Cattle futures rose at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) on November 10, 2022, while grain markets faced pressure from investor profit-taking. Lower corn futures were cited as support for feeder cattle. These are historical session results, not current market quotes.

How cattle futures closed on November 10, 2022

Reuters reported the following settlements for the November 10, 2022 CME session. Prices are in cents per pound, and the changes are from the previous session.

Contract Settlement Change
December live cattle 153.075 cents per pound Up 1.500 cents per pound
February live cattle 155.025 cents per pound Up 0.875 cent per pound
January feeder cattle (most active) 181.700 cents per pound Up 2.05 cents per pound

February live cattle rebounded from the previous session’s slump. December CME lean hogs moved in the opposite direction, easing 0.400 cent per pound to 84.875 cents per pound. Reuters’ dispatch, republished by Successful Farming, describes these specific session results.

Why feeder cattle rose as grain markets weakened

The dispatch attributed support for feeder cattle to falling corn futures. Lower corn prices can ease a major feed-cost input, offering a market-specific reason for feeder cattle futures to rise even as grain prices came under pressure. This explains the reported move; it does not establish a general or lasting relationship between corn and cattle prices.

#1 Best Overall

For grains, brokers cited investor profit-taking. The report also noted that the U.S. dollar fell after October consumer prices rose less than expected, but it did not provide a CPI figure or say that this development reversed grain-market pressure.

Futures, cash trade, and the supply figures in the report

Futures settlements are contract prices, not a record of the price paid for cattle in the cash market. Cash cattle trade had been limited during the week, and traders expected more business on Friday; the dispatch did not report a specific cash price.

USDA estimates cited in the dispatch put cattle slaughter at 129,000 head, compared with 128,000 a week earlier and 116,000 a year earlier. The same report estimated hog slaughter at 490,000 head, versus 489,000 a week earlier and 447,000 a year earlier. These are estimates reported in 2022, not current figures.

Other livestock-market context reported that day

USDA’s reported U.S. pork carcass cutout value was $96.82 per hundredweight, up $2.70 from Wednesday. Broker and grains analyst Dax Wedemeyer of US Commodities in West Des Moines, Iowa, said: “For hogs, that market continues to be seeing seasonal price pressure, as are ham values.”

The dispatch also said USDA reported that China canceled exports of both U.S. pork and beef sales on Thursday. It gave no quantities or reason, so the item does not establish the scale or cause of the cancellations.
