Cargill reported $165 billion in revenue for its fiscal year ended May 31, 2022, up 23% from the previous year. The figure is company-wide revenue—not profit—and covers the 12 months from June 1, 2021, through May 31, 2022.
What Cargill reported
Cargill’s 2022 annual report gives revenue of $165 billion, a 23% increase from the prior fiscal year. The amounts in the report are in U.S. dollars. Cargill summarized the result in its stakeholder letter: “Thanks to our teams’ diligence and agility in serving customers, we recorded $165 billion in revenues this fiscal year, a 23% increase from a year ago.” (Cargill 2022 Annual Report)
Which period does fiscal 2022 cover?
Cargill’s fiscal year ran from June 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022. It is not the same as calendar year 2022, so the revenue figure should not be read as revenue earned from January through December 2022. (Cargill 2022 Annual Report)
Revenue is not profit
Revenue measures a company’s sales and other reported income before expenses; it does not show how much the company kept as profit. Cargill is privately held, and contemporary Star Tribune coverage reported that the annual report did not disclose full-year profit. The $165 billion figure therefore does not establish Cargill’s net income, profitability, or profit margin. (Star Tribune, August 2022)

What the 23% increase does—and does not—explain
The 23% is a company-wide year-over-year comparison. Cargill’s cited revenue statement does not allocate the increase across its business areas, so it cannot show which unit drove growth or how much each contributed. The annual report describes operations spanning Agricultural Supply Chain, Food Ingredients & Bioindustrial, Animal Nutrition, Protein & Salt, and Financial Services & Metals, but does not provide a segment-by-segment breakdown alongside the $165 billion total. (Cargill 2022 Annual Report)
Cargill said the year was shaped by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, severe weather, trade disruptions, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Those are the company’s descriptions of the operating environment, not quantified explanations of how much any one factor contributed to the revenue increase. The report also described investments—including a North American 1,4-butanediol facility partnership with HELM, cocoa-processing upgrades in West Africa, and a pectin plant in Brazil—but does not identify them as measured causes of the year’s growth. Was $165 billion a record?
In August 2022, the Star Tribune described $165 billion as Cargill’s highest annual revenue to that point. That supports calling it a record as reported at the time; it does not establish whether it remains the company’s highest revenue in later fiscal years. (Star Tribune, August 2022)
