People who do not use Cash App can usually pay through a shared link with Apple Pay or Google Pay, but this is not a general Apple Pay or Google Pay option for ordinary Cash App transfers. Cash App says starting a Pool and contributing from a Cash App balance are free; a 3% fee applies when a credit card funds the contribution, including through either wallet. Pools are intended for trusted personal groups, not escrow, charity, business sales or political fundraising.
What Cash App Pools actually adds
Cash App announced Pools on July 29, 2025, initially for a select group of customers. Its current product page describes an established group-payment feature for collecting toward trips, gifts, tickets, meals and other shared personal expenses. The organizer creates a named Pool, sets a target and shares invitations or a link. Cash App users can contribute in the app; eligible people without Cash App can use the link and pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay.

The organizer can see progress, identify contributors and view amounts paid. When ready, the organizer closes the Pool and transfers the collected amount to their Cash App balance. The Pool itself is not a separate wallet for the group.

How Apple Pay and Google Pay fit in
What contributors can do
- Open the organizer’s Pool link.
- Review the Pool name, purpose and target.
- Choose Apple Pay or Google Pay when the option is offered and complete payment with an eligible funding source.
- Contribute without opening a Cash App account where account-free participation is available.
What the feature does not mean
- Apple Pay or Google Pay can be used for every ordinary Cash App peer-to-peer payment.
- A Cash App $Cashtag can universally receive wallet-funded transfers.
- Apple Pay or Google Pay provides escrow, buyer protection or automatic refunds for the Pool.
The wallet is simply a payment method in this specific Pool-link flow. Cash App remains the service that records the Pool and delivers the money to the organizer.
How to create and close a Pool
Cash App’s public materials describe the workflow, although button labels can vary by app version or account rollout.

- Open Cash App and go to the payment area.
- Choose the option to start a Pool.
- Enter a Pool name and target amount.
- Invite Cash App contacts or share the Pool link by text or another messaging service.
- Monitor contributors, amounts and progress toward the target.
- Close the Pool when collection is complete or when you decide to stop accepting payments.
- Transfer the collected amount to your Cash App balance and use or send that balance for the group purpose.
There is no stated deadline or automatic expiration requirement. You can close a Pool even when it has not reached its target. Reaching the target does not itself transfer the money; the organizer still has to close it.
How a person without Cash App contributes
Send the contributor the genuine Pool link rather than asking for an unrelated $Cashtag payment. After opening the link, the person follows the displayed checkout steps and selects Apple Pay or Google Pay if eligible. Cash App’s no-account terms make an important geographic exception: New York residents must create or maintain a Cash App account to contribute.

Account-free access can also be unavailable because of payment-method, location, risk or link restrictions. A contributor should confirm the organizer’s identity, Pool name and purpose before submitting money.
Fees: the funding source matters
| Contribution method | Cash App’s stated Pool treatment |
|---|---|
| Cash App balance | No Pool contribution fee |
| Credit card, including a credit card used through Apple Pay or Google Pay | 3% credit-card fee |
| Starting a Pool | No fee |
For example, a $100 contribution funded by a credit card through Apple Pay or Google Pay can incur a $3 fee. Apple Pay and Google Pay themselves are wallet interfaces; their presence does not make a credit-card-funded contribution free. Check the checkout disclosure for the applicable funding source.

Who controls the money, and are refunds automatic?
The organizer controls the Pool. Cash App’s contributor terms say contributions belong to the organizer when made, and Cash App does not verify the stated purpose or guarantee how the funds will be used. Closing a Pool transfers the collected amount to the organizer; it is not the same as refunding contributors.
Refund decisions and disbursement are the organizer’s responsibility. If you paid the wrong Pool, changed your mind or the event was canceled, contact the organizer first and do not assume Cash App will automatically reverse the payment. This arrangement is materially different from formal escrow or a service that promises buyer protection.

Contributors can see what other people in the Pool contributed. That visibility can help a group track progress, but it means the feature is not suitable when payments need to be anonymous or financially private.

Uses Cash App’s cited terms restrict
- Charitable fundraising.
- Business purposes or sales of goods and services.
- Political campaigns or political-party purposes.
- Unlawful activity.
- Certain fundraising involving minors without required guardian permission.
- Using credit cards solely for cash advances or to earn rewards, points or miles.
These restrictions make Pools a personal group-expense tool, not a replacement for a compliant charity platform, business checkout service or political fundraising system. Review the applicable terms at cash.app/us/en/legal/pools-contributors-no-account.
If Apple Pay or Google Pay does not work
- The contributor may be ineligible for account-free participation, including the New York account requirement.
- The card or wallet setup may not be supported.
- Prepaid and gift cards are restricted under the no-account contributor terms.
- The link may be invalid, closed or restricted.
- Cash App’s risk systems may block, refuse or reverse the transaction.
Try an eligible payment method or a Cash App account where permitted; do not work around a blocked transaction with a different person’s card.
When Pools is a good fit
- A trusted organizer is collecting in advance for a trip, lodging, transportation, tickets, a meal, celebration or gift.
- The group includes both Cash App users and people who prefer a wallet link.
- You want a visible target and contribution list rather than one person fronting the entire cost.
- The organizer accepts responsibility for closing the Pool, using the money and handling any refunds.
When another tool may be better
| Need | More suitable direction |
|---|---|
| Calculate each person’s share after expenses | An expense-splitting ledger such as Splitwise |
| Bank-integrated person-to-person transfers | Zelle, if participating banks support it |
| A familiar peer-to-peer network already used by everyone | Venmo or PayPal, subject to their current rules and features |
| Charity, business sales or political fundraising | A service designed and authorized for that purpose |
| Anonymous payments, formal escrow or guaranteed refunds | A service whose terms explicitly provide those protections |
Pools is strongest for collecting toward one shared target before an expense. It is not necessarily the best way to divide a bill after somebody has already paid, and it does not automatically calculate equal shares.
Safety checklist before contributing
- Confirm the link came from the organizer you know.
- Match the Pool name and purpose to the event or purchase.
- Check the amount and any disclosed credit-card fee before authorizing payment.
- Assume your contribution amount will be visible to Pool participants.
- Understand that a missed target does not trigger an automatic refund.
- Keep messages and receipts if the group later needs to reconcile contributions.
Cash App’s current legal materials also recognize peer-to-peer Pools in its broader terms at cash.app/legal/us/en-us/legal/us/en-us/tos.
