Careem suspended its ride-hailing service in Pakistan on July 18, 2025. The decision ended Careem Rides in the country, not Careem Technologies’ broader work from Pakistan: the company said it would keep building its Everything App there for regional markets.

When did Careem stop rides in Pakistan?

Careem announced on June 18, 2025, that its ride-hailing service in Pakistan would stop on July 18, 2025. That date has passed. Careem had entered Pakistan in October 2015. Its suspension was distinct from Uber’s earlier decision to end its own ride-hailing app in Pakistan in April 2024; at that time, Uber said Careem would continue offering rides across the country. Dawn reported Careem’s announcement and history.

Why did Careem suspend the service?

Careem co-founder and CEO Mudassir Sheikha attributed the decision to Pakistan’s economic conditions, intensifying competition, and the company’s global investment priorities. As Dawn reported his explanation: “The challenging macroeconomic reality, intensifying competition, and global capital allocation made it hard to justify the investment levels required to deliver a safe and dependable service in the country.” These are Careem’s stated reasons, not an independent assessment of the causes.

Business Recorder also reported the suspension and Careem’s explanation.

Did Careem leave Pakistan altogether?

No. The announcement concerned Careem Rides. Sheikha said Careem Technologies, a spinout building the Everything App, would continue working from Pakistan for the region. Dawn reported his estimate that nearly 400 employees across functions were building the app and verticals including food and grocery delivery and payments. That statement does not establish that every planned vertical was available to users in Pakistan.

Dawn’s account of the announcement describes the company’s stated continuing work.

Can customers still reclaim a Careem Wallet balance?

At the time of the shutdown announcement, Careem said it would contact users with instructions for reclaiming remaining Careem Wallet balances. Dawn reported that Careem Care would remain available for pending user issues through September 18, 2025. Both dates have passed, and the available reporting does not verify a current process for unresolved balance claims. Customers with a remaining balance should use Careem’s official support channels, if accessible, and keep records of their account and prior communications; do not assume the past support window is still open.

What apps replaced Careem?

There is no single replacement established for every city or rider. A June 2025 HUM News report named inDrive, Yango, and Bykea among Careem’s competitors. It described inDrive’s fare-negotiation model, in which riders and drivers negotiate a price, as appealing to price-sensitive users. That report is a snapshot from 2025, not a current comparison of coverage, fares, payment options, support, or safety.

Before choosing an app, check whether it currently operates in your city and review its fare-setting method, payment choices, support access, and safety features in the app. HUM News’ June 2025 report provides the cited competitor names and fare-model description, but not a current ranking.

What the Uber–Careem deal does—and does not—tell customers

In June 2024, Pakistan’s Competition Commission said it had granted a time-bound exemption, through December 2025, for specified non-compete clauses in the Uber–Careem agreement. The Commission described agreement coverage involving food, groceries, physical goods, micro-mobility, and digital-wallet or other financial services, while saying ride-sharing exclusivity would be retained under the agreement. The exemption period has ended; the announcement does not show that those other services launched in Pakistan or establish current market arrangements.

The Competition Commission of Pakistan’s June 13, 2024 release sets out the exemption and its time limit.
