Short answer: Venmo documents explicit Public, Friends, and Private settings for payment visibility, including controls for individual and past payments. Cash App’s privacy notice describes some information that may be shown to other Cash App customers to help identify one another, but it does not establish a Venmo-style public social feed. Both services let you review transaction records; neither service’s privacy controls make a payment anonymous to its recipient or to the provider.

Here is what the documented controls do—and what they do not establish—based on US English company materials reviewed October 4, 2026. Menu labels may vary by app version, profile type, or region.

Who can see payment details?

Information described as available to other customers Cash App’s privacy notice says some information—including name, Cashtag, prior transaction history, join date, and whether a person appears in a viewer’s contacts—may be available to other Cash App customers to help identify the person they transact with. The notice does not establish that all of this information is public or that Cash App uses Venmo’s public-feed model. Cash App Privacy Notice, effective June 8, 2026. Payment visibility can be Public, Friends, or Private. Venmo says it uses the more restrictive setting selected by the two payment partners. Venmo privacy settings.
Default and per-payment controls The cited Cash App materials do not establish a comparable audience selector for each payment. Check the specific payment screen and current in-app controls before sending. Set a default at Me > Settings > Privacy, and adjust the privacy of an individual payment before or after sending it. Venmo privacy settings.
Past activity Cash App documents transaction history and receipts; the cited materials do not describe a control for hiding past payments from other customers. Past payments can be changed only to a more private setting. Privacy settings also include an option to hide all past transactions. Venmo privacy settings.
Friends list and profile discoverability The cited privacy notice does not establish a Venmo-style friends-list control. Separate from payment privacy, manage the friends list at Me > Settings > Privacy > Friends List. You can choose who sees the list and turn off the option for your profile to appear in other users’ lists. Venmo says it has not automatically added device contacts as friends since 2022. Venmo friends settings.
Private transaction records Activity receipts, statements, and 12- and 24-month transaction-history views are described in Cash App’s Terms of Service. Cash App Terms of Service. Recent transactions are available in the app’s Me tab; monthly statements can be viewed or downloaded as CSV in the app or on the web. Venmo Transaction History.

This is a comparison of documented controls, not a controlled test of every screen or a basis for declaring one service universally more private. A recipient still needs enough information to identify and account for a payment, and the service provider processes transaction information.

How to make Venmo activity less visible

  1. Choose a default. In Venmo, open Me > Settings > Privacy and choose Public, Friends, or Private as the default for payments. Use Private if you do not want payment details shared with the public or friends through payment visibility.
  2. Check each payment. Before sending, inspect the payment’s privacy setting; change it for that transaction if needed. You can also change a payment’s setting after it is sent, but a past payment can only be made more private.
  3. Review past transactions separately. In Privacy settings, use the option to hide all past transactions if you want to apply a more private setting to earlier activity. This is a visibility control; the cited help page does not say it deletes Venmo’s underlying records.
  4. Review your friends list. Go to Me > Settings > Privacy > Friends List to choose who can see the list and whether your profile appears in other users’ lists. This setting is separate from payment privacy.

Venmo says the more restrictive setting selected by either payment partner applies. A counterparty’s choice can therefore make the payment less visible than your own selection would otherwise allow.

What Cash App says about transaction visibility

Cash App’s privacy notice describes transaction information it collects, including timing and location, the parties’ names, descriptions, amounts, devices, and payment methods. It also says certain information may be available to other Cash App customers to help them confirm they are transacting with the right person. That is a narrower, specific statement about customer-to-customer identification; it should not be read as proof that every Cash App payment is publicly displayed.

The notice also describes choices related to targeted advertising and related data sharing under Account & Settings > Privacy. Those advertising choices are distinct from payment visibility and do not amount to a setting that makes a transaction anonymous to its recipient or to Cash App. Cash App Privacy Notice.

The cited Cash App materials do not establish a Venmo-equivalent Public/Friends/Private audience selector or an option to hide past payments from other customers. Because controls and screens can change, review the specific payment screen and current privacy settings in your app rather than assuming a Venmo-style feed control exists.

Where to review records and statements

Cash App

Cash App’s Terms of Service say receipts are available in Activity and at cash.app, and that users can view statements after logging in. The terms describe access to 12-month and 24-month transaction history in the app or on the account website. These are ways to review account records; the cited terms do not establish that changing visibility deletes records held by Cash App. Cash App Terms of Service.

Venmo

In the app, use the Me tab to view recent transactions. Monthly statements can be selected by year and month and viewed or downloaded as CSV from the app or web. Venmo lists statements for personal, Teen, business, and charity profiles; a Teen Account statement is accessible to the parent or guardian account holder. Venmo Transaction History.

Making a payment less visible to other users and retaining a record for your own finances are different needs. Keep the service’s history or statement access in mind if you need to reconcile payments; hiding a feed entry should not be treated as evidence that the provider’s record was erased.

Payment privacy is not account security

Visibility settings determine who may see payment activity under the app’s documented controls. Security features protect access to an account or payment process; they do not change the audience for a payment.

  • Cash App Security Lock: Cash App says users can require a face, fingerprint, or PIN before a payment. Its security page also describes alerts for sign-ins, large transactions, and account-setting changes, plus encryption of transactions and messages in transit. These are company-stated features, not independent audit findings. Cash App Security.
  • Venmo payment privacy: Public, Friends, and Private settings govern payment visibility; they are not a substitute for protecting account access.

Cash App reports that it has blocked “$2B+” in peer-to-peer scams since 2020; that is a company-reported figure on its security page, not an independently verified comparative measure of privacy or security. Cash App Security.

Keep payment notes useful, not revealing

Cash App announced required notes for peer-to-peer payments on May 28, 2025, saying notes allow convenient tracking of prior transactions. Venmo also requires a payment note. A note can reveal context even when the payment itself has a restrictive audience setting, so keep it accurate and brief. Do not include account numbers, passwords, home addresses, or other secrets. Before you send: a quick check

  • Check the default privacy setting before sending money, then inspect the audience on each payment.
  • On Venmo, review the friends-list control separately from payment privacy.
  • Write only the minimum note needed to identify the payment, without sensitive personal or account details.
  • Use the app’s Activity, history, or statements to review your own records; do not assume a less-visible payment has been deleted from provider records.
  • Recheck the app itself if a menu path or label differs. The cited help pages are US English materials reviewed October 4, 2026, and settings may vary by version, profile type, or region.
