The Reading FC sale is confirmed. A fresh takeover development and a reaction from Jobi McAnuff to it are not. We could not verify any report in which McAnuff comments on takeover news, so the phrase “cautiously optimistic” should not be credited to him. The verified record runs from the 2025 exclusivity period to a sale to Redwood Holdings Limited, which BBC Sport reported as completed in May 2025. The phrase has been used in Reading coverage before, but for different people and different events.
What is confirmed about the sale
Four points are backed by official club statements or established news reporting:
- Reading FC announced in March 2025 that exclusivity remained in place with a proposed purchaser. The proposal covered the club, Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Facility (Reading FC statement, 27 March 2025).
- On 3 May 2025 the club announced a sale in principle to Redwood Holdings Limited. The club said the deal included the stadium and training ground. It identified Redwood as a subsidiary of Dogwood Football LLC, owned by Rob Couhig and Todd Trosclair (Reading FC statement, 3 May 2025).
- BBC Sport reported in January 2026 that Couhig completed his takeover in May 2025 (BBC Sport, 2 January 2026).
- The same BBC report covered Couhig’s denial of rumours that Reading planned to sell its training ground or downgrade its academy.
Sale timeline
| Date | Stage | What was reported | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 February 2025 | Exclusivity | Reading entered a period of exclusivity with a potential buyer. The Guardian also noted the club’s history of failed sale attempts. | The Guardian |
| 27 March 2025 | Exclusivity continues | The club confirmed exclusivity remained in place. The proposed sale included the club, the stadium and the training facility. | Reading FC |
| 3 May 2025 | Sale in principle | Announced as a sale in principle to Redwood Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Dogwood Football LLC. | Reading FC |
| May 2025 | Completion | Rob Couhig’s takeover reported as completed. The month is as stated by BBC Sport. | BBC Sport |
Why “sale in principle” and “completion” are different
A sale in principle is an agreed direction, not a finished transfer of ownership. The club’s May 2025 statement used the first description. BBC Sport’s January 2026 report describes the later stage, completion. When you read a takeover story, check which stage it describes and whether the date refers to the announcement or the legal completion.
Where “cautiously optimistic” has appeared
The 2012 Zingarevich takeover
A 2012 BBC Sport report used the phrase for football finance expert Professor Chris Brady’s assessment of the Zingarevich takeover. That report is about an earlier ownership change. In a 21 January 2012 BBC Sport report, then chairman Sir John Madejski said: “Everything we do must be prudent, if it’s not prudent then we won’t do it” (BBC Sport, 21 January 2012). That line describes the club under the previous ownership and is not a current owner’s position.

Supporters’ reaction in February 2025
The Guardian reported that the supporters’ group Sell Before We Dai described its response to the exclusivity announcement as cautiously optimistic. That quote belongs to the group, not to a current player or former player.
What could not be verified
We found no report in which Jobi McAnuff reacts to a fresh Reading FC takeover development. We also did not find a verifiable statement from him on the 2025 sale or the Couhig ownership. Until an original interview, broadcast or article is published with his words, a quotation attributed to him should not be treated as fact. The claim that a new takeover development prompted a reaction from him remains unconfirmed.

How to check a quote like this
- Find the original interview, broadcast or article, not a repost or social media summary.
- Confirm the speaker’s exact words. Check whether the text is a direct quote or a paraphrase.
- Check the date and identify which event the speaker was responding to. Older phrases are often reused in new stories.
- Compare the claim with the club’s official statements, such as the 27 March 2025 and 3 May 2025 releases.
- If the original cannot be found, treat the attribution as unverified.
For a personal-finance reader, the same habits apply to any headline that attaches a statement to a named person or a financial event: confirm the original source, the date and the stage of the deal before you act on it.
