For Carnival cruises departing from the U.S., guests aged 21 or older may carry on one sealed, unopened 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne on embarkation day. The exception does not cover port, vermouth, sherry, or other fortified wines above 15% alcohol by volume (ABV). The permitted bottle must go in carry-on luggage, not checked luggage.
Which wines are excluded from Carnival’s carry-on allowance?
Carnival’s Liquor and Beverage Policy says port, vermouth, sherry, and other fortified wines over 15% ABV cannot be brought on board under the wine-and-champagne exception. The rule concerns both the fortified-wine category and the stated alcohol threshold; a bottle that falls into an excluded category does not qualify for the exception.
This is not a ban on every wine. Carnival permits one qualifying bottle per guest aged 21 or older, subject to the policy’s packaging and embarkation-day conditions. Alcohol outside the stated exception is prohibited and may be confiscated and discarded without compensation, according to Carnival.
How much wine can you bring, and how should you pack it?
- Quantity: One 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne per guest aged 21 or older.
- Condition: The bottle must be sealed and unopened.
- Timing: Carry it on embarkation day.
- Luggage: Put the bottle in hand luggage. The exception is not permission to pack it in checked luggage.
These conditions come from Carnival’s policy for cruises departing from the U.S. If your sailing departs from Australia or another country, check the policy for that itinerary rather than assuming the U.S. rule applies; Carnival directs Australian departures to separate information, and the cited policy does not establish the rules for every other jurisdiction.

What does Carnival charge if you want wine served in a restaurant or bar?
Carnival’s Corkage Fee guidance sets a $15 USD charge per 750 ml bottle when outside wine or champagne is served in the main dining room, a specialty restaurant, or a bar. Carnival says wine or champagne covered by this guidance must be consumed in the stateroom unless it is served in one of those venues subject to the fee.
Carnival says guests may bring a corkscrew for use in their stateroom. It is optional, not a way to qualify an excluded wine or avoid the restaurant and bar corkage charge.
