Cars Sold in Canada or Mexico but Not the U.S.: Current Examples and Caveats

A roundup marked updated for 2026 reports lineup differences in Canada and Mexico, but it does not verify 21 cars sold in both countries and absent from the U.S.

Canada and Mexico can receive vehicles that U.S. buyers cannot buy new, but the available evidence does not verify a definitive list of 21 cars sold in both countries and absent from the United States. A 2026-updated roundup reports several current Canada–U.S. differences and a separate set of Mexico-market examples; treat these as reported examples, not a confirmed 21-car cross-border list.

What the “21 cars” claim gets right—and what it doesn’t establish

Vehicle lineups vary across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, even when the same automakers operate in all three markets. But the 21-vehicle premise is more specific than the available evidence: the current roundup does not establish its original set of 21, nor does it show that every listed vehicle is sold in both Canada and Mexico while being unavailable in the U.S.

The examples below are attributed to a roundup marked updated for 2026, rather than independently confirmed against current automaker catalogs. Availability can change by model year, powertrain, trim, and country, so read “not in the U.S.” as a reported market difference—not a guarantee that a particular configuration is unavailable everywhere in the country.

Canada: reported differences from the U.S. lineup

The roundup identifies these as Canada-market examples or Canada–U.S. lineup differences:

  • Display Piece: A must-have collectible for car enthusiasts and model collectors.
  • Kia EV5: reported as a Canada-exclusive North American offering.
  • Nissan ARIYA: reported to remain in Canada for 2026 after U.S. production ended following model year 2025.
  • Kia EV4: reported as available in Canada while its U.S. launch is delayed.
  • Hyundai KONA Electric: reported as offered in Canada for model year 2026 while the U.S. skips that model year.
  • Kia Niro PHEV: reported to continue in Canada as the U.S. drops the plug-in hybrid variant.
  • Chrysler Grand Caravan: the roundup says Canada’s model corresponds to the Chrysler Voyager in the U.S. This is a nameplate difference, not necessarily a wholly distinct vehicle.
  • Hyundai PALISADE Hybrid NHL Edition and BMW 540i xDrive Legacy Edition: reported as Canada-specific editions.
  • Nissan Micra and Acura CSX: cited as used-market examples, not current new-car offerings.

These examples span different kinds of difference. Some concern model-year timing or a particular powertrain; others are editions, a related U.S. nameplate, or vehicles encountered on the used market. They should not be counted as equivalent “exclusive cars” without clarifying which kind of availability is meant.

Mexico: reported market-specific examples

The same roundup lists the following Mexico-market vehicles: Nissan March and Magnite; Toyota Avanza; Volkswagen Nivus and Virtus; Chevrolet Aveo Hatchback, Captiva, and Groove; Renault Duster; SEAT Ibiza; and Dodge Attitude. The cited list includes small cars, crossovers, and people movers. It is a set of reported Mexico examples—not evidence that each is also sold in Canada or that all are absent from the U.S. lineup.

The roundup points to pricing bands, vehicle sourcing, certification costs, dealer networks, and product positioning as possible reasons for lineup differences. Those are its explanations, not universal causes established for every model. A vehicle may make commercial sense in one country and not another even when the manufacturer sells other vehicles across the region.

Why a vehicle can look exclusive when the difference is narrower

  • Model-year timing: A vehicle may continue in one country after another market stops receiving it, or launch dates may differ.
  • Powertrain or trim: A country may offer a hybrid or plug-in variant, or a particular edition, while another country does not.
  • Nameplate: Related vehicles may carry different names across markets, as the roundup reports for Canada’s Grand Caravan and the U.S. Voyager.
  • New versus used availability: A used-market sighting does not mean the vehicle is currently sold new in that country.

These distinctions matter when comparing prices, researching a used vehicle, or deciding whether an apparent “exclusive” is genuinely a different model. Model year and sales country are the most useful starting points; then check whether the difference is the whole vehicle, its powertrain, trim, or name.

Historical examples are not proof of current availability

A 2018 Cars.com article listed examples including Chevrolet Tornado, Kia Rondo, Nissan Micra, Peugeot RCZ, and Volkswagen CrossFox. Those examples document past lineup variation, but that article’s 2018 availability claims do not establish which vehicles are on sale in 2026.

Can you import one into Canada?

A car being sold in a neighboring market does not automatically mean it can be imported and registered in Canada. Transport Canada advises importers to check vehicle eligibility, recall status, inspection requirements, and applicable customs steps. Its compatibility list relies on voluntary manufacturer information, may change without notice, and does not guarantee that a vehicle can be modified successfully to meet Canadian requirements. The agency’s guidance also describes duties or taxes, recall clearance, a Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) inspection, declaration at the border, and a 45-day inspection deadline for most vehicles. These are Canadian import requirements, not guidance on importing into the U.S. Check Transport Canada’s current vehicle-import guidance before making plans.

Check market compatibility before buying parts

A vehicle that appears equivalent across markets may have market-specific wiring or development differences. Honda Canada warns that parts and accessories are developed for the markets where vehicles are sold, and that wiring differences can make an accessory incompatible. For a specific part, verify the exact model year, trim, and market specification with the manufacturer or a qualified parts supplier rather than relying on a similar U.S. model name. Honda Canada’s accessories information explains the market-specific caution.

How to read a cross-border availability list

  1. Start with the country and model year. A listing should say where and when the vehicle is sold.
  2. Identify the kind of difference. Confirm whether the claim concerns a full model, a powertrain, a trim, or just a different nameplate.
  3. Separate new from used. A vehicle in used listings is not necessarily part of the current new-car lineup.
  4. Confirm with current market sources. Because availability changes, check the automaker’s current national catalog before treating a roundup as definitive.
  5. For an import, verify eligibility before purchase. Use the applicable government process for the destination country; a sale in Canada or Mexico alone does not establish import or registration eligibility elsewhere.
