The unauthorized access ran from March 19 through June 1, 2025. The Maine Attorney General’s amended filing identifies 138,800 affected Maine residents, while the remaining 6,581 people were elsewhere. Notifications continued through December 29, 2025, and eligible individuals were offered one year of TransUnion credit and dark-web monitoring.
The public notices do not establish that every person’s medical records, Social Security number, or driver’s-license number was taken. The information varied by individual and was described as potentially involved.

What happened
The Maine Attorney General classified the event as an external system breach involving hacking. Central Maine Healthcare’s notice says an unauthorized party had access to its information-technology environment from March 19, 2025, through June 1, 2025.
Central Maine Healthcare says it detected unusual network activity on June 1, secured its systems, engaged outside cybersecurity specialists, and notified law enforcement. Its analysis was completed on November 6, 2025. The public notices do not identify an attacker, ransomware group, initial access method, ransom demand, or any confirmed public posting of the data.

There is a date discrepancy in the public record: Central Maine Healthcare describes June 1 as the date it first became aware of the activity, while the amended Maine filing lists July 29, 2025, as the discovery date. Those dates may reflect different administrative milestones, but the published materials do not explain the difference.
How the reported count changed
The eight-person figure and the later 145,381-person figure refer to the same incident at different stages of the investigation. The first Maine filing listed a preliminary count of eight. After forensic review and record analysis, the amended filing reported 145,381 individuals.
| Reporting stage | Number | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier Maine filing | 8 | Initial preliminary count |
| Amended Maine filing | 145,381 | Final publicly reported scope |
| Maine residents in amended filing | 138,800 | Official state filing total |
| People outside Maine | 6,581 | Calculated from the amended totals |
Headlines that say “more than 145,000” are rounding the official total. One secondary report used 138,880 for Maine residents, but the amended Attorney General filing gives 138,800; this article uses the official filing figure.

Who may be affected
The affected population appears to include Central Maine Healthcare patients as well as current and former employees. Not every affected person necessarily lived in Maine, and not every person connected with a Central Maine Healthcare facility was necessarily included.
The system serves Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and hospitals and other facilities associated with Bridgton and Rumford, among other services. Those locations provide context only; the public notices do not say that every facility, department, or patient record was involved.

How to tell whether you were affected
Check the individual letter
The notification letter is the best source for your specific exposure. It should identify the categories of information associated with your records and explain eligibility for monitoring. A person may have been included as a former employee rather than a patient.
If no letter arrived
Not receiving a notice does not prove you were unaffected. Addresses can be outdated, a letter can be mistaken for junk mail, or a person can be included in a later notification wave. Contact Central Maine Healthcare through contact information verified on its official website, not through an unsolicited message.

What protection Central Maine Healthcare offered
Eligible individuals were offered one year of TransUnion credit and dark-web monitoring and identity-protection services. The public announcement does not establish that enrollment remains open beyond the period stated in an individual notice, so use the deadline and instructions in your letter.
Monitoring can alert you to some credit-file changes or exposed credentials, but it is not a guarantee against medical identity theft, tax or benefits fraud, account takeover, or misuse that never reaches a credit report. A credit freeze is a separate, preventive tool: it generally blocks prospective creditors from accessing your file until you temporarily lift the freeze, although that can add friction when applying for credit, housing, utilities, or some jobs.
What potentially affected people should do
- Read and save the notice. Confirm which data categories applied to you and record any enrollment deadline.
- Use the offered monitoring if you are eligible. Enroll only through the instructions in the official letter or verified Central Maine Healthcare notice. Do not respond to an unsolicited email, text, or call claiming to provide enrollment.
- Freeze your credit when appropriate. If your Social Security number or driver’s-license number may be involved, consider freezes with all three nationwide credit bureaus. A freeze is generally more protective against new-account fraud than monitoring alone.
- Review credit reports and financial accounts. Look for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, address changes, or transactions and dispute anything you do not recognize.
- Check medical and insurance records. Review explanation-of-benefits statements, provider bills, prescriptions, claims, patient portals, and medical records for services, diagnoses, equipment, or medicines you did not receive.
- Report medical identity theft. Notify the provider or insurer, request corrections to inaccurate records, and keep copies of every submission.
- Harden online accounts. Use unique passwords, multifactor authentication where available, and alerts on financial and insurance accounts.
- Expect follow-up phishing. Scammers may impersonate Central Maine Healthcare, TransUnion, an insurer, a credit bureau, or a law firm. Do not give a caller your full Social Security number or account credentials merely because they know you received a breach letter.
- Keep documentation. Save the notice, enrollment confirmation, suspicious messages, disputed claims, credit-bureau correspondence, and any out-of-pocket costs.
Lawsuits, investigations, and compensation
Law firms have announced investigations or potential class actions. A January 2026 report said two complaints had been filed and consolidated in Maine state court, but that account is secondary reporting and is not, by itself, proof of a certified class, settlement, judgment, or payment. No public information cited here establishes that affected people are entitled to compensation.
Before relying on a legal solicitation, check the actual court docket and distinguish among an investigation, a filed complaint, consolidation, class certification, settlement approval, and a final judgment. You do not need to hire a lawyer or buy a separate monitoring service to take the protective steps above.
What remains unknown
- How the attacker initially obtained access.
- Whether ransomware or a ransom demand was involved.
- Whether every potentially accessible file was actually exfiltrated.
- Whether any Central Maine Healthcare data appeared on the dark web or was publicly posted.
- Whether fraudulent activity has been confirmed and how many people experienced it.
- Whether any lawsuit has produced a certified class, settlement, or other final court order.
Central Maine Healthcare says it secured systems and implemented enhanced monitoring and alerting software. The available notices do not provide evidence that unauthorized access is continuing.
