys and collateral? What happens if the operator, custodian, protocol or blockchain fails, and what withdrawal or recovery process applies?
  • Execution and observability: Where are orders matched and settled? Which records can you independently inspect, and what activity or infrastructure remains off-chain?
  • Liquidity and costs: Compare market depth, spreads, slippage, trading fees and network costs. Consider whether you could close a position during stressed conditions.
  • Funding design: How is the rate calculated, when is it fixed or paid, and which reference prices or market inputs affect it?
  • Margin and liquidation: What triggers liquidation, which price is used, how quickly can the venue act, and how are losses beyond collateral handled?
  • Technical dependencies: Identify the smart contracts, oracles, bridges, wallets, validators and blockchains the product relies on, and what happens if one is unavailable or compromised.
  • Legal and operational safeguards: Check your jurisdiction, access restrictions, disclosures, custody arrangements, reserve or insurance mechanisms, and default-management rules.

Which regulatory protections apply?

Regulatory descriptions depend on both jurisdiction and venue type. The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission’s 2026 high-level framework concerns perpetual contracts offered by SFC-licensed virtual-asset trading platforms. Its described topics include funding payments intended to promote intra-day and/or daily price convergence, risk disclosures, liquidation triggers and settlement prices, loss allocation, and reserve or insurance-fund arrangements. That scope should not be treated as a global rule or as automatically applying to permissionless protocols.

FINMA’s January 2026 guidance is relevant to crypto-asset custody and cross-border insolvency issues, not a general rule for derivatives. For any venue, confirm which regulator, if any, supervises the relevant product in your jurisdiction and what protections actually apply to your account and collateral.
