Celestica acquired Bull Electronics Inc. (BEI), a contract electronics manufacturer in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 2000. The purchase price was not disclosed. Contemporary coverage described a 130,000-square-foot facility with more than 200 employees, and Celestica said the acquisition would strengthen its New England services.
What Celestica acquired
Celestica’s company history says it acquired all of BEI’s shares from Bull HN Information Systems Inc. in 2000. The contemporary account in EE Times, published August 2, 2000, described BEI as a four-year-old division of French conglomerate Groupe Bull. These accounts identify Bull HN as the immediate seller and Groupe Bull as the broader corporate context.
EE Times reported that the transaction covered BEI’s Lowell plant, which had more than 200 employees and occupied 130,000 square feet. The plant provided printed-circuit-board assembly, full system assembly, testing, and supply-chain management services.
What the deal cost—and what the figures mean
The purchase price was undisclosed in the EE Times report. The same article gave the plant an annual run rate of $40 million. That figure describes the operation’s reported run rate; it is not the acquisition price, and the article does not identify it as audited revenue.

Why Celestica bought the Lowell operation
Celestica presented the acquisition as a way to broaden its regional capabilities. President and chief executive Eugene Polistuk said, “The addition of this operation and its seasoned management team enhances Celestica’s overall service offerings in the New England area.” EE Times framed the purchase as an expansion of Celestica’s U.S. operations.
The article also noted that Celestica leased a 37,000-square-foot facility in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Merrill Lynch analyst Jerry Labowitz argued that demand for Celestica’s services in New England called for more capacity, which could be handled by the newly acquired operation. That was Labowitz’s analysis, not a company statement.

How it fit into Celestica’s acquisition history
Celestica’s company history lists the BEI purchase among its 2000 acquisitions and says it was the company’s 20th acquisition in three years. The history identifies Lowell as the location and Bull HN Information Systems Inc. as the seller.
