Re:

Cardiff City Are Back in the Championship—But a Premier League Return Is Still a Long Way Off

Cardiff’s April 2026 promotion restored its Championship place after one League One season. It did not bring a Premier League return or establish that Vincent Tan is selling.

Cardiff City have returned to the Championship, but they have not returned to the Premier League. They won promotion from League One on 18 April 2026 after spending one season in the third tier. Vincent Tan’s stated ambitions have shifted with the club’s circumstances: in January 2025, chairman Mehmet Dalman said Tan wanted Cardiff back in the Premier League; after relegation that April, Tan said his immediate commitment was to restoring the club’s place in the Championship. The argument that Tan must sell is a view about who should lead the club—not evidence that a sale is under way.

What Cardiff’s promotion does—and does not—mean

Cardiff secured promotion from League One to the Championship with a 3–1 win at Reading on 18 April 2026, according to the EFL’s match report. It was an immediate return to the second tier after one League One season. Cardiff have not, as a result, returned to the Premier League, and the promotion does not establish a timetable for doing so.

The distinction matters because the Premier League ambition was stated before the club’s 2025 relegation. Following that drop, Tan’s public message focused on getting back to the Championship and rebuilding. Those are different targets at different points in the club’s recent history.

What Tan and Cardiff’s chairman have said

January 2025: a Premier League ambition

On 8 January 2025, while Cardiff were fighting to avoid relegation from the Championship, chairman Mehmet Dalman wrote that Tan remained committed to the club and was determined to get it back to the Premier League. Dalman also described a longer-term goal of financial independence, while saying Tan was still funding the club monthly. “Putting it plainly: Vincent Tan must bridge that gap,” Dalman wrote. These were the chairman’s statements about the owner’s intentions and the club’s funding position at that time, not an independent forecast of promotion or proof that the ownership model was working. Read Dalman’s statement.

April 2025: the immediate goal became the Championship

On 29 April 2025, Cardiff confirmed it would leave the Championship for the 2025/26 season and said it would review club structures and practices as it appointed a permanent manager and management team. In his personal message that day, Tan said he was committed to getting Cardiff back to the Championship and supporting a rebuild. In context, “it” referred to Cardiff’s place in the Championship, not the Premier League. His message did not set a Premier League return date. Read Tan’s message; Read the club’s relegation statement.

Does “Vincent Tan must sell up” reflect a sale process?

No current sale process, offer, named prospective buyer or sale date is established by the available reporting. “Must sell up” is an opinion or demand, not a verified description of a transaction in progress. The club’s January and April 2025 messages presented Tan as committed to funding and rebuilding Cardiff; those statements describe what the chairman and owner said, but they do not independently demonstrate that the approach is effective or that the club is likely to reach the Premier League.

There is historical context, but it should not be mistaken for current evidence. In a BBC Sport report published on 1 March 2017, Tan said he had no plans to sell his clubs but would consider the right offer. The report also said he had turned down offers for Cardiff because the prices were not right. That quote records his position in 2017; it does not tell readers whether he would sell now. Read the BBC report.

Nor do the sources establish representative supporter polling on whether Tan should sell. Individual supporter comments may express frustration, but they cannot show how widely a view is held.

What Cardiff’s reported finances show

Cardiff City FC’s 3 March 2025 financial update summarized accounts for Cardiff City Football Club (Holdings) Limited for the year ended 31 May 2024. The figures are useful historical context, not a picture of the club’s current-season finances. Read the club’s update.

Reported item Figure and period What the club said
Operating loss £9.957 million for the year ended 31 May 2024 Reported in Cardiff’s 2025 summary of the group accounts.
Loss before tax £11.661 million for the year ended 31 May 2024 Reported in Cardiff’s 2025 summary of the group accounts.
Exceptional gains £18.4 million for the year ended 31 May 2024 The club said the main driver was a £12 million receivable linked to a share of proceeds from a litigation claim.
Net additional funding from the majority shareholder and connected parties £11.832 million for the year ended 31 May 2024 The club said Tan’s loans accrued interest at 7%, which he waived.

These figures show why owner funding is part of the debate: Cardiff reported substantial losses and additional funding from Tan and connected parties for that financial year. They do not, by themselves, establish the club’s current cash position, what future funding will be available, or whether a different owner could or would provide better terms. The club distinguishes shareholder and connected-party loans from institutional borrowing, so these figures should not be described as bank debt.

What would make a sale proposal assessable?

No evidence-based comparison of takeover alternatives is possible without an identified buyer and verifiable terms. If a proposal emerges, the useful questions would include:

  • Funding: What capital is committed, on what timetable, and on what terms?
  • Governance: Who would control the club, and what safeguards or accountability arrangements would apply?
  • Supporter engagement: Is consultation or another formal role for supporters part of the proposal?
  • Conditions: Is the offer conditional on approvals, financing, or other requirements?

Until those details exist, the claim that Tan should sell remains a judgment about the club’s direction and leadership. Cardiff’s return to the Championship is a concrete achievement; a Premier League return and any change of ownership remain separate, unresolved questions.
